Pokemon Game Appreciation Thread

Agreed with the exception of Miltank...for some reason I thought that a cow pokemon kicking butt was hilarious. I never really thought of Tauros as a cow.
cuz male cows are bulls.

Its funny how people want less pokemon. I actually want the world fleshed out with pokemon representations of real world animals. There should be more Bug types and Flying/Birds etc.

More Pokemon = more variety. I thought this was obvious. But here on the internet, the most obvious thing is always the least.

I don't mind more Pokemon, as long as I don't need 10 different games, and journeying to a Toys'R'us to catch them all.

Seriously. There's a ton of type combinations that haven't been used at all yet. The more diversity the better. I used to hate how so many new generations (especially Gold/Silver) wasted so many slots on baby Pokemon instead of coming up with entirely new ones, but I guess even those are useful for Little Cup.

I had Gold, Crystal and Red. I honestly played 500+ hours of Crystal alone, which was my main cartridge. Pokémon was the only game I played for like 2 years, and I had absolutely everything in it D: I'd train so many bogeyz with different movesets, I knew all the hidden mechanics in it, had a collection of rare candies just to check the DVs and a whole system that I would train my bogeyz with. Pokémon Stadium must have been the game I had the most hours logged in, ever.

It was a good time, I was 14 and I had an article about me in the official pokemon magazine :D I'd go to tournaments as part of the brazilian "Elite 4" and the champion of the tournament would play us for a spot in the Elite 4.

Being 14 was awesome. I wish I could go back to those times again.

I won't ever come back to pokemon full force again. I had 36 hours played in Diamond and enjoyed the game very much, but I think what really made me spend all that time with bogeyz was the sense of community we had back in the day. I knew maybe 100+ people who played it and we all had fun. I had friends outside of it, but it was through these people that I really started acquiring an identity. At some point all the people that I knew that played started growing up and we started sharing the same interests. Music, anime, girls, nightclubs, etc. It sounds pathetic to say, but now that I look back my network of friends really came from this group. By the end of my teenagehood nobody knew that I played at one point, nobody I knew played the game, but all my friends were friends of friends of friends from the days that I dedicated so much time to it :lol

My best friend I met while playing pokemon, and I honestly think my life nowadays would have been different if it wasn't for all these things I did back in the day.

Aaaaand the post has become a little bit nostalgic :lol :lol

Put me in the "bring more Pokemon" camp.

Unless the new Pokemon really hurt the game's universe (Deoxys is a horrible concept and shouldn't have been considered, let alone greenlighted), bring out more. The most iconic Pokemon settings are those where there are wild Pokemon everywhere, really fleshing out how expansive the world is.

I just renamed all my boxes in Platinum to go with the numbers (031-060 etc). I guess I'm going full on at it. If anyone has an event Pokemon or something he's willing to give away, like that dude with Deoxys' a while back (who is that again? can I get him?), shoot me up. Hacked or not I really don't care.
You know, if I already get a Pokemon that someone traded to me, that in itself is cheating when my goal is to catch them all by myself. I don't see anything "more legit" in that Pokemon sent to me being legit.

I have Deoxys and all the event legendary Pokemon. PM me whatever you're looking to get. :D

Sign me up as a fan of Pokemanz games that's not the mainline single player game. Pokemanz Mystery Dungeon, PokeRanger, and even smaller spinoffs like PokeRumble on WW are much better games than the glorified tutorial that is the single player game of the mainline series.

PS: Pokemon Ranger 3 was announced recently but no one cared. It's more of the same as Pokemanz Ranger 2 (judging by screens), except you can now draw spells (har har inovashun!)

I'll always remember the phenomenon that was pokemon red/blue. I was in 6th grade and teachers regularly had a pile of game boy pockets on their desks, and made our parents come and pick them up after school :lol

I haven't been able to get back into the series though. I finally bought pokemon platinum, and I beat the first 3 or 4 gyms and got tired of it. There are too many pokemon now, and they're all unfamiliar to me.

I'm stuck on the metal/electric gym leader in Platinum. All I have are flying and water pokemon and he's been sweeping me, lol. That's never happened. I've been training a Houndoom to sweep that mofo. I hate HM, at least let me get rid of them whenever I want.

pokemon series will always be in my top 3 of all time. Once you get into the battle scene, the game has so much god damn depth. So many possible teams that could work, so much customization which is one of my fetishes in games.

