A sign of the real economy but my elected leaders tell me things are great and present me with fake data showing low unemployment and job growth!
Both can be true as different industries are impacted by different variables. While many sectors of industry spun down during the pandemic, the tech industry over staffed to meet temporary growth in demand.

Edit:I'm speaking in general terms, of course.

Not surprising I guess. Unfortunate for those who will lose their jobs.

I'm not someone who is pro or con on the economy. It's definitely in a weird place though and this is an industry hitting a bit of a rough patch.

Someone made a thread yesterday where they asked GPT to come up with a concept/outline for a Zelda battle royale game, and it instantly generated a genuinely brilliant game concept. That is something that would have previously required a group of people locking themselves in an office for a week plotting ideas on a whiteboard and pitching it to internal focus groups to trim the fat.

I wonder if emergent tech is responsible for all these layoffs or if it's something else. Either way it's not good. Now these people will have to pick up a couple lower paying jobs, which will be reported as "job growth" in the media.

Delivering and sustaining social, online experiences – allowing PlayStation gamers to explore our worlds in different ways – as well as launching games on additional devices such as PC and Mobile, requires a different approach and different resources."

I hope concord was one of the canned games

That all really sucks. Wonder if vr development is being pulled back and hence why PC support is coming. Either way really bad for the people losing their jobs. This now has hit everyone, did everyone overhire last year? Definitely a trend across the board.

If I were Sony, I’d cancel the PS5 Pro, discontinue the PSVR2 and focus on ending this generation sooner, and push for the PS6 to release in late 2025 or early 2026. The industry needs to get the stink of this generation off of it.

That's sad but not surprising. What is kind of surprising is that even golden geese ND and Insomniac are getting hit.

Sony introducing LaaS, layoffs as a service.

I dunno, I mean no one wants people to lose jobs obviously but we lack incredible amounts of detail for these type of events. And in the case of other layoffs as well. Generally businesses don't close profitable or essential area's of output. We're not really going to start understanding this until we get the tweets and profiles of those let go.

That's the absolute opposite of what they should be doing it they want to recoup their investments and make more money.

This industry is fucked.

Keep supporting GAAS trash and subscriptions. Lmfao

Buying games for 70 bucks en masse is the only fix
Seriously, devs need to chill with these 20+ hour games. Scaling things back is the way to go. Studios are struggling with crazy high development costs and one flop shouldn't sink a studio. It’s ridiculous.

I'm not surprised that the London studios are getting the boot. They were past their prime from the PS2 era and haven't released anything in the past 5 years while having a studio in one of the most expensive cities on the planet.
Just take a look at their output. From 2002-2005 they released more games than from 2009-2024.

Imagine being the best studio in the industry and getting discarded like an aborted fetus by execs who got rich off of you.

The industry doesnt know how to value its own artists. This is why people leave the industry.

I don't know so I am not asking rhetorically, I am really asking: isn't it the same for TV and movie productions? A lot of staff will be hired for that production and then let go afterwards?
