Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

So audiovideonation.com gave me a call today about the TV I ordered, and they were very insistent that I upgrade to freight shipping (instead of the free shipping I chose) and that I buy an extended warranty (which, contrary to their implied statement that it's a Sony warranty, is likely a 3rd party warranty judging from other customer reviews). And from other reviews that I'm seeing, people who decline these offers sometimes just have their orders hang in limbo forever.

Welp, that's the kind of low-ball nonsense that'll get me to cancel and order elsewhere instead.

Yeah that sounds like a load of horse shit. I would say just go amazon and feel good about their return policy for anything, but looks like that particular set is a few hundred more on amazon for some reason.

You should order from reputable dealers

The "some reason" is they don't rely on aggressive upselling to keep the shown price low and then drive the price up to what Amazon is selling for after you commit.

Don't buy anything from people like that, it's not worth it. There are plenty of reputable Internet dealers who don't pull shit like that and still undercut Amazon.

Holy shitballs. Just picked up the LG OLED EA9800 55 inch for an amazing price (2k brand new) and forget everything else, OLED is it. It truly does have the best pic as many websites claim. The pic is absolutely insane with true 100% blacks. I've owned a number of great tvs (Sammy LED, Panny Plasma) and this tv blows everything else away. This is the original OLED from LG and apparently it's even better than the 9300 LG as the motion is handled better. I can attest as I'mw athcing football and have NO motion issues.

Gaming, it needs to be on game mode and it plays perfectly fine. Overall one hell of a package. No 4k, but at this size not necessary. I would love to see OLED on 65 inch but that won't be affordable for some time.

Well I mean they are selling the TV that I just got from amazon for only like $40 less then I got it, while the one hes going for is like a $400 difference.

I do agree with what you said though. Like I can't even imagine getting called back by a place I put an order in trying to sell me more shit. That sounds like the kind of thing that happens on "you are going to get ripped off and your credit card numbers stolen" parts of the internet.

Here in Belgium, LG's first 55" 1080p OLED went on sale exactly 1 year ago with an RRP of €8,000.

Today, you can buy it for "only" €2,500, while a 65" 4K model is now available for €8,000.

People can talk all the smack they want about 4K, but it's the real deal. Been watching a lot of 4K footage on my Samsung 8550, and wow . . . going back to blu-ray looks like DVD! The Blacklist, Breaking Bad, and movies like G.I. Joe Retribution on the UHD pack are just mind-blowing. The detail is so vivid, it's like looking through a window, especially The Blacklist which is filmed digitally. And Directv just announced they are starting a UHD service soon. It's coming, folks. It really is.

If I had a choice between OLED or 4K, that would be a really tough call. . . .

Hey Blackvette, if you're around I have a few more questions about that LG OLED:

Does it buzz at all? (like a plasma does on a white screen)

Does it get hot?

Does the 4K tvs suffer from inherent "soap opera" effect because of the super high resoluition?

Ie do shows now look like cam footage?

I'm going to one up you and get me a 70" Vizio P-Series.:)

bastard :P i don't feel the need for 4k yet. i'm mostly just console gaming and streaming media. still jealous.

Almost forgot some pics:
Here's the old 47" (got $400 for it on kijiji)

Only if you don't turn Auto Motion Plus off! First thing I did when I got it.

The TV has a Clear Motion Rate of 1200, which means that it handles motion for things like sports so much better than my old A650.

The best thing about it (other than 3D!) is how it upscales to 4K. As soon as I turned on Dark Souls II, I noticed the difference. Heide's Tower of Flame looked much closer to shots of the PC version I'd seen.

And then there's watching The Blacklist in UHD. . . .

Since, we're sharing pics of our babies:

Hey Easymode,

The tv does not buzz at all or make any noise, has no fan in it either, my kuro elite buzzes and buzzes more with a full white screen.

As for getting hot, when I first got the tv just for haha's I ran the color slides non stop for 180 hrs, did not turn the tv off in those 180 hrs, just to break it in evenly and make sure it wouldnt crap out etc. Never made any noise and was cold to the touch :o

My kuro could heat a small apartment in the winter :/

I loved the read! Now I know what type of HDTV tech I'll be picking up when my Kuro Elite decides to finally go to the big landfill in the sky.

Thanks! It will be a big step up in quality when you do get an oled, games use zero black alot and this tv can do that, its a lucid experience... I still get up early before work to play games on it, havent done that since the Snes days, that should say something!!

Darn-it, my Sony ST7 broke after a week. Front left has a terrible buzz to it, going to return it and I'm not sure if I'll pick up another.

I might just go with the Marantz slimline receiver, bookshelf speakers, center channel, and a sub. It would be a bit more wires, but still pretty slim setup and would cost less than the ST7. Stupid receivers, just can't get away from you.

I checked out the LG 9300 at a local BB yesterday. I'm not sure what to say except that it made all the uber high profiled 4k TVs around it look like silly little toys. I'm not one for putting too much (or any) weight on what a TV looks like in a showroom but GOD DAMN...this was clearly in a different class than anything else in the store (even though it was 'only' 1080p).

My TV is sort of new still so I'll be waiting for this tech to get to 65", 4k and sub $3500. But the next step is definitely here already. I can't see going LED (or plasma) after seeing that.

Thanks again. It's very nice to know that heat and noise are non-factors.