I love these games and at 21 I will continue to play them until I am physically unable.

Metal or Electric? I'm assuming Electric and you say Metal because of Magneton?
For Magneton, it's a long stretch, but if you have a Staraptor with Close Combat, that should do.

Specially with the 'Ability' option experimenting with them on different Pokemon can get really interesting.

It seems NOA is finally going to stop being fucking idiots and put events on Wifi (which they should've done DAY ONE with D/P) for Plat/SS/HG.

So thankfully, that seems to be a thing of the past.

He and the E4 are the first time I ever, ever had my shit wrecked hard from my standard "go through the games with one Pokemon quickly."

I was using Gyarados from the second town/city with the watch on. Destroyed all the gyms up until him.

"GO GYARADOS! DRAGON RAGE! (as this wrecked everyone else)"
"LOL SHRUG OFF AND PUNCH YOU IN THE CROTCH WITH MY ELECTRIC!"

Get around him and go to the E4 thinking "Hey, they'll be push overs and I'm over leveled like all the Pokemon games bef--"

Nope, HIGHER LEVEL THAN ME AND ABLE TO ONE HIT ME.

FFFFFFF.

I'd want a pokemon game with all the regions they have added playable. Kinda like how one of the previous games did with the boat from one region to another thing.

I remember Pokemon Red / Blue fondly.

Mostly because it had a lot of mystery around it. There'd be these asshole giant birds sitting on a random cave that would wreck your shit, and nobody bothered to warn you. You could also find Mewtwo through careful exploration.

The rest of the pokemon games lost that charm, because we all expect to find some legendaries at some point, know that we have to defeat some criminal organization, expect your rival to show up before the E4 and maybe become the champion, etc.

I guess Im in the minority.

I loved Red, it was new and fun, then I played Yellow, and then Gold, which still felt fresh, but after that...correct me if Im mistaken, but from what I see now and then, the rest are basically the same, the formula is very very dated/archaic.

Its a shame, really. There are people that laugh at the fact that I like the Pokemon universe/concept, but Pokemon fans hate me because I dislike the current state of the series.

I don't know how you guys don't get bored of the current games.

Anyway, I do believe that the best combat system for Pokemon would be an evolved version of Fallout's VATS, a bit more loose though. Its unlikely that Nintendo would ever allow this, so I guess no Pokemon for me for the time being :lol

DPPt is honestly just as fresh if not more than GSC. I like GSC more too, but as far as new content goes, DPPt destroys it. Even the battle system is significantly more advanced.

I'm one of the people who liked red and silver but don't get the same feeling from the games that came after. I think the design of the Pokemon was getting weaker with every game. One of the things that got me in the original games were the designs that actually were based on real animals or things. The new designs are (mostly) forgettable cheap sci-fi stuff and some of the evolutions don't make any sense to me anymore. :(
It's almost like "let's make a new Pokemon: some spikes here, some additional tails and stuff there...yeah, that should do it, next one!"
I'd love to see a Pokemon game that treats them as creatures interacting with their environment.

I know that there was more content, but when it comes to the battle system, honestly, it didn't really feel like it advanced much. Yes, double battles and moves classification, but the core battle mechanics didn't change, it was the same click fight, select move, and use an item/change pokemon now and then. And once again, if Im not mistaken, that hasn't changed in quite a while.

Once again, Im not hating on Pokemon, I do like it, a lot, but I just don't think that the current system is where the true potential of the series lies.

Congratulations, you just described what generally makes up a turn based JRPG battle system.
Pokemanz is more about catching monsters, speccing them however you want within the constraints of the ingame world and the battle system is only there to let you demonstrate what you have done with your little fuckers.

-Turn-based RPGs are by far my favorite game genre
-I mained Pikachu in SSB
-I dressed up as Ash for last Halloween
.

-I still have never played any of the Pokemon games (excepting Snap) for more than 15 minutes. It's really something I need to fix one day.

For somebody who has become accustomed to all the additions made since the series' inception, returning to the RBY battle system would be such a dreadfully boring experience.

