Who the fuck takes a selfie in front of a burning house.

Unprofessional and not something you should be doing. It's part of your job to serve and protect. If you're in forces like these just for brownie points or karma you're in them for the wrong reasons.

However this can be handled locally and internally and the officers disciplined and made to know not to do this again. A witch hunt on the internet isn't exactly needed. Nor are these individuals needed thrown under the bus for transgressions caused by others in the same line of work.

This is what actually matters outside of being unprofessional

Neighbor Emma Zaccarini told NBC New York that she does not believe the officers should be punished, because they helped her get out of her home. The 86-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair lives next door to the house that caught fire.

It was definitely unprofessional and there should be punishment. Yes, they did their job, but there is no reason for this kind of action. You're a professional, act accordingly.
Yep, if you're in uniform and/or on duty, you should be held to a higher standard. Other PDs being pieces of shit about worse things doesn't matter. The police isn't a monolithic hivemind. That said, I doubt there would be this much of a backlash if there wasn't video evidence of the incident publicized.

It was an unprofessional thing to do. Not hating on the officers, but I see why they might get reprimanded. They represent the police department and that was unprofessional and a bit weird. I can't imagine many of you would take selfies at your workplace where your boss could see you. Imagine being the homeowner and seeing this. It's not that you expect them to do anything, its just tasteless and again unprofessional. And the old lady wasn't the homeowner people. We could at least write this off as a victory selfie. This just comes off as a trainee who's finally "getting some action" and sharing it on social media.

Probably the first cop article on GAF that doesn't cause my blood to boil.

They helped an 86-year-old woman out of her home and had no protective gear and, you know, aren't firemen. What else were they supposed to do? (Yes, I know: not take a selfie in front of a burning building.)

I agree with this.

They couldn't really do anything but wait around for the firemen.

I can see why they should be getting reprimanded. They did well in rescuing the neighbor and it's not like they can shoot at the fire.

But it's not a professional look, how do you think the homeowner would feel if they saw that?

Imagine if you were in a deadly car crash and you had one of the cops taking a picture with your car.

Isn't a huge deal to me. People take photos of fires. I know there will be reasons and whatever. But eh

Some of you say imagine if your the home owner. Well, what they do doesn't change it, might even join them.. Just doesn't matter.

Saying it's unprofessional and dating it's your job to serve and protect, well the photo isn't really either. They could be standing there not taking a photo and doing nothing but it's the same basic thing overall.

It's not professional, but some of you should seek help for anger issues.

Enzom? You mean enzom yea?

He is being confrontational due to the many posts hand-waiving it away, but I am not getting angry vibes from his wording, many of you on here are just too sensitive to his approach in my view.

Those excusing the behavior of the cops are part of the reason the standards of policing are so low, having no understanding of what a professional demeanor is. They are human, but they are humans who are supposedly trained to use their brain a little more than average citizens on public appearance and behavior. They are public servants after all, and the day people stop glorifying them would be the day we are able to advance their training and standards more than it is now.

The optics of it are bad. Not everyone is going to read into the story, they'll see the photo and judge them poorly based on that alone, particularly in the era of 'fake news, post-truth' etc.

Poor judgement imo.

Highly unprofessional and poor judgement. We should be expecting much better out of them.

Props for helping out the neighbor, but the absolute last thing they should be doing is taking selfies.

Not cool. You can even see one smirking/smiling. Its all good that you saved someone, but don't just stand there looking smug for a photo. Jesus Christ, get back in your car, call for help and stay put.

I hope they get fired.

That's disrespectful, but I wouldn't call them names for it. A slap on the wrist, maybe. But nothing more.

Lmao. Exactly. These cops should have waited for a pro to show them how it's done.

It's not like they drew their guns and started shooting the house for no reason. There was nothing to do. Just let them screw around for a few minutes.

Some people in here really need to control their anger.

Some of you would explode in a seething rage if you heard what medical personnel sometimes say when someone dies. Or mortuary employees.

These cops saved a life, their duties were done as they were not equipped to help any further. Was it unprofessional? Yes. Does it deserve punishment? A slap on the wrist, at the most.

