Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Normally the game loads and I'm already logged in. Only today I get the sign up option, yet click on Google and it tells me servers are down. Is that the reason it doesn't log me in automatically?.. I'll be mad as hell if I lose my progress

So how much data does it take to play this game? I don't have an unlimited plan :\

data use isn't crazy.
battery use is. It eats your battery in 2 hours which is nuts.

And the battery saver mode which turns the screen black if the phone is upside down, seems to make the server problem worse. You look at your phone taking it out of battery saver and find the nearby pokemon list is no longer updating ard/or it has that bug where the touch screen stops responding even though the map is still moving and killing the app is the only solution.

Don't worry, that's just the way the menu appears when the servers are unstable. Your progress is fine.

So John Mayer really likes Pokemon

Seems like a bunch of other celebs are really into it too haha.

Progress is all saved on the servers, so it's good. Only annoying thing is all your settings are reset when you get logged out. And if you have two factor authentication for your Google account, it's a right pain to log in all the time... and be greeted with the servers down message.

Fucking cops came and kicked everyone out of the park saying it's closed. Everyone was there playing Pokémon Go. There is no posted sign saying that the park closes at a certain time.

In the US, most parks I've ever been to are closed at sundown. At least that's how most public parks in the Midwest operate.

Being able to teleport somewhere theres actually something to do/catch. My town has a grand total of 2 gyms and 2 pokestops. It's 30km to the nearest additional ones. That's not going to get old super fast.

I mean, to be fair, not everyone lives in a sprawling big city with pokestops every couple of steps.
I have nothing around me either, as I've said time and time again. But GPS spoofing a game that is all about getting out and exploring the world seems to undercut any substance the game has to offer. Why even play it at that point?

Once rural players get past the first few trainer levels, pokéballs become so sparse that they are effectively blocked from progressing unless they lay out cash. It's really horrible the way this works right now. Regardless of how easy it is to fix, it's something that needs worked on if Niantic wants to retain these players.

Yeah, this is the situation I'm in. Right now, the game's a city app.

I don't think I can play this anymore until they update the app and/or their servers. Just went for a 45 minute walk, and spent almost the entire time restarting the app. Which means I didn't catch anything, get any stops, and my egg probably made minimal progress. Very frustrating.

What am I walking for, my health? Come on.

What. In Sydney, people are chilling with this game near the Opera House and parks in the city pretty much all night as far as I can see. I saw gyms under attack at 1:30am and I was like "what" and last night I was there to witness it myself. The lures never stop in Sydney.

Well I'm not GPS spoofing, I'm simply not playing this game because no amount of exploring will lead to anything. That combined with the grinding has turned me off completely. So I'm doing exactly as you say.

But I don't blame others if they want to.

Maybe I'm just an idiot but

There HAS to be an offline play mode somehow using only the GPS signal and the phone. So many places that would be great to explore are so rural. I'll never be able to play Pokemon Go while camping in most places, which is a shame.

Like, there has to be a solution to this. Use the GPS signal and just randomly generate Pokemon for only one player or something. I think that would make the game much more enjoyable because you'd be able to go to really out there places that might not have phone signal.

If you have no signal, can you still get 4G/LTE data service?

Has there been another online game released in recent memory that felt this half baked?

- servers constantly down
- game crashes frequently
- game softlocks after catching a pokemon causing you to lose that pokemon
- 1 HP glitch makes your gym opponent invincible
- rural areas can't play
- losing paid items due to server issues

I mean how do you have one of the biggest IPs in gaming and treat it like this?

Final Fantasy XIV did this at launch.

I'm not blaming anyone, I just don't understand the appeal of fake-playing an AR game. If you're not actually exploring, meeting people, being surprised by new encounters, discovering things, you're just plugging in the numbers and telling the game where you want to be, then you are simply filling the pokédex checklist, no? I don't see the fun in that. Maybe it's just me. Seems like you're limiting yourself to the least interesting part of the game.

To me that's like playing a shooter with an aimbot, or shifting the pieces around during a game of chess. If you aren't bound by limits, you aren't playing the game. Seems like a waste of time.

Cops played with all of us last night. There was like 80 people at the park at 11pm. They seemed to be having a great time

Yeah but whats the option? Not take part in this while everyone else is?

As someone who already walks everywhere the "exploring" part is the least interesting part to me anyway. And again I already said I'm out (because walking up and down the same street is about the least interesting or entertaining thing I can possibly imagine) but if people want to pretend to walk around versus actually walking around so they can be a part of this then more power to them.

Tonight I repeatedly got beat after knocking my opponents HP down to the last sliver and then they'd hit me until I died.

What's the deal?

