I genuinely don't understand the GOP's political calculus today. How does passing a bill that won't get considered in the Senate and is enormously unpopular help them? Is it JUST about getting a "win" to energize their base, and they assume everyone will forget about this come 2018?

I don't see many conservative sites/programs really talking highly of this bill whereas the left is PISSED AS FUCK. I think for the GOP its just TAXCUTS!!!!!!!!!!! and fuck everything else.

The theory is that they can't go to 2018 saying "yeah you elected President Trump and we control both houses of Congress but we still can't repeal Obamacare."

They would either have to be totally incompetent or shameless liars. In fact they are both, but they'd like to keep that quiet.

So they have to do SOMETHING. The problem is that the thing they promised is impossible.

They have no good choices. Somebody decided that passing something bad was better than not passing anything. Not sure this will turn out to be correct.
Josh Marshall has that bitch-slap theory of politics among conservatives, that strength breeds strength and weakness reinforces weakness. Doing something for the sake of doing something (even something seemingly self-destructive) would seem to conform with that mindset.

seems to conform to that analysis.

Rich people are the primary reason this bill passed. You can scream racism and sexism because of course those things helped these people get elected but it's the richest of fucks who wanted this bill so bad so they could get a tax cut. A bill that will be murderous to so many people.

Yet you want to tell me there's no class war.

One person did and everyone else disagreed but hey you got to once again talk down to those concerned about the impact of bigotry by calling it "screaming" racism/sexism...

It's all connected. The rich use sexism and racism as weapons to get what they want. That's what I meant. Get out of here with this "downplaying" shit.

I don't disagree but I also think that it would be a mistake to think that sexism and racism are economically derived, modalities of capitalist power. They often operate orthogonally to it and jesus christ I need to stop reading Foucault at 1am

I know I'm late, but I'm happy to see Clinton get into raising for Grassroots. If there's one thing I don't think anyone can deny it's that she's great at fundraising

I know it's way too early for 2020. I know. Many more pressing and practical things at the moment.

But if Chris Murphy wants to walk into Mordor, he'll have my sword.

Saying there's no class war is insane in my opinion, but statements like "you can scream racism and sexism" makes me think I'm listening to Rush Limbaugh.

Do....Do you mean butt stuff? I mean it's cool if you do, just, I'm just curious is all.

Corey taking an L.

President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski announced Thursday that he will leave the lobbying and consulting firm he co-founded, amid accusations that he offered international clients access to President Donald Trump and key members of his administration.

I think quite a lot (most?) rich people that look down on poor people have it rooted in racism. Poor = black to them.

I was actually curious about this a few years ago so I asked my relatives to describe a poor white person. They mostly described people that looked like Eminem (who looks really "urban" to them). Never mind that we are literally poor white people and my dad sitting in the goddamned room is a broke redneck with a mullet, warrants for his arrest, and prison tattoos. Nope, that picture of poor white people just didn't come to mind. Gotta go for the guy with baggy pants who raps.

Gotta admit, Pod Save America today did the trick and got me from being cautiously worried and somewhat confused to the GOP strategy, and now I'm definitely expecting the worst. Dan seems convinced McConnell can, and will, do whatever it takes to ram something through.

This is pretty much the only person who mentions race so overtly, everybody else seems several shades of, "I just didn't like Hillary", which, well, we ain't running her again, so we're starting with a leg up, already.

Basically, Trump walked into the eye of the perfect storm. Racial unrest, big increase in healthcare premiums, big changes to the economy, conspiracy theories, and the second least-liked politician in modern political history. Things were going to swing Repub, and Trump was lucky enough to be that Repub. I'm fairly convinced Hillary could have beaten only Cruz and Bush.

Rubio/Kasich would have gotten 340+ electoral votes.

Eh it's kinda 50/50.

But you ARE right that a lot of Trump/Obama voters still like Obama, but they had been convinced that Hillary was basically the devil.

Haha what the fuck?

As outrageous as that is, I still love some of the other quotes more because even the WPost editorial staff felt they had to mention again inline that these people voted for Trump:

"They made Trump, I think, — I, well, I shouldn't say it was the media's fault, it was pretty much his mouth's fault — but he made himself look like a very mean, cruel person that just was very racist. And I thought he would, everyone was going to vote for Hillary because of that.”

