MITT ROMNEY’S annual retreat -- the E2 Summit -- will be June 8-10 at the Stein Eriksen Lodge in Park City. On the docket this year: Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former CIA Director Mike Morell and Microsoft Chairman John Thompson. GET YOUR MONEY’S WORTH!: There will be “enthusiast sessions” like trap shooting with Paul Ryan, pilates with Ann Romney and early-morning hikes with Mitt Romney.

Interesting group of people there.

Trump doesn't say "enjoy". It's very obvious that a staffer wrote the tweet to try to help Trump look self-aware.

Like, this is the same Trump that literally made devin Nunez look up classified documents to try to prove his dumb tweets that Obama wire tapped him. This is the same Trump that STILL won't let go of the inauguration crowds. I'm supposed to believe that Trump is happy about fucking up his attempt to tweet-rant about the press yet again?

He has said it plenty of times, each time there was a TV interview of him or so finished with "Enjoy!", even in the campaign.

Anyway, who fucking cares? The whole thing is stupid as hell. Trump is really the president this era of eternal search of entertainment deserves.

It's about to be lit

Absolutely packed house to see Sen. @BillCassidy - town hall room is at 220 person capacity with lots more folks in line outside

Tonight's Tucker Carlson dose from passing by my parent's TV:

- Portland stabber wasn't a Trump supporter
- He actually hated Christians too
- He went to Trump rallies to pick fights with Trump supporters
- He was a Jill Stein and Bernie Sanders supporter
- He was mad at Hillary for not helping refugees

... ended with: "...but the liberal media won't tell you that!"

The right have been been running any way they can in order to try to disavow this guy or distract from him. Never mind that he wants the same things they do.

It was terrible. Worse than nothing at all because all she was was a pr face for the paper and trying to conceal it. The NYtimes response to their article on the Manchester attack was pathetic and cowardly, and made me unsubscribe from them. So much for the 'paper of record'.
The public editor at least had some condemnatory pieces following the NYT's role in helping the Bush administration push the Iraq War via Curveball, aluminum tubes, and the editorial page.

Distressing for the administration, since Trump flipped this state red last year. Via The Hill:

About six in 10 likely Michigan voters, 61 percent, gave Trump a negative job rating, according to the EPIC-MRA poll reported by the Detroit Free Press. That's up 5 points from a survey taken in February.

Just 12 percent of respondents gave the president a positive job rating, down from 18 percent in the February poll.

...The poll of 600 likely Michigan voters [kind of low] was conducted May 20-24 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points [kind of high].

Certainly the previous public editor was fantastic. Less PR, and more actually engaging with the issues that caused readers to write in. At one stage - in some conversation or another - I was actively arguing for larger videogames sites to have a public editor position in order to engage with low-knowledge, irritated readers instead of them just spamming the comments sections about whatever thing they were angry about at the time.

But, yeah, Liz Spayd, plus the NYT's editorial stances during the 2016 campaign, cocked it up.

The right seems to be overplaying this griffin thing to milk it as much as possible. If people don't care that trump boasts about sexual assault and all the other shit personally wrong with him, they shouldn't care about griffin. I sure as hell don't. But it's their chance to try to shift the story from things that matter so they pounce on it. They don't care. It's just swill for their followers to drink and become more intoxicated with their own bullshit.

Michigan is probably the easiest flip in 2020, it's the closest state Trump won.

That disapproval is higher than the national average, no?
By about six points yeah.

Lot of undecideds too which makes that spread (12-61, -49 favorability) dreadful. Rust belt is going to turn hard on Trump, mark my words.

Honestly I see the right's focus on Kathy Griffin backfiring because it completely undermines their arguments against political correctness and because the vast majority of people on both sides don't actually give a shit about what Kathy did.

I get why Kathy had to apologize (any kind of death threat to a POTUS or candidate is a no-no), but liberals and progressives should just keep their political correctness within the realms of legal while still sticking with the uncomfortable.

