Pokemon sequel is under development for DS

You know, things like that which gave some Pokemon an extra stat here and there were made for the same people obsessed with IVs. For the general, casual gamer, all those changes were not as substantial. At least that's how I feel.

Keep in mind, they've still got me hooked (even though I skipped out on gen 3), but I never felt like the overwhelming majority of the stuff you mentioned was anything significant for me as a fan. The silly radio gets me more excited then that stuff. xD
 
The radio was awesome. I'm not sure if it's roughly the same in HG/SS as it was before or if they beefed up its perks a bit for that.
 
Hey, if its touch screen controllable, that's good enough for me. All those menus will be so streamlined with the touch screen!

So basically the substantial changes for the people who really get into the game don't count? the changes I mentioned were big and made it hard to go back to the other games once you got use to them. The game is basically about the battling and catching of pokemon, not the "campaign" so complaining that their aren't enough changes when you only play through the game's story is like saying a fighting games story mode hasn't changed much.

Whenever they decide to cancel the show and they'll make it the last episode's cliffhanger!

Right, well there are all types of players, and a good chunk of them are feeling that the parts of the game they appreciate have not evolved much.

This is the same reason so many people want the same series game style to transfer over to the consoles, its the belief that the parts of the game they care more about will have to be upgraded/revamped/added on to/whatever with the switch to different hardware.

So to try and discredit that part of the base isn't entirely fair.

I'm all for changes that cater to those people, but I am against the idea that the game hasnt changed. That is what the original post I quoted was saying, and he was simply wrong. I would love for the single player to be more exciting, but it doesn't hurt me that much if they continue to focus on the part that I'm really into.

Understood, then I guess we can agree where and where not the series hasn't grown.

Is this going to be shown on Pokemon Sunday, hasn't that already happened?

I want the same game formula in a new locale, with new characters, new pokemon, new music, and a few new game mechanics/gimmicks. Personally, I think that sounds great, and always has sounded great. And no, I'm not a huge pokemon fanboy. I usually buy the newest gen, play it for a few months ravenously, and then move on to another game. But still, the formula is a solid foundation for a kickass game.

It's like when Sakurai got obsessed with making it clear that Brawl was NOT going to just be Melee with new characters and new stuff. He felt it would be "pointless" to make that kind of game, and changed the game mechanics in some pretty extreme ways that diverged from what made Melee such a long-lasting fun game. Myself and so many others played tons of Melee years after it was released. Brawl was pretty much forgotten within a few months.

There isn't anything wrong with keeping a solid formula in Pokemon, and there isn't anything wrong with it in Zelda either. As soon as they start tinkering with entirely new formulas is when the mainline Pokemon games will lose a ton of momentum, in sales and general interest.
 
Things I want:
- Being able to go back to a previous region or at least a different one (like in Gold/Siver)
- Avatar accessories (like in Pokemon Battle Revolution)
- Interactive battles (side view ones would be cool)
- Splitting some attacks into offense/defence (similar to http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Counter_Shield)
- Being able to give out defensive commands when an opponent Pokemon attacks (something like the trap cards in Yu Gi Oh)
- Move improvisations (combining two attacks such as Pikachu's Volt Tail)
- Challenges that reward players with rare items such as those requried to access some legendary Pokemon
- Different coloured Pokemon (like in Pokemon Stadium)
- A sub championship (like Orange League)
- After you become champion, have other trainers (e.g., your rival) challenge you at random intervals

That's my wish list. Probably won't happen, but here's me hoping.

GameFreak does only mainline RPGs. Also late 2010 sounds about right for the next generation games
1st - 2nd was 3.5 years
2nd - 3rd was 3 years
3rd - 4rth was 4 years.
DP was released in sept 2006 so new generation games later this year would actually make sense. Also revealing first details ~8 months before release would match 4th gen reveals iirc
 
NEW pokemon? Oh hell yes. I've bought the games since first Gen and have put in 200+ hours into each of those games.

Love that shit.

People are just stupid and figure that "if it looks the same then it MUST be the same, right?" which is one of the reasons I think so many people want it to go 3D or 8 directional. The games have MASSIVE changes from gen to gen in both battling and in general, you just have to look for them instead of seeing a 4 directional tile based, turn based game with new graphics every gen.

OH, and I can see this being some kind of "3rd Pillar" (the Main Series being one Pillar and the Spin Offs/ Anime and w/e being the other). Something thats a "new Pokemon Series" but in a way that seems like almost a reboot taken into a different direction to see if it is latched onto by the fans. Maybe it's the "action infused" Pokemon game that the leader talked about wanting (he talked about wanted more action elements in the games but I could see both GF and Nintendo being scared shitless of taking the MAIN series in that direction)

Thats mainly because the translators keep calling this a "New Pokemon Series" instead of "New generation/ game of the Pokemon series". I could see something like what happening to Marion (Main series has BOTH 2D and 3D living side by side now).
But I think thats unlikely.:lol
BUT IF IT HAPPENS I CALLED IT FIRST! >:(

I doubt R/S remakes are coming for a long time. Red/Blue and Gold/Silver have only been remade because they were incompatible after the data changes made during the third gen. Ruby and Sapphire are still compatible with DPP and HGSS.

All these huge changes too, fuck the haters! Each gen has had significant upgrades.
 
Superficially, the games are pretty much the same. Pick one of 3 starters (Fire, Water, Grass), go through the region catching Pokemon, fighting gym leaders, stopping an evil group, face off against the leader of said group, then going to the Elite Four.

Pokemon games aren't about the story, but about the battling metagame that follows. You can breeze through story in few hours, and the point is only to get to the part after - battling. And this part of the game has changed significantly with each new generation.

Like I said, it's superficial. Someone does have to schlepp through the story to get to the metagame, though.

Actually, Pokemon games for me ARE the story, the collecting, taking in the sights and sounds, all of that. I usually just power through the game with one Pokemon cause I enjoy the rest of the stuff more.
 
Pokémon Sunday has just finished airing in Japan and in the preview for next weeks episode, it shows Junichi Masuda revealling something. This corresponds with his blog post yesterday saying he'll be on to reveal about the new games. The episode of Pokémon Sunday is to feature the cast trying to work out whom the key character in the upcoming movie is. It is unknown if the reveal is for that or for the brand new games announced yesterday. We'll bring more on this as it comes

Okay, maybe that´s just me, but significant in my book is:

RE3 -> RE4
Alttp -> OoT
FF -> ME

And so on.
There ARE changes, but to 95% of all Pokemon-players it is NOT significant. Anyway, Im trying to keep my expectations low. Give me diagonal walking, less stiff feeling battles (be it be 3D-animation, 2D-animation or whatever idea they might come up with) and let me customize my trainer-avatar. Oh, and just maybe use higher quality music, the TV-serie´s and movies´ soundtrack is so beautiful.

Barring towns which are already crowded, a road's longest width is the width of the screen. The areas are so linear and straightforward that it's stupid and unnecessary.

I never liked diagonal walking in top-down view anyway. It never feels right.

So say I'm trying to catch a roaming legendary and my team is only a couple tanks and catchers, you want me to be able to deal with my rival in this situation? My pro team is rarely fully on me when I'm utility traveling.

No, I get him I think. But I'd be fine with that transition... It seems like he wants more of a Mario 64 -> Mario Galaxy transition. I love the sounds used in the DS and GBA Pokemon. 8(

It doesn't feel right in Zelda either, but it's necessary in that game. It's clearly not necessary in Pokemon.