Double battles in particular are more than just "two team members fight at once." I've been toying with an all-ice team lately and have been trying to make it work in doubles as well as possible. One combo that I've been trying out in the past week is having Lapras+Walrein on the field at the same time under Abomasnow's permanent hail. Walrein has a special ability that restores 1/16 of his health every turn while hail is up, and this can be abused with the moves Substitute and Protect to stall for more healing while hail pounds the opponent for extra damage. Lapras has an ability that restores 1/4 of its health every time it's hit with a water attack. Walrein knows Surf, which hits all of the other Pokemon on the field in doubles, including the partner, so one thing that I try to do when I can is have Lapras increase its attack power with Curse while Walrein uses Surf to keep its HP up and deal some damage to the opponent at the same time. Once Lapras has enough power behind its attacks, it starts blasting away, and it can use the move Ice Shard (which is like an ice-type Quick Attack) to attack before the opponent if absolutely necessary, as Curse also lowers its speed.

I mean, ignoring for the moment that using an all-ice team is pretty retarded competitively, very few elements of the previous paragraph existed in RBY, and that's only one specific example. No, the "core mechanics" haven't changed a great deal, but the strategy and tactics that emerge from them have diversified by leaps and bounds. Too much of RBY boiled down to "let's hope I can freeze their Mewtwo before it freezes mine."

I never went into the handheld bussiness, but was able to play Red because of the GB player for the N64. And what an awesome game. Back then the world of pokemon swallowed me completely.

And now I finally got a DSi and am playing the japanese version of Heart Gold so awesome!!!

Am I reading this right? You think PokeRumble is better than R/B/Y/G/S/C/Rb/Sp/E/D/P/Pt/HG/SS?

I love pokemon, so I gave Mystery Dungeon a try, and it was very mediocre imo. Pokemon rivals Mario for the text book example of putting out lazy spinoffs just because you know you can generate tons of money. Not all pokemon spinoffs are bad (pinball and snap most readily come to mind) and obviously not all mario spinoffs are bad. But for me, Rumble and Mystery Dungeon aren't even in the same league of quality as the main games in the series. There is so much polish and love put into the core entries that is without question not present in most of the spinoffs.

And how are the main games "glorified tutorials"? Sure, the first couple hours of every game always tends to drag for pokemon veterans but after that everything is up to the player and how you decide to customize your team. It's one of the more diverse games around as far as customization and ways to go about beating the challenges you are given, imo.

Man I can't wait for HG/SS. Definately my most anticipated release of the year. I've also decided that I'm FINALLY going to catch them all... which might be hard since I don't have Deoxys or Celebi and I'm not confident NOA will bring them around any time soon :( Has Celebi EVER even been released stateside? It's been a fucking decade

Well, thank you? :P

I know that's what makes it a JRPG, but why get stuck on that for more than 10 years (?) when it could be much more?

I disagree with you in that Pokemon battles aren't that important, specially when the whole series and other properties (manga and tcg) are based on the battles rather than on the collecting aspect :lol

Anyway, I know that Nintendo won't do it as it would make things more complicated, but one can dream :D

I'm really into the whole competitive Pokemon battling scene. I play on Shoddy frequently, I browse Smogon quite a bit. Honestly with each new Pokemon release, I find myself anticipating more of the changes to the metagame rather than the singleplayer adventure itself. There's just so much depth and customization in competitive Pokemon that really appeals to me.

Fuck Pokemon.
Take a look at this: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Meganium_(Pok%C3%A9mon) You notice something? He's too happy. He is a tool of battle, forced against his own will to do harm unto other creatures for the sick amusement of a prepubescent child. If he doesn't meet the expectations of his master he is exiled into box 1. A cold, desolate box. But of course he wants to please his master, so he will put up with the abuse. Day in and day out he will endure the hardships of constant battle. He will take his bruises, fall ill to poisonous afflictions, faint from utter exhaustion, but he will not relent. For he MUST appease the master who has bound him in an infernal contract with technology.

