In letter to Trump, Democrats accuse White House of intentionally withholding information

Democratic senators are accusing the administration of instructing federal agencies to ”refuse requests for information from Democratic members of Congress," according to a letter being sent to the White House on Wednesday and obtained by The Washington Post. Such a move ”would be a significant departure from the practices of past Administrations and seriously inhibit Congress's ability to fulfill its legislative and oversight duties."

As for John Oliver, I really do enjoy Last Week Tonight, but I do appreciate the breaks the show takes - the shouting at fake people isn't as funny as he thinks it is, and the humour outside of that schtick doesn't always hit its mark.

4thed on Last Week Tonight. I think John does a terrific job of capturing the absurdity of the Trump White House. Besides that, he does an equally amazing job of bringing awareness to corrupt institutions and programs. The one about dialysis had me seething with rage at the stupid manchild CEO of Davita.

I also love his humor but totally understand if others dont get it.

Probably Stewart deciding to do something different.

It reads to me like they can't get the animation done & sent out quick enough to be topical--ala South Park. Really interesting since Stewart created an animation studio for this project.

"He's establishing an animation studio because he wants to get material out multiple times a day," he said. "And the idea is it will be an animated parody of a cable news network, with kind of an Onion-like portal."

Multiple times a day seems like way, way too much for a smaller company.

I like the deep dives on obscure topics in last week tonight and I think Oliver can be funny. But he doesn't approach prime Daily Show. Oliver does great with Trump and the modern GOP but that's a comedian's gold mine. Stewart was able to skewer them when the GOP was still somewhat sane

It was never really made clear if what short of animation they were targeting. Even digital would be tough to draft up, I assume. The few docs I've seen on South Park's process makes it look like they work all day & night when the season is running.

I still can't believe the incredible stupidity of Gowdy's "Campaigns talking to Russia is totally normal" comment. Blatantly corrupt.

I'm going to consciously decide to be happy about this, and not focus on how much worse the next candidate floated for the job will probably be.

Lieberman was a passing clever pick for Trump. Not sure if there's anyone who would be such an easy "non-partisan" vote for Republicans and still give Democrats heartburn.

I don't see how it could possibly be better. It's pretty much the same bill, only worse.

It's the same bill as last time + exploding the cost of people with pre-existing conditions. There were no "improvements" made to cover more people.

When you take away EHB it should technically make insurance cheaper for healthy people that's why. It would be more expensive for people with pre-existing conditions.

And there are more healthy people compared to sick people.

Any hypothetical piddly cost savings is not going to be the headline when the report also says 25 million people will be without insurance. There were no changes to that part of the bill so that number will only go up from last time.

Even if that number magically went down to "only" 15 million it would still be a disastrous headline

Depends on the actual headline. Fox News could easily manipulate that result.

They're a bit busy right now, and also their ratings dip has been partially due to them dodging negative stories that even their viewers want to know about. The internet age of fake news also means old people on facebook aren't 100% insulated.

Jon Stewart on his worst day >>>>>>> John Oliver on his best

The "yelling at fake people" stuff he does is the worst. I don't mind the show itself, but the man is intolerable. Everyone has their moments, but much of Stewart's humor was subtle and smart. Oliver's is like getting beaten with a bag of oranges. In case you didn't get the joke, he's going to yell and swear immediately after so you have another chance. Oliver is like the kid in high school who had some decent humor but would almost always ruin the moment by following it with something rude and obnoxious. I feel like people have fallen under the "Oh it's on HBO so it must be smart!" mindset with his style of humor.
Couldn't agree more. Also, Colbert > Oliver
Oliver's show would improve tenfold if he dropped his "humor".

There's a brief history of the FBI up at Vox by a guy who did write a whole book on it.

The roots of the FBI as an organization stretch back to the Reconstruction period, when the Secret Service moved temporarily over from the Treasury Department to the Justice Department in 1871, in order to combat the Ku Klux Klan. The director of this fleeting FBI precursor, Hiram Whitley, did a fine job. In South Carolina alone in 1872, there were 1,207 arrests, 96 prosecutions, and convictions of 86 Klansmen who went to prison.

