PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS Early Access Thread: This Is Battle Royale

Was playing a squad game yesterday (which I've been enjoying more than solo, even though I just do matchmaking), and while there were two of us left, we came across an area in the trees south of the military base with 8-10 people just standing there, AFK. It was eerie seeing them like that, and crazy to me that THAT many people would AFK in a match. My squad mate actually stopped and asked me, "Uh, do you see all these people here?"

Unfortunately, we were dumb and shot them, whereas beating them to death or using them as bait would have probably been the better thing to do, so as to not be heard. We died soon after because of our decision, but got in the top 15, and I got 6 free kills out of it, so worth.

Even my most gamepad heavy friends gave up trying and opted for KBM instead. I think you can do it, I just don't know that it's viable.
Ah that's what I thought. I'll get used to it, but I really do loathe getting started with a new game on KBM. Thanks.

It's not that they're charging money (completely), it's that the devs said multiple times in the beginning "We don't do anything paid to the game before it comes out of early access." and then they did anyway.

It's more specific to this dev that people are pissed about it, versus just the early access/paid features idea.

What's even more ridiculous is their reasoning for the paid crates! Somehow they need to raise money to fund the competition expo. You've sold 5 million copies and have 30 people working on the game.... What have you done with all that revenue?!!

How does another player get an AR before I even open a door? Are there loadouts? :s

No loadouts, they were just quicker. A good start is a combination between a good skydive to hit the ground first, and just being lucky that the first thing you find is a good weapon.

You might want to start at lesser congested areas when you first start playing to get a feel for skydiving and the rest of the game. It's going to be rough if you just concentrate on the heavy traffic areas when you're new.

Wowww, okay. It was like a farm or something with an outbuilding. It was near a congested area, though, so I guess that would make it popular? I must have been on the ground for 10 seconds before I got shot. Probably a rarity.

Quicker to land and to loot. Also possibly target higher likelihood spots like few story buildings or tight grouping of few smaller ones.

Pick some remote-ish (don't go to quarry to West or wood cutting area to East) area with decent concentration of buildings (marked on map) for lower traffic and to get practice on looting runs.

On whole parachute thing. If you keep your vision at horizon level and hold down W you glide distance, good for nice range jumps. When rushing down get close to or right above target area and then look straight down while holding down W. Higher your velocity is as you hit chute pull height closer to the ground you will "crash" before chute janks your speed away.

Edit: 10s can be looong time depending on how other players land around you and get loot RNG

Might have just been unlucky, even in more remote areas it's always a chance. Make sure to spin the camera around and look where other people are landing when you're sky diving. Aim for some buildings where no one else is landing so you can secure a weapon without interference. If you get something good right away you can hunt them down.

I noticed two others land the same time as me at the farm (not a farm but whatever; a rural building) so I aimed for the outhouse. It had two flights of exposed stairs and I got shot whilst attempting to open the door xD

I don't know, putting that money back into the development of this unfinished game?

Makes sense to get money that will go directly to funding an expo so they don't have to use the money that is supposed to go towards the development of the game (no matter how much that might be).

Just my 2 cents though.

Does this game support controller usage? If so, is it any good? It's the only thing keeping me from getting this on the PC and waiting for the Xbox version.

I can hold my own in games like Overwatch with a controller on the PC, if that means anything.

I've been playing with my friend, and something I noticed was that she was always saying bullets were coming from the opposite areas that I heard them. I just assumed she didnt know where they were coming from. Then one day, there was a bullet close to me, and I knew it was West, yet she said East. So we decided to test her audio in game, and sure enough her audio is reversed! Left is right, Right is left, Front is Back etc. I had her boot up a L/R test for Stereo, and her headphones are not reversed outside of the game. Only when she's in game, is it reversed. What gets even stranger, she switched her cables on her headphoens (swapped the Left and Right) - and the audio was still reversed in game.