Translation: I thought my vote didn't matter. (but even that still doesn't make this make sense)

“I think they all lie, but Trump was more — is more obvious.”

Translation: At least I know he's evil.

“There were quite a few opportunities for him to stand up to defend things, and all he did was just roll over and show his belly every time.”

Translation: But Clinton is a woman.

“Oh, you know, Obama is like a very entertaining speaker. Like he's captivating, and but he, yeah, he just, he tries to appease everybody.”

Translation: I'm tired of the snowflakes, only MY problems matter.

“Well, on top of that, she had an earwig in, and they were feeding her the answers.” (This was a conspiracy theory pushed by the Drudge Report and others. A woman on the panel seemed to agree, responding: “Right, well, that's what I'm saying.")

Translation: I'm a fucking nutter.

On Australian healthcare. It is an underlying public system with an auxiliary private insurance system.

It looks like this.

There are depending on where you go what would be the equivalent of I guess copays for Medicare provided services. E.g. GPs that "bulk bill" will charge you nothing.

I'm not sure this is what people envisage in the socialist utopia.

I really think the effect of "I watched him on tv for a decade, he seemed like a nice guy, and he's pretty funny and entertaining, and I just REALLY don't like Hillary" has been underestimated amidst all the talk of everything else that went down.

Reading through those quotes, like half of them seem to have voted for him because "fuck it". This is horrendously stupid, but these are votes that can be won back.

Honestly, reading that article I couldn't help but think "Some of these voters are so easy to win back we barely have to do anything different besides not run Hillary or Warren."

Exactly. You get a charismatic New Blood democrat to run that is too new to find dirt on, give them an experienced old, charming white guy as the VP on the ticket, and you now got yourself another Obama/Biden stew cooking.

Harris/Franken 2020

Rubio would have gone on Fallon with stylish, vaguely effeminate shoes or boots every other week, and Kasich would have done an eating contest on Conan or Kimmel or some shit. Talk about normalizing!

I think it was a play for 2018. Trump kind of previewed it in his tweet the other days when he said they need to elect more republicans to the senate in 2018 to repeal Obamacare.

They know it's dead in the senate and that's fine. If they let healthcare die without passing the House then all those House members go back into elections with no real excuse as to why they didn't repeal Obamacare even though they said they would. Now, by voting this through and sending it to the senate they can go back and say "Hey we tried!" The bill ends in the Senate and Trump can start screaming at his enemy: Schumer and the Democrats in the senate. Trump and republicans largely work best with an enemy. Now they can say the dirty Democrats blocked it, so go vote Republican so we can do something!

Even if this goes nowhere it puts House Republicans back in the same position they were in before with countless obamacare repeals that went nowhere and they knew it'd go nowhere.

Note: I don't think this is Trump doing 12 dimensional chess. I think this is house and republican strategists as a whole possibly.

The problem with Kamala running is that there isn't anyone who enjoys working with Kamala and her campaign will be a Hillary 08 disaster ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Counting on the President's party gaining seats in midterms? That's a bold strategy, Cotton.

Depends on if she can sell herself as a Hopey Changey gal, and how much opposition she gets from the Left.

I know it's early, but I am into fantasy rosters for who people think will run that will have a shot. Gabbard fucking decapitated herself a few weeks ago, so my early favorite (in terms of who I thought might have mainstream appeal) is out. I've got my money on Harris, now. I don't think people will go for Franken, Tim Kaine is a walking melatonin pill, Warren's appeal will be too narrow by then, and Bernie is going to continue to be Bernie.

The House GOP is batshit insane, and I think many (if not most) of them genuinely care more about taking healthcare away from poor people and cutting taxes for the rich, than saving their own seat.

If the AHCA goes into law, mark my words, there will be more Republicans working as Barista's than in the Federal Government by probably 2022.

They're not counting on jack shit. They were never counting on gaining seats when they voted to repeal Obamacare the first billion times. They're counting on keeping their own seats. They were put there to try and repeal Obamacare. They tried. They can blame the dems now and wait it out. Without passing anything in the house, however, only they would have the blame. They could get hit from the right.

Hah, Robert Costa just said exactly what I was talking about on twitter, too:

@costareports
Another rarely uttered truth, per some top Rs: getting bill out of the House was politically necessary. Look competent & united because... the bill is out of House, Rs believe they can perhaps blame Sen Ds for any further stall. Tell base they've acted, rally for 2018
