Pokémon Community Thread 3: "Soon, All of Hoenn Will Be Under Its Withering Glare…"

I use Paint.NET for my image editing needs. I don't like GIMP a bit - the user interface is awkward.

*themes all the laptops to be some kind of Pokémon*

I'm new here. Just beat black 2 and i said this in another thread, but what the hell happened to the elite 4? I remember when i played emerald version they were hard as hell. but this game i only used one revive and like 3 super potions

Kids kept on getting stuck at the E4 so they nerfed it. Well, that's my theory at least.

The rematches are legit, though, unless you use overleveled things.

I don't think the E4 in Gen V was really that easy. The champions (both of them) were pushovers compared to Cynthia, though.

Even Lance? His Pokemon seemed pretty damn strong even with their levels.

For some reason I had a lot of trouble with him in SoulSilver and had to trick his main Dragonite into wasting all of its Thunders on Quagsire.

Throw a choice scarf from your mom (if you decide to save money with her she'll buy you a few choice items) on something with Ice Beam and you'll sweep everything but Gyarados and Charizard.

Ingame teams without ubers? 5ish levels below should give you a healthy challenge.

If you're using an EV-trained team then you'd need to be at a much lower level.

I am ev-training a volcarona because I love it and want it to be the most fearsome monster imaginable even if it is complete overkill. 2 of my other team members have half-assed ev training.

I guess I'll go with a bit more than 5 levels down.

Everyone's a pushover compared to Cynthia though.

Good point.

Lance is a joke, dude. You can wreck basically all of his Pokémon except Charizard with a random Pokémon who can use an Ice-type move.

I wonder what's the probability of winning something in that sweepstakes.

For a game copy? Very, very small. Garbage conjectural statistics incoming

It's very difficult to make any firm numbers because we won't know how many people are playing, but this is what I came up with.

Assuming about 1/3 of all American players enter it (I'm estimating about 3-4 milllion based off of Black and White lifetime sales of about 12Mil, it will probably be on the lower end of that estimate due to the 3DS's smaller install base.) And assuming that absolutely every one uses all 24 entries and therefore has an equal number of entries:

192/72,000,000 or 2 ten thousandths of a percent per draw.

Of course not absolutely everyone is going to use all 24 entries so I'll lop off about 6 entries on average.

192/54,000,000 or 3.5 ten thousandths of a percent per draw.

If you do all 4 contest periods you might even get into the thousandths of a percent!

This is all wild conjecture and it's entirely possible your chances might actually be much better than that, so don't get too disheartened. It's not like you lose anything from trying.

EDIT: Did the cumulative prob for the optimistic value, it's 1/100th of a percent for a game.

Funnily enough, I just started a new playthrough of Diamond, and I choose it over Platinum because I don't have to get a fucking Manaphy to play the postgame.

You don't have to get one in Platinum either. You just had to go the the mansion south of Hearthome and talk to someone.

Got my DS Phat in the mail. Yay, Pokemon Emerald time!

...I don't have much money, okay? ;_; The blue model's pretty, though, aside from its screens having horrific viewing angles.

nah, Green > Steven > Cynthia > Lance > Iris > Wallace.

I'm glad we're all agreed Wallace was the worst, though.

Since I couldn't take the hype any longer for Pokemon X and Y I decided to start a playthrough of Soul Silver. I've owned it for 2 years, but just never got around to playing it (mainly because of Black 1 and Black 2). I never really liked Gen 2 back when I first played it (it's my least favorite gen right behind 4) but so far it's a lot of fun.

Considering design, music theme and teams: Cynthia > Alder > Green > Iris > Lance > Steven > Wallace.

Hoenn champions are so boring. Actually, Hoenn in general was a bit boring and yet I am here praying for remakes.

Phats are, like, $30-ish. Can be found even cheaper than that if you look hard enough.

I already have GBA Pokemon games to play, though, so I suppose you'd have to factor in that cost.
Eh, I need to find one in decent quality to really want to invest in it. Also, remembered I have SoulSilver, so there's that.

Alder has a Volcarona, he has the right to be above most other champions thanks to that. Plus, his battle theme is so weirdly awesome.

True. I got very, very lucky. Phats are usually very old so finding one in good condition can be tricky. It's not as much of an issue with home consoles because they don't have screens and their sound chips aren't nearly as problematic.

And I swear to God that half the Lites I see at school have something wrong with them.

No Elite 4 champion compares to Cynthia in terms of power, especially Diamond/Pearl Cynthia when her Pokemon had inflated levels. It's not just Garchomp, her Milotic takes ages to kill.

Diamond/Pearl Elite 4 was probably the most difficult in the series, what with Flint's typing shenanigans, Lucian's asshole Bronzong, and Cynthia's everything.

In terms of design... Steven is boring, Cynthia is less boring, Blue is hilarious thanks to his asshole personality even if his art design isn't particularly creative, Wallace doesn't feel like a champion but is way better than Steven, Iris is unexpected but still doesn't feel like a champion, Lance looks ridiculous and amazing, Alder is really cool and people just hate on him because he's easy. That Volcarona hair is both ridiculous and awesome.

I don't get how people can like Steven. He's a guy with a suit who likes rocks and has a pretty good team. Wooooh.

It might fit with an epic final battle, but I don't think it fits with the character. Also, Alder's battle wasn't even the final battle in Black and White.
People always hate his theme ;_;

I really like Alder.

Oh I don't hate it. Just felt anticlimactic.....after the climax lol.

I like Alder too. Great character design, likeable personality, unique role, awesome signature Pokemon. It's a shame he was easy, but he's probably my favorite champion after Blue/Green.

I kinda wish they made him a Bug type champion, though. It's definitely possible, especially if he had some Bug-like non-Bugs such as Kabutops or Drapion.

Partly the Bishonen looks, partly the relaxed, casual mentor personality and Friggin' Metagross. He and Cynthia aren't too different methinks.

He would have been even easier if he had six Bug-types in his team though. Or maybe not, if Scizor and Genesect were two of his six Pokémon.

Anyway, I see Alder as Bug-type specialist, after all, Steven is considered a Steel-type specialist, yet he doesn't have six Steel-types in his team.

That's why I mentioned bug-like Pokemon as type supplements. Flygon, Kabutops, and Drapion are based on arthropods but aren't Bug-type, so they could continue the theme while covering his weaknesses.

That makes sense. I guess I prefer characters who are more exaggerated.

My new avatar is the best ever. High five anyone?