Unfortunate and it's a reminder that maybe police are not compassionate. They are on the job and because it can be misinterpreted, it looks bad.

But i rather police continue to be honest about not caring or even considering what things may look like. These are the same people who get huffy and upset about every perceived slight against them.

The fop will usually jump down someone's throat of they have not bowed sufficiently. Sell a t-shirt? Rawr! Take a selfie when someone's house is being destroyed? Not a peep. It's one sided with police and expectations of normal behavior. Even their defenders chafe at the constant negative spotlight and take up the fight over behavior that's juvenile to fight back against perceived attacks.

I wanted to comment on this earlier but didn't get a chance due to being pressed for time.

Overall this seems like a non-issue. It may look bad but there seems to be a little bit more to the story that many news services are leaving out. The home is apparently by an NYPD sargeant so these men may likely have known the owner and were taking pictures for the sake of it. The owner himself says he even isn't bothered by it and is speaking out on their behalf.

Honestly, it seems like the only people upset about this are those who were unaffected by the events altogether. The owner doesn't care, the neighbor they rescued doesn't care, etc. So while it looks bad from an outside perspective, it seems a little overblown.

But the very people who lost their home told NBC 4 New York they're a law enforcement family and don't think the officers did anything wrong.

The homeowner, an NYPD sergeant, told NBC 4 New York Friday, "I'm not taking any offense. I'm not offended at all by this."

Next-door neighbor Emma Zaccarini added that the picture doesn't tell the whole story. The 86-year-old woman in a wheelchair said that moments before the selfie, the two officers helped her escape her home next to the one on fire.

Asked if she thought they should be punished, she responded, "For what? For doing their job? For being kind to an old lady?"

And if someone recorded what they said and it got out, they'd get in trouble. You wouldn't believe the things businesses say about their customers and suppliers, but if it got out they'd get fucked.

So this isn't an excuse.

It deserves some punishment, but nothing crazy.

Zero percent chance they get fired for this. A bit unprofessional and strange, but not worth losing your job over.

And jesus christ, some of you guys need to relax. Can't imagine dealing with such abrasive people irl.

They saved a life. That should be the story, not this shit.
They could crack open a champaign bottle and pop some party streamers in front of that house for all I care
Umm they knocked on the neighbors door and told her she should probably leave her house. omg heroes.

Theyre pieces of shit for the same reason teenagers taking selfies at funerals are peices of shit. Actually, even more so.

I got arrested at a DUI checkpoint for driving on a suspended license, and I had a gang of empty bottles in my trunk that I meant to throw out, and all the officers took the empty bottles out and lined them all on top of my car from the trunk to the roof to the hood, and they all took turns making various poses and taking pictures. LOL

Joke post right?

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Ite pretty shitty thing to but, not as big of a deal as some peopl3 think it is. I mean everyone was saved and plus police cwnt go inside th3 burning house.

Joke post right?

Likely not. When I got my first DUI in Chicago about a decade back, two Cook County sheriffs took a pic with me during booking because I was a dead ringer for Finch from American Pie at the time. It was like a fake celebrity photo, lol.

Cops are people, they do normal people things sometimes while on duty. Sadly for these fellas, it got caught on tape. Hopefully they exit this relatively unscathed, maybe desk duty for a month or something.

good credit (by proxy)
It's pretty inconsiderate to the homeowner, but its not a HUGE deal if there was nothing else they could do.

Eh, with the above story of the home owner being an NYPD sergeant, and them having rescued the elder neighbor from her house, what's there to be mad about? How many times do you get a chance to take a selfie in front of a burning house that has everyone secured?

If they had taken the photo prior to doing any of their duties, that would be an issue. Like, if they took a selfie while grandma was flailing out the window in the background, there might be an issue.

At the end of the day its a little tasteless IMO. Seeing someone using this oppertunity to snap a selfie for lulz while my whole life is up in flames behind them might irk me some but thats all this is to me is 2 guys being assholes. They should still be recognized for any good deeds they done during this. I dont think its asking too much to expect a little more professionalism/respect in a situation like this.
