To be honest, I wouldn't actually mind if they reused sprites, if they were animated. Actually, I sometimes wonder how Game Freak's small team does all 493 (now maybe something like 550) sprites, plus their animations, all within a year or so.

. . . I don't see the mystery. :/

Yep the fanart really helps give them character. The fanart made the male character be my fave trainer.

If you've read any recent interviews, you'd know that they're NEVER going to reveal his name on the show because it isn't important. That name probably isn't even canon, just something ABC or someone came up so they could call him something.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that was just a mistake on Hulu's part. People on the web have been calling him that for a while now and some dude at Hulu must have assumed that was his name. I like the fact that he doesn't have a name though.
