The more games I play and the more time I have with this, I think it works the best when it leans into more gimmicky things and really leaning into the vr aspects instead of trying to be more video gamey. For example Im having a blast with Synth Riders, Crisis Brigade 2, Pistol Whip. Something like Legendary Tales, id much rather play on a traditional console, same with the newly released Behemoth. For me its best when it feels like its a home arcade or some Dave and Busters like experience.

I think the arcady games work super well. They have been more figured out. Possibly because they have to focus on actual gameplay. And they really do show that balanced and challenging gameplay can be done in vr.

For me though, I want big and more complex games. But all the adventure and exploration and npcs etc can't save a game where the attempted gameplay is bad. With a fantasy rpg, there's really no getting around the need for lots of fighting. Even the maligned combat of skyrim manages to hang in there over the course of hundreds of hours. For a lot of people, at least. It's not particularly good but it's at least inoffensive. Especially for casuals, it lets you use your imagination to come up with strategies, then gives you consistent controls and moves to get by. More than I can say for poor behemoth, that they obviously put so much effort into trying to make it work.

...

Sad story:

After playing one more session of behemoth last night, I decided I was well and truly disappointed after all this waiting. So I tried something... I played rebirth on the virtual big screen. Simply playing that game with the sights and sounds of my room blocked out on a flat screen that filled all of my vision, I was almost immediately more immersed than playing behemoth and I stayed that way until I had played longer than I intended. Because the game is just way more fun.

Performance limitations aside, i really wanted to have rebirth with a simple, controller-driven vr mode. :/ It would instantly be one of the best vr games. Sad, but true. Many would call it not true vr. But I bet if you gave it to a non-vr gamer, they would say the game still kicks ass and the immersion of being there with things at scale and with depth perception is better than a lot of "true" (aka vraf) vr games.

Totaly disagree, games like Resident Evil Village and Gran Turismo 7 demolish all native vr titles on psvr2

It's two divergent paths for vr games, but I'm on your team. Those are far better than most native vr games, and that's 90% because they were great without vr. They are just great games made better with vr.
I'm on the side that likes both equally. I want a big, full scale game, but a made-for-vr game could be great too. Needs more Astrobot VR!

I absolutely love VR, but completely agree some of the community needs to relax with the VRAF or bust mind state for everything.

Some games would benefit greatly from being able to just use a controller and it would also be beneficial for VR in general as in being supported more and more.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a prime example of this and its absolutely ridiculous (as much as I love it) that Astro Bot 2024 didn't support VR, even if it was just a basic implementation of it.

I think it's crazy how few games just use a controller. When psvr1 was first announced, I thought that if was going to get it, I'd get the set without the moves because I was more interested in games that just use a controller. Good thing I didn't do that...

Some of the best games- wipeout, astrobot, ultrawings, re7, Skyrim ... All fine with a controller. The controller lets your body disappear. Ironically, a great way to solve the problem of getting body presence right.

The best game for hand presence for me actually was Skyrim, though. I rarely played it with a controller and it was awesome being able to rummage through shelves and tables. Or shoot magic in two directions. That's a case where I really thought having hands added a lot.

You gotta play Ghostbusters. It's like something you'd wait in line for at Universal Studios, or an Arcade game that costs $5 per credit. Runner is like that too in a way.

I get where you are coming from but I do love the immersion that VR brings to traditional gaming. Crouching down behind a crate whilst reaching above your head to turn off your head torch to avoid being seen as you hear enemies approach in the dark tunnels of Metro Awakening is a visceral gaming experience unmatched in flat gaming. The feeling of being there is intense. For most game types I cannot go back to flat screen gaming.

Man, I am done with Behemoth until I see what the patch on the 12th addresses. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

What a disappointment. Started off really well and I really enjoyed the level design, block puzzles, grappling hook, and some of the combat...but the combat is just too inherently borked. I'm at the final miniboss and it's just not worth it. Trash AI, trash mechanics, it's an absolute nightmare. It's like this game doesn't allow you to engage with it. You're just constantly dealing with the bs it's making you navigate.

I am curious how others will think of this particular miniboss and if anyone finds an effective way to approach combat, please share because I would love nothing more than to actually enjoy this game across the board.

I think most reviews are overhyped. It's a good vr game with decent graphics and average gameplay. Imo there's nothing revolutionary about it. I think Asgard's Wrath 2, Batman, Alyx, Vertigo 2, Resident evil vr are much better games. Asgard's Wrath 2 combat for example is way more fun and dynamic. Don't get me wrong Behemoth is good, but far from being exceptional :/

Just played a bit of Wizards Darktimes Brotherhood, needed a palate cleanser.

