PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS Early Access Thread: This Is Battle Royale

Finally got the chance to try FPP and hated it as much as I expected to.

I think it, ironically, encourages camping because running out of cover when you have a reduced sense of what's around you is less preferable. For instance, I was in roz, and I knew there were a few other players in other houses, and i felt less inclined to leave my house because it's so much harder to quickly see where people are in all directions. It was much harder to determine exactly where they were so I just didn't want to leave cover.

It just felt restricted, weird, clunky with doors and loot, and annoying. I think it's not for me.
You don't need to camp so much, because you don't need to be scared of people using the 3rd person camera to see you while you can't see them.
Now if he sees you, you can see him.

Yeah, that's why most people say they wanted it, but for me it made me want to move less and camp more.

When you run out in the open, you're examining everything. Looking for every little dot in the distance or peaking aorund a corner that may be a player.

In first person with drastically reduced visibility and no ability to pan around, spotting people is much much harder when traveling. When I play third person, my style isn't particularly campy (because I get bored) and I feel reasonably confident running around and staying on the move. Not the case in FPP.

Yes, it's true that invading a camper's position is safer in FPP (and by safer I mean it's almost an even playing field compared to third person where the camper has a greater advantage), but there's a lot more to the game than just that.

I can't imagine being more encouraged to camp than in a game that people can be hiding their entire body behind a wall while they are watching my every move, preaimed at my head, waiting for me to get too close to react. That encourages people to stay still, waiting for the other guy to expose himself first. Having the freedom to move while knowing that anyone that is watching me has to have exposed themselves first encourages movement. The ability to flank someone behind cover, knowing they can only see you if they are looking at you encourages movement.

Yeah for some reason you can't look behind you in first person. Hopefully they fix that soon because it's really annoying.

There's a trade off, though. You get one thing and lose something else. If I'm running across a relatively open area and someone shoots me from somewhere, in third person I can spot him much more quickly and defend myself. In first person my visibility is so reduced that a much larger advantage is given to the person who happens to see the other first. Ie, flanking is stronger. If you accidentally spot someone before they spot you your advantage is greater. More chance. More chaos.

That's one thing in a game like COD where you'll just respawn, but dying before I can defend myself is a bigger deal in PUBG.

I know there's a lot of factors at play, not the least of which is "get good", but at the end of the day I just don't feel safe running around in FPP because my spatial awareness is so reduced. You say you feel unsafe because someone may be third person peaking you, but I say I am quite aware of what dangerous terrain looks like where people might be and I'll be more suspicious of those areas. Just combining common sense with good headphones and how easy it is to track peoples position by sound goes a long way. There's no such thing as total safety, but I feel far safer in third person, whether I'm roaming or not.

The result of reduced awareness is I move less and camp more. And while it's true that I can't third person peak people while camping, I can still camp just fine by sitting still and tracking a moving person's position perfectly just via sound. A lot of streamers bitch about third person peaking all the time -- Let's see if they stop playing third person all together now that they have an alternative. I bet at least some of them find that it's not all it's cracked up to be.

I'd like to ask folks in here a question, obviously it's inspired by my experience in PUBG.

I can't start threads myself yet, but I'd be interested in hearing peoples opinions about gameplay loops in multiplayer shooter games, not just this one, and what makes them rewarding for you and keeps you coming back for more?

I have never really played a lot of mp games myself before, but have found myself clocking up 70 hours and counting in this. I'm mostly a singleplayer guy, enjoying games like Stalker and Turn based tactics like Xcom and Jagged Alliance.

For me that 30mins or so of the match is really well balanced between the quiet stealth of the early game looting and the thumping tension of late game circles. I have only played solo so far. What is it that secret sauce for you?

Personally I'm fine with it, as the only animation tied to it only tilts your character's head a bit to the left or right.
It's already way harder to be aware of your surroundings in third person, taking away the ability to look behind you seems too much. In Arma its pretty much perfect.

I dunno, if I wanna look behind me I just turn around like in any other FPS. It's fine for me, I enjoy the limitation, or at least if they were to adjust it further to add the animations to make it better representative as an onlooker.

Man I do enjoy FPV a decent bit but deaths seem so much more bullshit in it than in TPS.

At least weirdly it seems like the people I'm up against have better knowledge of where you're and where your moving in First Person over Third Person.

That's the experience I've had thus far.

Dats me

Though I try to be more mobile now, if there's a prime spot in the circle, I'ma camp it

I turned down the settings and man the game is ugly as Bronsonlee, whew wee.

Anyone else getting lag today? I was fine until our last game of squads, consistent network lag for us all at once.

I got lagged out on my 2nd to last match, then a crash.

My latest match was 99% smooth. (Had one quick hiccup at the beginning during looting)

Got 3rd, today I learned that while vehicles in the very last circle can be great. A dacia going up hill means you're easy pickings lol.

I should really just kill myself by going towards the blue if I make it to the top 10 because my hands feels so weird from all the stress.

FPP solo feels particularly violent. With everyone's perspective being limited, awareness goes down and people tend to stumble upon other players more often. The ebb and flow of the game is changed too, I feel. Sure there is an initial culling of players early on, but there is a lull around 50-40. I find that the number lingers there for about 4 circle cycles. Mid to late game, from my games at least, have way more people alive than TPP. By the start of endgame, shots start to pop off at all directions and people start to book it to avoid the blue. It is all thrilling and new.

Are first person duo games fixed? The bugs relating to invisible partners and both players losing when only one person is killed?

Will they add in a less hardcore FP mode for duos? I think it's shit you can't mark the map or revive teammates just cause your in FP

Is this game worth the price right now? The concept sounds appealing, but is it worth more than 10-20 hours right now? Is it worth it to purchase now for the discount? Seems like with its success itll be around long term
I have just clocked 200 hours. You decide.

I hope so. Happened yesterday to me and my friend when we made it to the last 10.

That's a glitch. Not intentional.

I played a few FPP duos earlier and it was fine, I did like the bugged version though, was great fun with my friend in the car when I was directing him etc. Also that "oh shit, is that you!??" when we were looting separate houses.

Game has been awesome today, night and day compared to last night.

It's fixed. Played FPP in Duos with a buddy with (almost) no problems. The only thing that was bugged, that I didn't see his player icon on the map when I was spectating.

The FPP contention is really hard to nail down.

On the one hand it's MORE balanced because visibility is worse for everyone. I've made it to top 5 twice solely on the merits of being prone in grass - the lower camera makes grass super viable especially towards end game.

On the other hand, it's much LESS even handed and "lite" (which makes it less playable in general) because you can't be checking 360 degrees at all times and spacial awareness is much harder.

Camping definitely feels more viable in FPP but that's because EVERYTHING feels more dangerous/exposed in FPP. Even while camping you're 10x more on edge and just don't feel safe.

I love it but it feels like a totally different beast, almost a totally different game. FPP feels almost like an MMO STALKER or Fallout game.

I hope they can rollout OC FPP soon. Not sure why they only limited it to EU and NA.

how do you get keys for the crates?
You buy them for "$2.5" (who wrote that?)

Which rolls into my question - is Gamescom crate likely to sink in value as more people claim them? They are going for around $3.80 now. CSGO poisoned the well on me opening cases.

It will inevitably go down a bit in the following weeks, but then when they can no longer be obtained (27 August) they will start rising.
