I have a hard time believing that a new main series Pokemon game will have any sort of radical, fundamental changes to the core mechanics, but they keep bringing it up in PR and in this "announcement" so maybe...

Well it depends. Is this the first time they bring up the "innovative" BS for their mainline games? I wasn't around when D/P began appearing so I wouldn't know.

Right.
Looking back, most of the changes made from the original R/B/Y up till now have been mostly changes to the underlying mechanics that an uninformed player might not even notice.
If this is as drastic is it seems to be, then I wonder how far this new game is really going to go.

They never have. I think they usually focus on one main feature to drive home for each new version...so this could be a pretty big change.