I really enjoy this game. I don't think everyone would appreciate the gesture-based combat but it's damn fun. So chaotic. Great visuals, atmosphere. It's almost like a Jim Henson-inspired dark fantasy. Also itching to play some Ruins Magus. I got them at launch and really enjoyed both but had to drop them for whatever reason.

Whats your opinion on Ruinsmagus?

It's great. You pew pew from your hand like mega man and the dungeons look like the twilight realm from twilight princess. There's a town/hub and it's alot of smoke and mirrors because there isn't much to do or interact with in it, but it's nice that its there and its a solid game acroas the board. I havent played it since launch so I don't remember a ton. I think its rarely mentioned because it released during a time when people were being overly harsh towards most PSVR2 games and this game received a bit of flak that seems to have scared people away (without parole gave it 5/10). I'll probably play some of it later in the week and will post some clips.

Ruins Magus was a big surprise and is one of my favorite game on the system. It is a small action dungeon rpg with great combat, beautiful music, a great art direction and a very enjoyable 10 hour+ campaign.
These guys had also a lot of brilliant ideas for VR cutscenes.

Highly, highly recommended.

I am 4 hours into Behemoth and damn I love that game.

I personnally dont have issues with combat: I can dodge and parry reliably and I think it is more than decent. I think the main thing is you need to play more passively than in Legendary Tales: if you try to brute force ennemies or being extremely agressive, then it can indeed be a bit janky. But if you wait for a parry or a dodge to punish the ennemy, it will perfectly work in my experience.

Not saying that combat is amazing, it is definitely not the genius of Legendary Tales, but I have fun with it and find the mini boss pretty cool to fight.

First Behemoth was also great and worked perfectly for me. No issue to climb on it or to kill it, and damn that was fucking impressive!

And for the rest, this is clealry top notch for a VR game imo: great and clear graphics, smooth framerate, good art direction, interesting level design and fantastic sense of scale.

Extremely happy with it!

Keep sharing impressions and tips please. I started to sour about midway through the 2nd area and it gradually went completely downhill from there. Purely combat too, everything else was fine and enjoyable.

Basically my strategy is to first get rid of the small ennemies with the bow: I had issues aiming with it at first but after a tiny bit of practice it became second nature.
Then once the big mobs come, what I do is simply face them, wait for them to hit me: parry or dodge, then I punish them with a few swings with rage activated. Not the best combat but still pretty enjoyable, especially when you master the bow and can kill 5 ennemies in a glimpse. So satisfying!

Its also important to note that I play with the axe, which makes parry harder but is way more efficient to get rid of ennemies armor.

I don't know, parrying felt weird at first but after a few ennemies it became easy to do. You need to gently swing your weapon, not only put it in front of you if that can help.

Why the fuck does this new PSVR2 have a HDMI to USB C cable for the Sense controllers rather than the USB C to USB C cable?

I just tried this HDMI to USB C cable and it doesn't charge the Sense controllers.

FUCK!!!

EDIT: Nevermind. It's working.

HDMI?!?

By the way, mine have always been flaky charging. Sometimes they don't and sometimes they drain. I get the strange draining phenomenon with my ds5's, too. It's only once in a while but obviously annoying. The more common issue is that they don't want to start charging off of particular cables.

Pretty much what I do minus the rage. I mostly rely on rage for arrow attacks. I love one on one, or a group of scrub enemies, i love the axe too. What I need to do is slow my movements. I saw a comment on YT saying the same. Might work.

I'm still holding off for the patch but I definitely will be back in at some point.

In the clip below, I was purposely not using the axe and not always trying to parry, just mostly block. Whenever I can get a one on one with a decent knight I try to get a better feel for how things work. So much i enjoy about the game but man, the shield miniboss broke me. I just want to properly engage with that fight and not cheese it.

Playing GT7 in VR is incredible after playing the free trial.

I'm going to have to buy it.

Are they any VR must haves currently on sale on PSN?
Not sure if they are on Sales, but here are imo some of the essentials for PSVR2:

Moss 1&2: PSVR2's Zelda in a nutshell. A pure wonder of an adventure, with 12+ hours of content. Stellar in every way.

Resident Evil 4: one of the finest action game ever made. The port is not as good as RE8 (2d cutscenes, some weird third person view transition etc..) but damn this is a stellar experience through and through.

Legendary Tales: dark fantasy action RPG heavily influenced by Kings Field and the first Diablo games. 25+ hours campaign, best melee combat in VR, huge replayability and a brilliant, old school atmosphere.

Into The Radius: Stalker-lite in VR. 25+ hours campaign, stellar gameplay, addictive loop, insane atmosphere.

Red Matter 2: stellar adventure game with insane graphics, top notch atmosphere and great puzzles. Some scenes in this games are absolutely jaw-dropping and the 6+ hours campaign is never boring.

