PlayStation buys Firewalk Studios

Who at Sony saw Concord and thought "let's buy these guys"?

Fire that person.
I have to agree. They had potential, but its a destiny clone, it feels like destiny crucible...without all the other parts of destiny. Also, it took me back to like 15 years ago, when all companies were looking for a "halo killer"

it feels like a decision made by a suit who plays no games.

If you don't like the game that's fine but it's a well made game and plays great. I'm sure they see that the devs are very talented and can make and release a game in a reasonable amount of time. Even if this game fails Sony probably saw them as at least a reliable studio for future projects if this one doesn't workout.

Yeah, part of what made Concord so interesting was that Sony had apparently seen something so good behind the scenes they decided to just straight up buy the studio.
Now we've seen it and it's just a Hero shooter with arguably some of worst visual design in the entire genre.

Sony entered into a publishing agreement with Firewalk in April of 2021. This is less than a year after the release of Valorant. Two years later, Sony buys them for undisclosed money.

The game is competently made and there is a lot of potential for Firewalk, anyone writing them off based off what they've made here whether it be successful or otherwise, has a clear agenda.

Not all games are successful.

You can always tell people apart by whether they are process-oriented or results-oriented.

Will Concord likely have the result Sony hoped for? Probably not, but do they have the talent and capacity to create games that can be successful? Obviously.

You could literally have them work on a campaign mode for Marathon and most people would be happy.

It's possible there was such a premium on big, capable multiplayer studios that PlayStation felt forced to buy them. Not many of those studios out there in the age of multiplayer.

Concord plays extremely great. PlayStation now has 2 studios that know how to build great gameplay within the FPS genre. Bungie and Firewalk both know what makes a game fun to play.

The only thing Firewalk needs to do is get better character artist, that's literally it

Sony had agreed to fund and publish Firewalk's game back in 2018. They only disclosed such partnership in 2021, but SIE WWS/PS Studios has been with Firewalk from the very beginning, in fact, it was them that insisted on getting the studio separate offices from the other teams their previous owner, ProbablyMonsters, had in incubation.

Bro 2 months ago you said this game would be successful.
Then one month ago you said "let's wait for the beta."
Now you're talking about closing the studio if the game flops.

Please acknowledge how far you've moved the goalposts.

I never said the game 100% would be successful. Post the receipts or GTFO

I just wasn’t automatically throwing it under the bus based purely on aesthetics.

I said it looked fun and could be successful. Being fun is one aspect of success, even if it doesn’t catch on commercially.

Honestly thats exactly what needs to happen, Marathon NEEDS a campaign, its a highly influential series and Sony is missing a trick not making it a tentpole FPS game for PS.
If the only way this happens is through Firewalk doing it then yes that needs to be it.

I’m failing to see what’s so bad about it. I’m not a hero shooter guy or much of a PvP guy at all and I thought it was solid and pretty fun. 🤷‍♂️

Where did you find this information?
IGN Interview, April 2021
Tony Hsu / Studio Head of Firewalk Studios said:
With ProbablyMonsters’ support, we were able to really focus on a game concept we’ve been excited about and we met Sony in 2018. And since that first meeting with them, they’ve been incredibly excited and huge supporters of not just the team, but also the project that we’ve been working on.

It was an example, but I don't think that's super likely given the time frame. Marathon comes out next summer.

I am sure Concord is a decent Game, but I think people are tired of Hero shooters in some respect. It was a purchase made when something was how or wanting something to fill out their catalog but became irrelevant by the time it was released.

The gameplay is solid

They can be folded into Bungie if concord flops

I mean two days ago he was claiming this game was receiving incredible word of mouth:

This has a “holy shit this is awesome” word of mouth with its beta

Its not bad, its just not great either. It also has a lot of competition and most if it is free to play.

Crucible might do well on destiny but the numbers playing it are massively boosted because many quests and progression systems require you to play crucible even if you don't want to.

It's fine for an hour here or there but it's the one aspect of destiny I get bored of quick. I'll be avoiding concord and keeping cod as my jump into for a quick shooter fix game.

The thing is I'd sort of be the target audience for that, I spent most of my time in Destiny 1 in the Crucible. I like the idea of a standalone crucible where all the balancing and design is focused on PVP and I don't have to go grind PVE content to get competitive gear.

And yet I'm I'm still out because I don't like the Hero shooter approach and the visual design is incredibly off putting. Destiny might have looked a bit generic and derivative from Halo but overall it still had a cool pleasing look
I'd much rather play as a generic space marine

than any of the bootleg Guardians of the Galaxy people in Concord

I know, highly unlikely sadly.
Im certain we’ll see a Marathon trilogy remake eventually though, if theres one franchise that has no business being a Extraction shooter its Marathon 😂
I dont think Bungie has remade any of its titles and as they are rebooting Marathon as a hybrid Hero/Extraction shooter, id say chance of getting a remake of the trilogy are zero.

Well, let’s see. Firewalk released one of, if not the most polished betas I’ve ever come across, the gameplay was rock solid, as was the overall build quality, and it had superb production values. Overall, clearly the work of a very competent group.

So, worst case scenario is that Concord fails to do wonders, and Sony still has a very competent developer in its stable.

Not that I’d expect the resident serial cucks to get that.

This question has been lingering in my mind for a while.

Does polish make a game good?

Or is it something else?

Being able to release a first publically playable build with this level of functional polish certainly speaks to the competence of the developer. Which was sort of the point of the post you quoted.

Fire that person.
For the type of game that it is, there is only one big issue: due to wokism they avoided to include appealing and charismatic characters for the target user of the genre and instead focused to fill a DEI checklist. In a hero shooter to have characters very appealing for the shooter players is key.

Other than that, the game seems very well done: visuals are great, art, animations, cutscenes, music, audio design, gameplay, game design, general polish, bugs, performance, online, etc. has a very high level. The team has done a great job.

They just need to get rid of the DEI team, stop the woke bullshit and to stop working with people like Sweet Baby Inc, but that's more a Sony issue than a Firewalk issue.

I personally would also ask for a proper single player campaign and more single player content, but I understand that I'm not the average shooter player and that nowadays in shooters what works is the MP.

Yes, polish makes a game good. A polished game is obviously better than an unpolished, half baked, buggy game.

But obviously there are more things too.

Yeah, and they can rename the studio "Billions Wasted"
Billions? Absolutely nothing leads to think they invested billions on it, even combining the budget and the studio acquisition.

It's also pretty dumb to talk about wasted money when they don't even have released their first game.

That person is already out, the name is Jim Ryan.
The head of PS Studios, who pretty likely had a bigger weight in the decision of the acquisition, was Hermen Hulst, now promoted to co-CEO.

This game would struggle as a f2p game. It’s absurd that they think charging money for it is a good idea. Also absurd that someone at Sony was so impressed with it that they bought the whole studio. This game will be lucky to be as successful as suicide squad.

Now that we know it will be a flop, the question is how much money Sony wasted on the acquisition, the salaries of the 150+ employes, ads, the rent, tech, the pronouns and characters?

I honestly wonder if Concord was supposed to be a Guardians of the Galaxy hero shooter and they just lost the license or decided they could make it more generic and own the IP themselves.

It just looks like such a “we have Guardians of the Galaxy at home” game.
