Pokemon Game Appreciation Thread

btw. even though i got sick of the stale formula, i intend to re-join the fun once soul silver is released. would one of you poke-nuts care to give a short list of all the stuff you can do in that pokemon-game?
I read people saying how much there is to do, but honestly, all i always did was to fight and proceed towards the top4.

So theres fighting. There´s breeding. There´s the, what´s it english name, beauty competition...what else? I´d like to approach the game differently when I start it :)

I actually think that the beauty contests are one thing that isn't coming back for HGSS. No big loss.

The Battle Frontier is the main post-game attraction. It's basically "moar fighting," but more on the level of what you'd get from actual versus play and not stupid NPC quest trainers.

The biggest changes that come with each generation are more under-the-hood, and you wouldn't really appreciate them if you've never tried competitive play.

EVs and IVs if you want to drive yourself insane. :)

Yes, but why must 153-486 be ignored, while Chikorita is WUVVED?
I dunno. I was just saying I liked Chikorita, not that I was agreeing with that person. I think what he was trying to say that, in general, the first 151 are A LOT better than the rest.

I'm just trying to be a Pokenerd and pointing out the original is 151, not 152. :lol

But they aren't. This is usually what people who are blinded by nostalgia and haven't given the new games the time of day say.

Bayleef is actually one of my favorites. A lot of my playthroughs of Silver were with an unevolved Bayleef.

Meganium is just horrid.

So, who's the hottest Pokemon? I know people will say Gardevoir, but I am a Jynx man myself.
The trickiest thing about Gardevoir is that it can also be male.

By the way I'm usually a fire starter guy. Fuck both water and leaf.

I'm not choosing Squirtle until they make Blastoise Water/Steel like they fucking should have in GSC.

I went grass for Gen IV. Torterra > Infernape because Torterra has a Bonsai tree on his back and monkeys are stupid.

Second time in one thread.

Two more points i´d like to mention:

1.) I hate the high number of legendary Pokemon. Whats most annoying: They are taboo for many ingame-competitions, and many of them are considered cheap when playing against human opponents (at least back in the days, noone within my circle of friends was allowed to use Mewtu, too powerful). Either lower the number of legendaries drastically, OR dont limit their usage.

2.) Of course I ve heard about EV and such, these number and stats, and how you raise them through breeding. But I dont like that. Consider it being part of me growing up with the anime, but in my mind the Pokemon you get are your partners...and not your tools to create stronger breeds. Of course it was super stupid, but my favorite Pokemon always was Glurak/Charizard; and guess what I did? I used it whenever I had to fight rock-type Pokemon...thinking that by fighting its weakness, it´ll get stronger. The game didnt work like that, but the hell, it should. Let me actually train my Pokemon in unique ways instead of relying on breeding and pure, cold-hearted stats. :(

What the hell is a Glurak? There's 486 Pokemon, it's hard enough to keep track... Use the ENGLISH names.

1. They aren't restricted in their tier level, and most of the legendary trio pokemon aren't that good anyways (*cough*Entei*cough*)

2. You're thinking of IV for breeding, and they don't make *that* much of a difference, only 31 stat points at max, I really only breed for a good nature. Also every pokemon you fight gives you different EV points so you can seek out what pokemon you want to fight and train them that way

Can't wait for a pokemon that really evolves the entire game instead of just tacking on. The game has remained the same since the first entry basically (not that that is a HORRIBLE thing, I'd just like to see some REAL evolution from the series).

I hope they don't make a Gen 5- the series is just getting predictable.

Gen 2 was the best, and I can't wait for the remakes this year!

Pokemon Ranger is alright, I hope they do more with that, Dungon is stupid though.

Funny, that Charizard example is exactly what EVs come to materialize. By fighting rock types Charizard's defense went up because rock types usually have really high defense.

I'm currently training my Rhydon at Iron Island and wondering what its movelist should be before I evovle it.

Current Movelist: flamethrower, hammer arm, rock blast, scary face( its still at 42 :p)

I would go with Earthquake, Stone Edge, Fire Punch, and Megahorn

Flamethrower will suck because he has horrible Sp. Atk (like, less than base 50 I think). He's got insane attack, defense and HP, but stuff like Grass Knot will kill him. Also bunch of horrible weaknesses because of bad typing.
Rhyperior is just about the same, isn't he? Just a little better with base stats.

Hell I don't know, just make sure he learns Earthquake, and the rest doesn't matter.

Edit: Bulba says he learns Poison Jab? There you go. That covers Grass, as long as you survive the first move.

I've never played a Pokemon game.

Is this something I should change? Seriously. Not trolling. I was a year or two too old to play it when it first came out, and I never really had the urge to try it after the initial Poke-craze.

Should I try one? If yes, which DS version is a good starting point?

Platinum.

If you enjoy OCD-inducing RPGs with tons and tons of content and customization, really cool (in my opinion, it's hilarious how much social commentary is in those games) NPC dialogue, there you go in game terms. Just beware that it's a time sink, and a serious time sink. As of this moment I'm trying to find a Croagunk in the wild and I'm at about 95 hours in.

Fire Punch would cover both grass and skarm

I love the music in the games but I hate how it's always interrupted when a wild Pokemon appears. They really need to make the Pokemon appear in the overworld so I can avoid the fuckers and just enjoys the music.

Sweet. I'm driving cross country with the missus, so that sounds like a good use of all that empty time.

I assume that this is just for in-game quest stuff and not competitive?

Flamethrower -> replace with Earthquake at level 49
Hammer Arm
Rock Blast -> replace with Stone Edge at level 45
Scary Face

Replace one of the other two with Megahorn at level 57.

Basically what Upandaway said. Either Platinum or HGSS would be a fine start.

Yeah, I guess, but I always look for Poison Jab because poison usually has a lot of neutral range, with the exception of steel immunity.
Against physical teams where Rhydon is essentially a tank, it also has good use if the opponent gets poisoned.

im about to buy a black GameBoy Pocket out of nostalgia reasons, but question: Is it somehow possible to transfer your Pokemon from Red/Blue to the latest version of the NDS-games? By transferring them through the whole of all the games, until you reach the NDS? Or is there a missing link at some point?

Can't transfer anything from RBYGSC to RSEDPPt. They redid a bunch of the game mechanics between GBC and GBA so there's no way to bridge that gap. It's possible to transfer from GBA to DS, but not the other way around.

The first 2 gens are closed off from the last two.

Edit: Well there you go.

upandaway post followed by selig post followed by firestorm post please. You've managed the first two a couple of times, and an upandaway > firestorm combo, but not the whole line yet, and I wanna see it.

...even though the Charmander evolution line is for losers, and the Squirtle evolution line is the best set of Pokemon ever.

Fuck no, not until Blastoise is the steel type that he should be.
