Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Random observations

When catching Mons, it seems that you have two general strategies:

If you throw when the circle is bigger, you get a throw EXP bonus

but if you throw when the circle is smaller, you have a better chance of capture.

Yay/Nay?

So whats the highest cp pokemon have gotten early on ? I'm still level 4, my height cp pokemon was 42 but now on my my way home from the gym I caught a 149cp Pontya and an 80cp Pickachu. Is that good ? should i focus on strengthening these 2 for my first gym once I reach level 5 ?
I'm level 4 and just found a cp 106 Eevee in my office :D that's the highest I've seen, so far.

Throw when circle is small and land inside circle for higher catch rate AND more xp

If I was to review it, I'd give it an average rating.

Same, IGN basically did just that with a 7.

It's also some pretty impressive tech, read an article last night about just how complicated and stressful it is on their servers to have the game be real time for everyone everywhere. As opposed to an MMO where there are multiple instances, etc. So while it has its technical problems I can also appreciate what they've accomplished.

Hit level 5 this morning finally, now what? I joined the red team on my way into work and was going to challenge a gym leader, but figured I'd get demolished and needed to get into work already.

So the reviews have been rolling out (kind of funny major gaming sites jumping on doing reviews for it now that it's a phenomenon). Some really bizarre range of scores and text that go along with them.

Did anyone do a review thread?

Some take it for what it's worth and some slam it as a game but still love it:

Kind of interesting how they've been treating this.
The experience is only as good as your pokestops distance and whatnot. As a rural player its a average game and nothing more since you get "taxed" it you want to play it outside due to the lack of ball income.
Its a good "meh" out of "alright"

Here's the really interesting article from the New Yorker on the background of the Tech:

The technology to make this happen is something we haven’t seen applied before in gaming. Whereas a typical massively multiplayer online game is decentralized among different servers and players, Niantic wanted to create a single source for its game. This requires extraordinary computing power and a fundamental rethinking of how gaming software is written. If a system is fragmented, all users might not be getting new information at the exact same time. Financial-trading systems also run on a single source, because everyone needs to know the correct price of a stock at the same time. “Since everything is changing constantly, this is more like a real-time financial system,” Hanke said, pointing out that the usage on Niantic’s system was “a lot, even by Google standards.”

Finally got a few 1100+ CP pokemon, so I figured I'd try to take a gym last night.

I had literally no idea you had to beat them more than once. Talk about a shitter.

I beat an entire series of 3 fights, no problems, but only took like 300 reputation away from the gym. If I wanted to actually take that gym, (roughly 8000 points), would I have to sit there and whittle away at the number 300 points at a time?

Yes, but as the prestige gets lower, the fewer Pokémon you have to fight each time you challenge the gym. So it gets exponentially easier and faster.

WOOO!!! Just caught an Eevee that popped up on my worktable just now. Are the Eeveelutions catchable wild? Or are they evolution only?

I think that we've got a phenomenon on our hands, but it's not going to last unless there is more meat to the game. People will get bored and move on without something more to dive into. I think the average play time reflects that.

This is pure craziness, lol.

This is why the reviews are so interesting right now:

It's like they can't admit that they are having fun. So I guess if you evaluate scores based on "fun" or a sum of it's individual technical parts you'd end up at a 10 or a 5.

Looking at it strictly as a videogame it isn't that good. It's quite clunky and the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.

This app is much than just a videogame though. It's on it's way to become a new social gaming phenomenon. The gameplay that's there is trivial to the bigger context that it's in. It's marvellous.

Interesting question came to mind...

The location data for this game is taken from the foundation built within their previous game Ingress, but is there any indication that additional data will be developed and new locations will be created through this game?

Does new Ingress data affect this game?

Can I do something in Ingress to create a Pokestop at my house?

I keep hearing how common Drowzees are, but I have yet to encounter one in NYC. Most common here (namely, midtown and Williamsburg) are Zubats, Pidgeys, Rattatas, and Doduos.

I'll be in Milwaukee and Sheboygan for a family reunion this weekend, so it'll be interesting to see what the common ones are out there.

Damn. Wasn't expecting him to give it THAT low of a rating.

To be fair, 5/10 is perfectly average. Which honestly, this game is. Once they fix the server and bug issues and add in some more content, it will get better.

What makes it a great game now is not the game itself but the phenomenon it has caused and the social interactions it enables.

Watching the jim stealing video about him catching a pidgey and I had no idea you could side swipe in a gym battle to make your pokemon move! does that evade attacks?

It's supposed to, but the hit detection is iffy at best. I seem to get hit even when I try to dodge, so I just go for all-out attack.
