I think if you're approaching this election with the standard election thinking it's a mistake. This is the ultimate brand election and Donald Trump is the best brand marketer around right now. I don't see the voter who is on the fence about Trump/Hillary and Kaine somehow is the decisive factor in a way that Pence doesn't cancel out.

The election is going to be about emotions and not about reason. The VP not being important overall is exactly why you shouldn't be playing safe with it. Use it to create an emotional narrative that will get traction in social media (driven by young people), 'my ticket is multicultural and yours isn't'. All older white people is not a great look in 2016.
A VP is like being legally deposed. You can't win a case against you in a deposition, only lose it by making the wrong statement/choice.

Also, people on the fence aren't coming over for Warren or Booker. People on the fence are moderates. They want to feel safe and stable. Kaine is safe and stable. The swing voters left are white middle class Americans. Sherrod Brown would be the best pick but would give the GOP a senator for free.

Also, Trump is good at throwing red meat to an already rabid fringe. He lacks the true charisma needed to rally a majority. He is not Barack Obama. He isn't Bill Clinton or Ronald Reagan. He is Goldwater in an even more polarized time. He is Lee Atwater (who's widow compared the two just today). He pounds on wedge issues and false narratives. That only gets you so far. Trump shows no ability to do that and the public record blocks him from now trying to back into that.

Sanders playing a smart game on Twitter, referring to how his supporters reject whatever Trump is talking about in his speech. He's actively trying to get them involved in the Democratic campaign (of which he is now a part of after his endorsement and speech on Monday) and I hope to see more of that on the campaign trail.

It's honestly not just the right thing to do, but it is the best political move to make. If he becomes an energetic surrogate for Clinton, he'll not only further his progressive clout in the Senate, but he can legitimately help bring about his progressive revolution down ballot.

Good job Bernie!

Like, I have been joking about Hitler and stuff but as a once former student of WWII, Trump is far more Mussolini than Hitler. Which is still fucking terrifying.

And that is something most of PoliGAF would be fine with!

He also becomes one of the ten or twenty most powerful politicians as hell be chairman of the senate budget committee and will have a strong liberal coalition looking to rally behind him.

He could actually make a substantial legislative impact for the first time in his career.

Shockingly similar stances and rhetoric, yes.

I agree totally, but was reminded of this:

Interestingly he could end up making more of an impact having run and lost than had he won with an intransigent house/senate

I'm squished to the front, floor managers aren't letting ANYONE move in the aisles. Hearing that they are preventing walk out. #RNCinCLE

Probably going to go down as one of the worst speeches by a GOP nominee in sometime, mainly due to delivery, pace, and circular reasoning.

I’ve heard this sort of speech a lot in the last 15 years and trust me, it doesn’t sound any better in Russian.