She is using Sennheiser HD-800s + a DAC/AMP connected to her PC. So we have no idea what is causing this (it's not a logitech device)

Can't believe how shitty this game runs on my pc which can run everything else pretty well. Is it just not optimized being an EA? Might just wait for a ps4 version. Shitty.

No idea how to help, but I've definitely spent a whole bunch of solo games utterly confused because I had my headphones on backwards.

It does support pad, but afaik there is no aim assist for padders currently. I don't know how well it's mapped for pad so can't comment on that.

You being able to hold on your own in OW doesn't mean a lot here, imo. BG requires so much faster reactions to threats and far more accurate and faster shots. You can get cut down so fast that it isn't even funny so padding could be very rough experience.

Shitty how?

I assume you have tried dropping settings down?

Seriously??? a HD800? why?

Edit: as a sound enginer, I can conform the sound in this game is shit. don't even bother with people telling you otherwise. panning is off. left right is bugged.

I have played over 100hrs, all with gamepad (Started with Xbone controller, now I am using Dualshock4). You can use Steam to map the controls to whatever you feel it needs to be. Biggest thing is adjusting the left trigger so it is easier to "tap" for ADS (Since hold is 3rd person). I had to adjust my deadzone and trigger zones a bit until I got it in a good place. Also your mouse/cursor/aiming sensitivity is important as well. Be sure the turn is WAY down on steam gamepad settings, then make granular adjustments in game (There are lots of settings for each scope which is awesome)

I have lots of top 10's a couple 3rds, 2 2nds, and 1 Chicken Dinner in solo with gamepad. It is possible but just know you are definitely at a disadvantage in certain cases. But be sure you are tweaking your sensitivity settings over the first couple games to get the "feel" right so you can win those shoot outs more often. (Honestly, most of the time you are shooting at people that don't know you are there.)

They are a tiny studio running/renting servers for 300 000 to 500 000 users at a time

Their server costs must be insane

For you.

Are you new to any kind of esports or tournaments at all? Games from bigger companies with far more budget than them have use similar stuff.

Hm

This only happens when I die. When I die, the audio gets reversed and Ill see a person run to my corpse from the right but the aound will come out from the left. Other than that, the sound is fine.

It happened to me in Wolfenstein: Nee Order too, except there when I died, sometimes the audio would get reversed for the next playthrough until it decided to reverse itself again on a subsequent checkpoint load/restart. Freaking annoying.

Or this game employing a lot more sounds than typical shooters throws people off. Whereas usually you only have to worry about a single gun shot sound of varying volume and an impact sound, depending on distance and origin and your location, you'll hear the bullet's crack.

Are you saying Bluehole are in a more comfortable place than companies like Valve, Blizzard, and Capcom right now?

I really just don't understand the sound when people are shooting at me. How am I supposed to tell from where? The crack and whizz is mostly together so there's not really 2 sounds so I know that means they're close, but what about the direction? It's fucking annoying.

Shot sound is very accurate for me. Only issues I have are the bugs with footsteps being abnormally loud for 2nd floor buildings sometimes, footsteps becoming 100% silent (even teammates right next to you), rain going silent, and two many sounds causing sound stutter and distortion which bugs the audio out completely (every lobby does this if I stick by the tables).

Some people don't get these though. I think it depends on the device and drivers. I'm also using a USB DAC so maybe it's linked to that.

I can understand people being *slightly* concerned that PUB will have, briefly, paid cosmetic crates before it's out of Early Access.

But not outraged. Reading the reddit (and a few of the comments here) over the weekend, you'd think that Greene himself was personally lifting fifty's out of people's wallets.

You won't hear both crack and whizz from the same bullet. You'll hear one or the other mattering how close the bullet passed by you. After you hear the crack/whizz you should hear the actual gunshot in the distance (unless it's silenced). To find the shooter look perpendicular to the crack/wizz and listen for the gunshot.

