Got mine today, played with it for 2-3 hours.
I was going to do short summary form, but it doesn't chronicle the journey and important points.
So took it out of the box, great packing, awesome feel, units feels premium. Usb c to c (vs a to c) cable and no charger is lame.
Didn't change any settings on ps5 at first.
It fired up, updated, took about 10 mins.
It brought up the code, I scanned it with the ps app, and it fired up first try.
Played a few games, wasn't really running that well in terms of lag/framerate. Screen color, contrast, and sharpness great overall. (More on movement later) As expected, the ergomincs and controls are amazing.
But to addres my isdues, went to ps5, turned off 120hz. Some improvement.
So it's running pretty good, but then I start a game and something happens, I end up having to reboot both the device and the ps5 to get them to reconnect. I do this a couple of times, load into that ps4 zombie game lol can't remove the name, it turns into a slide show. I can still control things but at 1 frame every 2 seconds. Reboot portal, no change.
So another reboot of ps5 later, I decide maybe some of these issues stem from cec controls being on still. I disable them. Reboot both again. Interesting, from this point, not only the problem goes away, I see another improvement. Now the lag is almost completely gone, like excellent. Frame rates looking good.
My only complaint left is the blurring I'm seeing on the screen that appears to be related to the lcd panel itself. (Mostly obvious when turning left or right fast, quick movement) It's not horrific, but it reminds me of a cheaper or older lcd tv.
I guess it could be the compression, but I don't think so based on my next test below.
So just to see, I fire up s23 ultra with the ps5 controller and remote play app. To my surprise, I'm getting a lag free experience here, and no screen blurring on turns. Like looking and playing amazing.
So where does that leave me? Not sure yet, maybe with the Steam Deck oled on the way I can divert to that, if I can get it to run like the andriod app with an oled phone. (That surprised me, in the past this didn't work as well for me)
But I can say this, it's the portal is an excellent device that I think will make most people happy. The 8" screen is absolute perfect size. Maybe they can iron out the quirks with resolutions, cec, etc, so you can have 2 profiles? Rebooting needed on ps5 side is a real problem if you are traveling. I would like keep my cec on and having to disable it is annoying. Also an oled version of this device would be even better.
My overall score in progress: 8.5
Reccomendation to buyers: Don't give up right away if not smooth.