But the white South loathed Whitley. His enemies in Washington finally forced him to resign in 1874, on the pretext that he’d committed financial irregularities. The Secret Service went back to Treasury, and for the remainder of the century, the White House had to rely on ad hoc arrangements for federal law enforcement.
In 1933, a group of Southern Democratic senators who were important to the political plans of the newly elected president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, decided they wanted to remove Hoover; once again, the KKK was a factor. Hoover had presided over a new effort to curb the power of the white terrorist group, which the Southerners resented. As part of a complex deal between the incoming administration and Hoover’s congressional opponents, Hoover remained in office but appointed 100 new agents — white, male, and almost all from the South, an episode that would help explain the FBI’s subsequent sluggishness in enforcing civil rights.
President Bill Clinton in 1993 moved more aggressively to dismiss an FBI director who used FBI resources for personal gain. William Sessions’s abuses were more serious. He had been President Ronald Reagan’s selection in 1987 and had another four years to go under the tenure rule. The firing has often been mentioned during debate over James Comey’s dismissal, but it is not really an instructive comparison. Sessions had used FBI cars and planes to visit his daughter, and even had firewood transported to his house. Few fought hard for his retention, perhaps because he’d lost the support of some agents over his aggressive efforts to increase the numbers of women and members of minority groups in the bureau.
It seems to be a position that curses the person occupying it.

Last Week Tonight and Full Frontal are both well written shows, but the person-screaming-at-you-on-TV shtick is getting exhausting. I would not be able to stomach either of these shows if they were broadcast daily.

I would really like to be able to hold onto the FBI as a proud American institution but there's just too much shittiness that comes with being essentially federal police. As is I have to just enjoy two organizations I dislike (to differing degrees, to be fair) going at each other's throats

A bit off topic, but whenever I see the Inhumass thread (supposed to be Inhumans) pop up in the OT, I briefly wonder if it's supposed to be some Huma Abedin anal porn parody.

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled PoliGAF.

Trump gave the Pope a boxed set of MLK writings. The pope gave Trump a copy of his 2015 letter on climate change. Dead.

Also, Kim Dotcom tried to hack into Seth Rich's gmail account THIS WEEK

https://www.washingtonpost.com/amph...a640c4-3ff3-11e7-adba-394ee67a7582_story.html

When Seth Rich's Gmail account received an alert this week from Mega.com, attempting to start a new account on a website created by the New Zealand-based Internet businessman and convicted hacker Kim Dotcom, his family knew that something was off.

Over seven frenzied days, Dotcom had become a leading purveyor of the theory that Rich, a staffer at the Democratic National Committee who was shot dead near his home in Northeast Washington last summer, had supplied DNC documents to WikiLeaks and was killed as a result. Multiple security analysts and an FBI investigation have tied the release to hackers with ties to Russia. D.C. police have said repeatedly that they think Rich was slain in a random robbery attempt.

Can someone tell me what it means when someone gets primaried or whatever it's called?

They have a challenger for their seat. In a lot of cases, people are never challenged and just keep being the only option for that party for that seat. But sometimes someone from the same party comes along and says fuck it and challenges the incumbent. They usually fail, but sometimes it works, like in the case of Eric Cantor.

Frum is knowingly lying about this

I mean I love shitting on trump but he's likely referring to two subs where this information (they're on western pacific deployment) is public knowledge

USS Cheyenne

http://www.kgwn.tv/content/news/Che...Sasebo-Japan-during-deployment-421230273.html

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Cheyenne's namesake ship, the USS Cheyenne, recently visited Sasebo, Japan during deployment.

The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Cheyenne (SSN 773) arrived at Fleet Activities Sasebo, May 2, for a visit as part of its Indo-Asia-Pacific deployment.

The visit strengthens the already positive alliance between the U.S. and Japan through the crew's interaction with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. It also demonstrates the U.S. Navy's commitment to regional stability and maritime security in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.

USS Michigan

http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/24/politics/uss-michigan-nuclear-sub-south-korea/

Washington (CNN)The USS Michigan -- a guided-missile submarine -- arrived in South Korea for what a US defense official described as a show of force amid tensions between the US and North Korea.

The US Navy sub arrived in the port city of Busan, South Korea, on the same day that North Korea celebrates the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army.

Publicly the US Naval Forces Korea called the sub's visit to the region "routine" and said the scheduled port call was a chance to highlight the alliance between the US and South Korean navies, but quietly officials told CNN that the timing is not a coincidence.

While the USS Michigan is not expected to take part in the joint exercises, its presence in the region is meant to send a strong message to Pyongyang.

The internal election of who presents the party is done by the members of that party in the region. That election is called a primary. Normally, if you are an incumbent (already have that position and are trying to win it again) you have no real opposition on them except for the crazy people. Getting primaried is being challenged by someone with a shot of winning that election and thus not letting you get to the real election.

Agreed on the John Oliver stuff, although his self-depricating and/or Britishisms *are* legitimately funny. He just yells more often.

I like the show a lot, but not for the humor.

Sam Bee, OTOH, I generally find funny.

I think that Sam Bee is really the true spiritual successor to John Stewart and should have gotten the Daily Show instead of Noah.

Trevor Noah just doesn't have that fire she does because he's somewhat detached from what's currently happening. He doesn't have the righteous fury you can feel coming from Bee. Oliver has a little of this but again, it just feels more real from Full Frontal.