And so, so much more!

Tried the freebie Gran Turismo. Holy cow it’s good. I’ve tried racing in VR before but it’s never felt or looked this good. I’m using a standard gamepad but I’m now realising why folks spend serious money on steering wheels etc.

My advice is to list whatever games you're interested in so we can all provide some feedback. There's a good variety of thought in this OT, we won't steer you wrong.
Right now, there's these two pages of PSVR2 sales.

Just curious if there were any must haves or hidden gems in this bunch I should get.

Edit: My experience with my PSVR2 has me excited that I'm going to get these games on sale:
Pixel Ripped 1978 - $12.49
Max Mustard - $20.99
Gran Turismo 7 - $29.39

Now that I'm off work I wanted to make a list of some of my favorite games. I'll add clips where I can. I didn't include RE4 or Village because those are a given.

In no particular order.

The Foglands - Roguelite with an engaging story, it feels more like an action/adventure w/ roguelite elements. It's considered one of the worst games and it kind of was at launch but it was greatly cleaned up and man it's so good if you learn and engage with the mechanics. The movement speed and freejump/platforming are the best on PSVR2 IMO. Tons of variety in combat, tons of exploration. I don't recommend this if you don't have your VR sea legs though. Foglands is best when you're running and jumping and engaging with the chaotic nature of the gameplay. Standing around and pew pew pewing does not make this game shine.

Max Mustard - This is the indie Astrobot and it's insanely impressive. Hands down the best pure platformer on the headset.

Happy Funland - Walking sim that places you in an abandoned Disney World. The humor is dark and actually funny. Combat is janky as hell but it's a total afterthought and doesn't happen often. You're there to admire the artstyle, laugh, and ride rides.

Into the Radius - Awesome STALKER clone, VRAF in the best of ways and it looks fantastic on the headset. An absolute must-own if you like shooters and survival horror mechanics. A ton of gameplay options too, you can make it easy as hell or crank it up to brutal levels. It has something for everyone.

Genotype - Insanely impressive Metroid clone with a sprinkling of survival horror elements; limited inventory and when you die, you go back to your last save. Buttery smooth gameplay and crisp visuals.

Bulletstorm VR - This game was a complete mess at launch but the developers actually managed to fix everything and even added in new content, horde mode. Looks damn good in the headset and is a really fun campaign. I never played it on PS3/360, really cool to experience it in VR for a first playthrough.

Propagation: Paradise Hotel - For me, this is hands down the scariest game for PSVR2. You essentially get an indie version of REmake. Total classic-era survival horror gameplay. It looks great and plays even better. Sound is taken into account and they translated it to opening doors and drawers. You will be closing that door so gently, like you're 16 and sneaking back inside on a saturday night, and it's smooth as hell. It's insanely immersive and that's a big part of why it's so damn terrifying. It's relatively short, 5-6 hours but man, you will be glad when it's over. The adrenaline dumps this game gave me were on a level I'd never experienced before. I would have to sit down due to exhaustion at the end of each session.

Hubris - Great sci-fi FPS campaign. It's like you either love this game or don't like it. I really don't know why anyone wouldn't enjoy it but 100% to each their own. Fun shooting, good pacing, climbing, swimming. This game has great use of swimming and underwater combat. Looks great in the headset.

Moss 1&2 - Absolutely charming and fun as hell adventure game. It's third-person, kind of overhead in a way. Two absolute must-own games IMO.

Red Matter 2 - I actually think RM1 & 2 are a touch overrated. The 2nd is infinitely better than the first when it comes to gameplay though. I truly believe the aiming/shooting misaligned in RM2 but there's only a handful of combat sections and they aren't hard to get through. The game is all puzzles but it looks damn good in the headset and the jetpack you get is awesome. Boosting around and admiring the visuals is a total joy. This is also a great game for getting your sea legs because you're never at risk of dying and you can take the game at your own pace. It also uses physics to great effect. Stacking stuff up in VR can be fun as hell. My first time playing, I spent like 30 minutes tossing a boot into a laundry cart. Like I was playing bags/cornhole.

Cactus Cowboy: Desert Warfare - This game honestly might have the best FPS campaign on PSVR2. It's a solo-developed game with crude graphics. You play as a Special Ops Cactus fighting a war against bugs. The voice acting is AI. It sounds dumb as hell and it is but the gunplay and overall gameplay is so damn good. Incredibly impressive game. Even the credit crawl in the main menu is done well. The banter between the cacti's as the credits scroll is hilarious.