Then after all this arduous work he must face a true monster: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ho-Oh_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29. And you know what? In real life he doesn't win. No, Ho-Oh ends Meganium's existence in an instant. But Meganium's soul does not lament for he is finally free of master. The pokemon trainer quickly comes to the realization that his Sentret, Hoot-hoot, Marill and Macargo -- all of who were spared the hardships of battle that Meganium faced -- fair no better in combat against Ho-Oh. They only serve to kindle his fury, for Ho-Oh can see into the heart of man and in this child's heart what he sees is not worth redemption. And so in an act of divine wrath, this 10 year olds Journey is at an end. He and his pokemon are left to sate the hunger of Raikou, Suicune, and Entei. They feast merrily knowing that in the greed of mankind they are never left hungry long. And let me tell you the saddest part of this story GAF:
Meganium cannot learn Sleep Powder.
gg.

My younger sister grew up watching the original Pokemon cartoons, and even collected some of the cards. By proxy I absorbed some of it, the cartoons mostly, but I never played any of the handheld games until I had a DS Lite. I had heard people ranting and raving about the Pokemon games for years now so I figured hey why not I'll give it a try! Picked up Pokemon Diamond, popped it in and...

The pokemon make unintelligible screeches and squawks like it’s a damn Atari 2600 game. I was fully expecting them to sound like they do on the cartoons! This ranks right up there with the ending of Half Life 1 as my 2 greatest gaming disappointments ever.

I guess since this is an appreciation thread, it was a good game otherwise. My son is playing my copy of Diamond now, has about 45 hours into it and just got the 7th badge.

For the love of god Nintendo, why haven't you released a FULL 3D console version of the games? That bullshit in XD and Colosseum doesn't count.

That is one of the funniest things about Pokemon imo. The original 151 still make the same cries that they did on the old brick Gameboy, and it just sounds so weird when contrasted against the newer species.

One of my favorite RPG series. I love exploring the world and speccing out my team. I'm just waiting for one game that combines all handheld regions, has no story, and just lets you explore and fight your way to the top.

Because it's a ton, ton, ton of effort just to get the concept in 3D. You have to have all these models and animations and. They can do much better than Battle Revolution yes, but not on the level that you want them to do, and not on a level comparable to the DS games.

It'll be gimped content wise. There will be less of everything.

Yeah... I really need to so some appreciatin' of the anime, too.

I enjoyed it all up to and including much of the third season. Because I got in to the series so late, I didn't see as many of the earlier episodes... :(

Favorite episodes:

Ditto's Mysterious Mansion (Loved the alternative Team Rocket motto and <3 Duplica)
School of Hard Knocks ("How about some prune juice?" "I think I'll pass.")
Stun Spore Detour
Episode where Ash fights Cinnibar gum leader (Seismic Toss was cool to me. It was a letdown seeing it in the anime then seeing it in the games...)
Episode(s) with battle against Whitney (fifth season, but I liked them still)

But seriously, my younger self really liked Duplica. Now that I've gotten older and she stayed the same age, sadness.
Maybe Duplica's like Kokiri and looks the same age forever! Yeah. That's it.
I was really shocked to see her in a fifth season episode. Too bad I didn't like that episode, though.

This is why I've gotten into double battles a bit more lately. Entry hazards and the fixation on switches/counters aren't nearly as prevalent, though it's often difficult to stall in doubles as well. A lot of times you really have to think and predict your way through a disadvantageous situation instead of just switching out to a counter, and I think I prefer that.

I'm hoping Shoddy Battle 2's inclusion of double battles increases their popularity among the English-speaking community's metagame.

Yes, I'm looking forward to the release of Shoddy Battle 2 with Doubles. Doubles is so fun, and there are so many options to use and prepare for. It'll definitely be wild, and I'm sure I'll play the metagame as well as continue with singles.

As for those complaining about IVs, EVs, etc.. you don't have to breed, and train in games. If you like it, and are willing to spend enough time with it, you'll learn how to abuse RNG, to make life easy on yourself. If you really find them annoying, just stick to in-game and battles against buddies. The fact that Pokemon can be bred, and adjusted, and tweaked, so what makes the 'game of numbers', which Pokemon is, so very fun.

Changing the way Special / Physical attacks worked is probably the largest change the series has made to the core battle mechanics in its history.

? They don't make console Pokemon games. They make handheld ones. It's because they like money. The only thing I can see making more money than the handheld series is an MMO.