Seeing random groups of 5-10 people congregated around every gym and marker in the city was pretty amazing though. Never seen anything like it.

Well personally i've found a couple parks among other things I never knew existed locally, or even looked at alot of places i've passed by numerous times differently.

It might not be to the extent of literally placing a rare pokemon at a specific gps coordinate, but exploring of a lighter variety will reward you.

So I keep getting a unable to connect to server message. While my friend sitting next to me is able to get on and I'm able to get on with a newly made account. Did my first account get banned or something?

I always turn off ar to catch pokemon, but it seems some pokemon are rearly far away in the screen and most of the times I throw a poke balls it falls short or not in the right direction. any technique on how to catch those pokemon?

Yea, battery usage is pretty extreme. The fact that the screen needs to remain on is bullshit. I have GPS mapping/track recording apps that work perfectly fine even when backgrounded with the screen off.

I have no place to restock pokéballs and have dropped $30 to keep playing. That's my limit, and if more options for restocking supply aren't added my time with the game will be over. I don't think that limits my options to "buy more" or "stop playing forever." It is always possible Niantic will realize how shitty an experience this quickly becomes for people outside urban regions, and they will take steps to make it fun for those who are right now playing a shell of the full game.

If it is not improved then yeah I'll probably never touch this again once I run out of my current stock.

I don't have anything near me either, but I still make the journey out to PokeStops. I don't have an absolute NEED to play this more than so often every day, which is what Niantic want you to do anyway.

I can't possibly stress how much I hate the nearby functionality of this game enough.

Glanced down at my screen, and saw this:

So I sprinted out the door, ran in every direction, and no matter what it stayed at three steps. So I reset the app, and all it shows is a Caterpie 3 steps away.

I think the devs owe me a Pikachu.

So anyway to stop this game from melting my phone? It heats up every time I play and over time it starts to slow down.

I've turned off AR and downloaded my cities Google map.

That's the thing though...we tried taking a few alternate routes on the weekend. 1 street back from the main street (where the stops and gyms are) there was literally nothing to be found. Further away was just as empty. Surely it's not intended to be like that right?

Unless the Pokemon is two steps away it feels like trying to track a three step pokemon is a crapshoot. Not only do you not know which direction its in but also the distance. Add in the unpredictable server. Not worth the effort at times.

so once i have the final evo of a line, say Pidgeot, i can just transfer everything else in that line for the candy? unless the moves suck or w/e. his max cp will increase with my trainer level, right? and i just need candies and such to make him stronger.

Heard a bunch of cop cars coming my direction. First thought was to open the app since there's a park 2 blocks away from where I live. Of course I see an active lure on the PokeStop. Nopenopenope

It's generally based on cell phone activity. It does also takes into account terrain type and distance from water etc.

But it's just worse if you live in a rural area. Which is silly. The middle of nowhere should be where all the nature Pokemon are found!

If you crank up spawns based on dense locations, they could invert this relationship for the nature pokemon. Then at least you get some benefit being a rural area. And when you go into the woods for a hike you'll actually find different pokemon rather than not finding anything. They could even take into account how many pokestops and gyms are in range and have some Pokemon be more common if there are few close by.

Niantic did ban for GPS spoofing in Ingress btw. My guess would be they are too busy keeping the servers from burning down to worry about it at the moment, but they keep a history of location data and used to mine it to find past spoofers in Ingress.

You get exp from evolving so you have to balance spending candy on power vs evolving dupes for exp.

I think a new limited-use item they could introduce is a compass. Attach a compass to a Pokémon in your nearby list and get pointed towards it. Maybe only 1-3 uses.

Yeah, but IMO its better to keep Pidgeys around as you can easily evolve them for 500 EXP. And unless the Pidgeot is like 500+ CP I dont think it would be particularly useful. You could go that route though.

I went out for dinner at 6.

Came back at 10 PM after meeting a group of dudes (taught them about evolving for free exp farming), then a group of girls, then a group of high school students. Then I walked around with another group of girls for close to three hours as we started with a chase for what we now believe to have been a ghost pikachu (on which we were sent by yet another group of girls who told us about it). We chased it for close to thirty minutes without ever figuring out where it was but it was definitely on our radars for a long time, then we sat down with 20-30 people at a triple-stop with lures and everything was Magikarps. Magikarp for you, Magikarp for me. Magikarp! I think we all caught at least fifteen Magikarps in the time for the lures.

Also servers crashed for a while.

Then our phones died, finally, and we eventually went our separate ways!
I even got a phone number.

ugh keep freezing on me every time catch one!!!! Do I need to uninstall and re download or something. It's getting annoying. Or is it a server issue causing the freezing.