Organ Quarter - My personal favorite VR title. This was a PCVR kickstarter game from 2017. Total shoestring budget, team of 3 people. 1 guy did programming, 1 guy did the art, 1 guy did the music. It's basically a mix of RE 1996 and Silent Hill in VR. It's so damn good, legimately one of the best classic-style survival horror games ever made IMO. Not VRAF whatsoever, more like someone took a PSX survival horror title and slapped a VR mod on it.

Runner - Essentially the highway motorcycle scene from Akira in VR, while shooting guns and swinging a plasma sword. Procedurally generated levels, awesome soundtrack, one of the characters is voiced by the guy who did Spike in Cowboy Bebop. It's the best bang for your buck on the PSN store IMO.

There are a ton of others but of the 89 games I have in my library, those games in particular really stand out to me and I can always go back to them. You just recently got a headset right? If so, my humble advice is to not rely solely on YouTube and Reddit for reviews. Please believe that so many games get roasted, sometimes rightfully so, but many of these games get fixed with patches and no new reviews come out. I can't stress how chill the PSVR2 community is on gaf. Make this your first stop for impressions on games you're interested in.

edit- How could I forget Legendary Tales. Souls/Diablo style game, 4 player coop (or solo), physics based combat DONE RIGHT. This game is a freaking dime and an absolute must-own if that sounds like something up your alley and you have some friends to play with. I would gladly coop some Legendary Tales. It is a total riot with friends.

I have a lot of these already wishlisted, but you mentioned several games I wasn't aware of that I'm now keeping eye on when they go on sale. Thanks.

It's Christmas time and I'm feeling all in on VR so I said fuck it and treated myself by buying these games currently on sale: GT7, Max Mustard, Pixel Ripped 1978, Arcade Paradise VR, and Kayak VR: Mirage

Pixel Ripped 1995 is really good too. I was born in 85 and man, they did such a good job of nailing the vibe of being a kid back then. Really charming game. I need to get 85 and 78.

Played a few hours of Behemoth and it's alright. The graphics are absolutely sublime for VR but the gameplay hasn't really grabbed me. Fighting more than one enemy at a time is cumbersome and the impact of hitting someone with a melee weapon feels off. I wish they had gone with a melee system closer to Blade and Sorcery as that feels awesome.

I started a new game last night, couldn't resist.

It was much smoother, which isn't surprising considering VR is usually that way, but my critiques still stand. Simply knowing certain aspects helped me avoid some of the issues I have and the first Behemoth actually felt fluid but Skydance really needs to clean up the final phase. I completely understand why some people say the boss freezes up. He mostly does because the game wants you to stand in a specific area so his ball and chain attack will trigger. If you don't move to the area, he'll just stand in place for eternity, lol.

Not trying to shill my channel but I have timestamps for the first miniboss and first behemoth, in case anyone is interested in what I described above. That was a great session last night, as much as I dislike certain elements, I can't deny that I find the game incredibly satisfying. I really hope it gets smoothed out. 🙏

Edit- I realized last night that the dodge cooldown meter is borked. The meter will reset and the icon will flash but the dodge still won't work until half a second later or so. May seem trivial but it's probably why the dodge always feels off when I need it the most, it feels like input delay but I don't think it is. It's like the games internal timer is off.

Hmm looks like legendary tales has a trial. And it's on sale. I like what I'm hearing from the wo parole review.

Thanks to the trial, I'm going to give swordfighting another chance. I'm still feeling really down on that but LT looks to have a fully fleshed out game around it.

And I didn't see any climbing. Is there any? :lollipop_downcast_sweat:

Playing GT7 in VR is incredible after playing the free trial.

I'm going to have to buy it.

Are they any VR must haves currently on sale on PSN?
Not sure on sale but if you like narrative puzzle games I recommend : 7th Quest, Retropolis 2 Never Say Goodbye, The Room vr. Also not many people recommend here Crossfire Sierra Squad but I think its solid shooter worth of checking.

Legendary Tales is amazing. Just know that the first contact is rough as hell: the dev made some weird choices in terms of controls, like looting is done by lowering the right stick..

Once you understand these few quirks, you are in for a treat!

There is climbing in the game, but it is very rare so no worries. There is one infuriating puzzle in the first dungeon that involves climbing, but you can just avoid it.

Looking for opinions before spending money on 2 games I'm looking at. My main focus with PSVR is playing GT7 which is an amazing experience.

But being a Transformers and Star wars fan, does anyone have feedback on those 2?

Transformers is a decent rail shooter but its a port of an old game and I would not recommend it with how many amazing games you can find for the headset.

Star Wars is pretty cool, but if you have ps+ premium it will be "free" in a few days.

At worst, if you can just take one month of premium and then you can play some very good stuff (Synapse, Walking Dead, Ghostbusters etc...) .

What kind of games are you looking for? Arcade-y stuff or a more full fledge experience?