The op explains it all.

i think you get used to it over time. basically you just need to get used to looking at the direction perpindicular to where you hear the crack in your ear. like if i am running north and hear a crack directly in my right ear, i am confident the shot is either coming from north or south. you then need to determine which direction it is by either seeing where the bullet impact is or reading the terrain and gamestate properly

honestly it feels like total luck sometimes and maybe it is. but ever since i started paying attention and trying to think really fast i have noticed my spotting powers improve a bit so i dont feel totally cheated most of the time

and like they said you can listen for the gunshot but i am usually panicking at the time and talking to people so i dont notice that too often!

I'm saying they've made an insane amount of money whilst employing a tiny amount of people. They have a serious amount of cash, more than enough to host a expo to promote their own game.

Son of a biiiiiiitch. I was chillin in the lav with a shotgun and I knew someone entered the building at some point so I just waited there.

Then the circle got updated so I snuck onto the map to check the new location, and I got shot while looking at the map.

1) I guess the other player knew that the circle updating would be the best time to have a look around the house? I had actually already thought of this but...
2) I keep forgetting that the map key isn't a toggle. You have to press ESC to exit the map. ¬______¬

If you didn't make sound he most likely was looking around for overlooked loot or if you made sound by moving around then he cleared room by room. A lot of players are extremely sloppy looters and leave ammo and meds behind. Even suppressors.

You should be able to exit map with esc? I could swear you can, is my brain lying to me?

So it's either pay for an expo with the profits from the game (that is still in development and will be for quite some time) or use that money to give each dev a gigantic salary limiting their options on what they could do in the future.

They want to do this side thing and they seemingly don't want to use the profits that are currently going right back into developing the game, so they set up a separate thing that will fund this separate event

People who suddenly get a lot of money can often do a lot of dumb shit that makes that money disappear real fast. Starting to spend a bunch of it on an expo before the game is close to finished when there's so much better things that money could go to is one of those things.

I just don't really see the problem in letting the community help to fund an event by buying keys for crates which are completely optional and doesn't actually add anything to the gameplay in the game. Just like people buying compendiums for Dota to raise the price pool for the Internationals, even though Valve is a company that has an enormous sum of money. Only with PUGB, that money is currently going straight back into the development of the game, which it should.

You definitely do if you change your map key to tab. I've got it set to tab and as Woffls said, pressing tab while viewing the map doesn't exit the map screen, it just reopens it.
Okay cool, it just looks like there's an issue mapping it to TAB for some reason. It brings up inventory when not mapped to anything, so presumably there's some kind of conflict there.

I think I'll bind it to a mouse button instead.

Just got #3 :D I can't shoot for shiiiit.

well that sounds like a good reason not to map it to tab
Well, yes, now that said issue has been identified I shall no longer be binding map to TAB...

Do you think visible footprints work in this game?

Are there supposed to be visible footprints? I have a pretty old rig so maybe I'm missing out but I have thought that it would be awesome if traversing through tall grass, bushes, etc left behind traces (like footprints) that people could use to track for hunting squads. Tire marks on grass and sand would be cool too, but I imagine that's a crazy amount of work.

I've rarely had issues hearing where I'm shot from. If it's one sniper shot then maybe, but usually by the second shot I know the rough direction. Quickly spinning your camera around when the initial shots ring out helps a lot.

I imagine the game trying to track footprints and render them of each individual would melt everyone's PC.

This is how I would envision footprints working:

- Anything outside the circle, automatically 'erased'
- Footprints stay behind you for 100-200ft feet before the end of the 'trail' is erased
- Dead? No more footprints for you.

That way, at least the server would constantly be wiping the footprints to not leak TOO much memory, and obviously as people drop out you wouldn't need to keep proof of their existence. You also wouldn't have to worry about following footprints to nowhere (not that it wouldn't be fun).

Shit, just have "snowstorms" blow across the map every few minutes and wipe all the footprints anyway.