Damn, I think I'm sold. It sounds like one of those top tier TVs that I would regret missing out on. If I'm not happy with it (which sounds unlikely), it shouldn't be hard to return it to Best Buy within 30 days.

You might have some trouble buying it. It's unavailable, had to turn some favors in to get one actually shipped to my customer. Tried to get two more this week and LG says there's a wait now.

Yesterday I went out and bought BenQ W1070 after reading so many positive impressions about it. I'm new to projectors so I didn't know what to expect.

Holy. Shit. This thing can project a HUGE screen! I've never seen anything like it before, so its size pretty much blew my mind.

I'm probably never going back. This thing costed me half of what my 60" plasma did, and it can go three times bigger. Sure, the contrast isn't as nice, and I'd have to watch/play with no lights on, but the size is so worth it.

So I've been thinking about finally upgrading my old 22in Samsung TV into something more adequate for PC and PS4 use. I've looked into the Sony KDL-32W705 and the Asus MX279H but I'm still undecided.

Anyone did a similar upgrade? Any recommendations?

Anyone knows what these test patterns are supposed to look like on my F8500 ?
The first one especially:

Samsung-46ES7000_expert-patterns.jpg

With recommended brightness settings i have a *really* hard time spotting the first few grey squares in the upper left corner, but making them visible involves cranking brightness way too high for my taste.

The black squares pattern test posted a few pages back looks just fine, with each square clearly visible, so i don't think there's anything wrong with what i'm using...

I'm guessing the squares on the left maybe represent noise level and you are supposed to make them disappear by lowering brightness ? dunno.

You were right, my attempts to reserve that LG at Best Buy didn't pan out. But thankfully my local Future Shop was able to reserve one for the same price, and they just called me to confirm. Will be picking it up tonight :)

What size TV do you have? Apparently it has to be more than 65 inches to be noticeable. As for 4k and OLED, the majority say OLED b/c you get so much of a pic improvement for material available. Eventually it will be a OLED4k combo which would be the no brainer but even longer for that to be afforable. I know someone mentioned in Europe the price cuts have been drastic for OLED and now 4k but the current price is still relatively high. I'm talking about the time when a 65 OLED 4k TV is 2k. I don't see that happening for 4-5 yrs.

The LG 9800 (55 inch OLED) for USD 2000 is an ABSOLUTE steal at microcenter. I would go back and buy another if my wife wouldn't kill me.

I have the 9800 LG and no to either. I have a Panny plasma downstairs which does both : ( so I know what you're asking about.

To me personally, having a curved screen is a deal breaking.
Even for an OLED for that price.

OLED is fantastic. I like 4k too, but between the two, I'd probably choose OLED. I seen the lg9300 at best buy. Fantastic tv. I'll wait until they dropped the curved thing though.

My friend got the lg oled 9800 for 2 k from Mirco center. He said ps4 games are awesome.oled is the new king
The curve is not bad u don't even notice it

Welcome aboard !
Try to put the sharpness to max for even better results.
Also there is a setting to be put at 0 to avoid some blurry image. I'll check it Later.

Edit : settings / advanced / clarity control / noise reduction. Putting it at 0 gives a nice boost to overall sharpness.

Not 100% certain as I never used that built in pattern but usually when you see those it is video black and below video black. Without something to tell you what range the patterns are it is hard to say. Ex. It may very well be that you aren't meant to see all squares. Like one may be what is 17 on a normal brightness pattern and the rest are 16 and lower which you shouldn't see. Generally though if that is the case you shouldn't see 16 and below. And for the white they shouldn't blend together. you should see a defined step even if subtle between them at that far right. Also you shouldn't see any color shifts (pick, red, green, blue) hue's in the whites. If so your contrast is up too high.

For teh 2nd pattern you that with blue, green, and red only mode. This is so that you can adjust the colors. When those modes are turned on the blue square should blend perfectly with blue only mode, so on and so froth with red and green as well.

Thanks for the tips. :)

Although I think max sharpness is a bit too sharp for me.

Sad panda. Think I have permanent burn-in on my Panny S60. Had a few dental surgeries early this week and played Destiny a good 12-13 hours a day.

Was careless after break-in and forgot in BF4 I had turned the UI dim. Stupid me. Running the WoW pixel flipper now. Hoping to minimize the assault rifle in the corner of my screen.

Might end up retiring the TV as my blu-ray tv so this doesn't happen again. Going to miss those blacks in gaming though.

That was helpful, thanks.
Yeah, i believe I am not supposed to see those darker squares, must be 16 and below. Guess ill have to use better test patterns. Not that I'm not happy with the way the tv looks, it's absolutely stunning.

It's *probably* temporary and will likely go away. Early on with my ST60 I played Dead Island: Riptide for countless hours straight till I beat it. Took around 3 weeks for that stupid health bar to go away. I don't get IR anywhere near that bad anymore for the most part, but Destiny's IR was still pretty resilient for me too. It goes away though. I suggest just being patient and if something has those super bright UI parts again I'd just try to take breaks more often.

They must have actually calibrated it and hooked up a BluRay because the two I've checked out at local BestBuy's were among the worst looking anywhere near the price.

What's your budget?I recently bought a 42" Panasonic AS650 for my PS4 (and my future WiiU) and i'm very satisfied with it.I think it has a great value for money.

Turn off pixel orbiter while running pixel flipper off the WoW disc.