Every time the right gets outraged over liberals and progressives being politically incorrect is a win.

strategery can't compete

What really elevates this above strategery is that the latter was actually coined by Will Ferrell on an SNL debate sketch, whereas this is actually just Trump being Trump.

Even keeping in mind how poorly Michigan polls have fared recently, those are awful numbers for Trump.

That disapproval is higher than the national average, no?

Yes. His national disapprovals have generally been hovering around the mid 50s.

I still say that the easiest flips are Florida and Pennsylvania. Trump only won those two states because he got record high white rural turnout in those states.

Also, the fact that so many respondents are undecided tells me that a lot of Michigan Trump voters KNOW Trump is fucking up but are ashamed to admit it.

The silver lining of 2016 is we don't have to move the needle that much to win back the presidency. Those three and Wisconsin give us over 300 EVs. Every state moving to the left by four points gives us AZ and NC as well, and almost wins us GA.

True, the hypocrisy is palatable. Unless Griffin did something illegal, and from what I understand it wasn't...

Besides, I've almost never seen a right winger make exceptions for freedom of speech, I get the impression they think all speech should be free regardless of content. It's just all wrong. I think our education system failed hard in the civics department.

You don't flip PA without it also flipping WI and MI. Those 3 should be the easiest to flip.

There's no scenario where WI and MI flip but PA stays red. I remember on election night playing with the map "Where the path" once she lost PA. I knew it was over once that happened knowing FL and NC were gone.

Florida is not easy to flip. PA, MI, WI all significantly easier to flip than Florida. The state is already so politically calcified and polarized.

WI/MI and AZ + ME-2 or NE-2 also gets you to 270 if you lost PA but narrowly held onto WI and MI. I think AZ is more likely to be blue in 2020 than NC tbh.

May contain jokes =>
Trump's eventual response to the covfefe tweet is actually funny, and a sobering reminder of what it might be like if he actually approached anything like a normal person rather than being a complete thin-skinned lizard baby about everything.

You'll pry Kathy Griffin's right to appear on TV out of our cold dead hands, said no one on the left in the country ever

Also Sean Hannity is trying to get advertisers to pull out of Rachel Maddow's show lol

They are not good at this

Flipping them will have little to do with Trump's approval ratings and everything to do with who the Dem's put forward, not being Hillary is the biggest advantage though.

Honestly, Trump's approvals are probably the single biggest factor in whether those states will flip back. Not that the candidate doesn't matter (Obama was a strong candidate for those states and Clinton was weak) but if Trump's still sitting at sub-40 approval on Election Day the Dems would be in position to win WI+MI+PA by running a ham sandwich. Where the candidate matters most is in a scenario where Trump's net approvals are about even or slightly negative.

Oh, there is absolutely precedent for interpreting what Kathy did as illegal. That's why she apologized.

Trump literally only won Florida because he got the rural white voters turning out in unprecedented numbers in that state.

What does anyone realistically expect people to do with the Kathy Griffin bit. Her agent got paid, focus on the actual issues of substance. Healthcare is still on the table, Paris Climate, Birth Control.

Pissing around worried about some higher profile idiot pulling some publicity stunt doesn't help anyone. Griffin isn't going to shift public perception beyond a day or two unless you're one of those nuts who thought she needed to be strung up for the picture. Get your shit right.

The GOP is now attacking Morning Joe.

Also, this exchange was pretty great-
@SeanMcElwee

someone should write up america's devastating affordable housing crisis the way you would if it was happening in a socialist country
@mattyglesias 9 minutes ago (replying to Sean)

Central planning of where and in what quantity houses can be built has failed and is creating systematic shortages.

I was going to say that too, but figured the voter ID laws in WI might be bad enough to insulate the state from whatever Dem-friendly demographic trends are happening in PA and MI in an election year.

What precedence? The exception to free speech protection only covers calls to imminent action. If what she did did not call for imminent acts of violence, first amendment usually wins. Unless I am missing something in the content.
