Politics Forum....?

Not going to lie I went in there sometimes.

Don't know that I'll miss it though.

Just as many times as I went in there to vent about something I was just immediately repulsed and left the site.

I don't really play video games much anymore so I'm not sure I'll migrate more to gaming.

Then why are you worried about how a message board 'looks'?
Because I'd rather not be associated with a board that gives a platform to hate speech, white supremacy, and baseless conspiracy theories.
Like if you tell someone you hang out at Stormfront, then at least you're letting that person know you're a colossal asshole.

I still pretty new to Gaf so I couldn't make an informed comment as such.
However, I do think it's a shame it's gone.
A lot of people on here did discuss things respectfully and their ideals resonated with my own.
Probably have to settle for pineapple on pizza debates now lol

What about white hatred, you ok with that because you didn't mention it in your list of things you don't want to be associated with.

I don't favor it, but the point is that there's little ability to avoid a situation now where games themselves are increasingly politicized, but somehow we'll have a "gaming forum" which has to pretend to ignore that and just consume, and go along for the ride uncritically. That isn't exactly sustainable.
It's up to the mods to demarcate but there are pretty clear cases of either disingenuous thread hijacking and/or derailing. In the Weeds podcast I mentioned there was actually a mention of games media click bait (something about Knuckles being improperly racially coded or whatever) and (depending on how it's framed) posting something like that here is not really about games as much as it's inviting dumb political commentary about dumb political commentary ie the political content in the thing being criticized is mostly incidental. It won't always be clear whether a topic/article is a Trojan horse but there are some good heuristics like whether or not it flows from the content.

Wait. So you're saying that I could actually get a lot more shit done at work now because I'm no longer heavily involved in heated political topics about a country I don't even live in?

The horror.

No, I'm not, and that's why I don't participate on that other message board.

At least here you can have sensible discussions in a videogame forum without it devolving in to race theory or identity politics.

I am ok with this change. I wasn't too attached from the political forum. I kinda went there to see what the world was exploding over from time to time. Otherwise, nothing of value was lost. Real shame cause I appreciated the addition of the forum because the offtopic section was FLOODED with Trump posts in 2016. There was practically 1 offtopic post for every 10 Trump posts. It was necessary. Now people have just become so full of hatred and divisiveness. The change definitely seems worth.

So people who say that X game is 'too woke to pander to the SJWs' are going to be banned for making the conversation political? Or is it not considered a political statement to notice that a game is leaning towards a particular political ideology?

I guess it depends on how you say it. I know it is cool to say a lot of swear but somone here abuse it :P

I liked the idea of it as a containment area for political stuff that I could dip my toes in now and again, if I felt that I needed to, but I do understand the difficulty in moderating such a thing. I don't know how the rest of the site is going to avoid political crap but I hope it succeeds. This is one of the few places I can still go to talk about my hobbies and not get talked down to.

Was okay as a politics sub-forum on a gaming board, but it felt like some posters came to a gaming board to post about politics, which is dumb and weird.

If moderation was unmanageable then nuking was the right option, probably.

Also as someone who was here before we had the split and the politics forum

Good riddance.

It was such a shitty feeling going into a thread about something and then it devolves into politics. I'm not one of those "shut up and dribble" types but I think talking politics with strangers on the Internet is just a bad idea in general.

The politics forum definitely brought out the worst in people. It seemed prone to people shitposting. I vented in there a few times and I felt safe expressing an opinion there that I might not feel safe doing on say twitter, but there are other places on the internet I can go to do that.

It was a source of major friction and drama within the community. It was attracting the wrong type of people to GAF, and pushing away the right type of people. It was a nightmare to moderate. It was frequently an embarrassment to be associated with.

It's gone.

Happy Earth Day, everyone. 🌎♥️

Now let's see if we can't all get along. :)

You're not ok with white hatred? Maybe next time you make a list of all the shit you don't want to be associated with, include white hatred.

Well, I for one think it's a pity. I see a lot of people saying it's impossible to talk about politics these days, which I can understand because the topic has never quite been so high voltage. Still, I also saw OmegaSupreme OmegaSupreme mention the JBP podcast thread and am reminded of him saying once, way back at the beginning of his free speech crusade, that if we don't have the ability to talk to one another, then what's left?

I realize that this is a gaming forum and there are probably other dedicated politics forums for this, but I thought there at least was some value in a place where people from around the world, who at least had some other stuff in common, could talk about politics casually.

But, like other posters have said, I didn't have to moderate it (and things sure could go nuts there)

Wack. People always in their feelings. But I didn't frequent there anyway, but did enjoy the left and right try and justify why each side were better than the other.

Goodnight sweet prince. The snowflakes won again.

What is the verdict on games being "woke" or SJWs "ruining" them? That has been a hot topic in the Gaming Section for while.

I didn't include it because this seemed to be focused around the problems on this site, and this site also doesn't give a platform to people who spout white hatred.

I ventured rarely in there, aside from maybe 40 or so posts if that. I think the intention was good at first but I think it also became clear that it was the equivalent of a cupboard in your house you shove shit in, that you don't wanna see.

And everytime you look in there ready to tidy it up you just look at it, think fuck this and close the door again.

I think it served a purpose in lancing a boil though. A lot of the political stuff did die down in games and OT which was the aim, so we've used politics board as a way to wean most off the habit. And it's now served its purpose is how I see it.

I love games man, and I just wanna chat shit about them with all you asswipes.

I look forward to seeing all these great changes to the site because the mods have more time!

Then why did you exclusively post in politics? You're saying you were part of the problem?
Dude I have no idea if they actually have any plans like that. It was just a guess/example of the upside.

And I was absolutely part of the problem. I shouted just as loud for my side as anyone else. I made my fair share of stupid and divisive threads. I had my own sets of childish arguments. And I posted there because I enjoyed it. Just like everyone else, but I'm not blind. I saw what the section was becoming. Just look at the bans page from the last few months. It was bringing in the worst kind of people. The forum is better off without the section bringing in racists and other scumbags.

But like I said already I'm looking forward to the change pace. I'll be checking out the various communities over the weekend.

Not being able to see the post now... it's hard to know what exactly happened.
Do you really need to? Several people perm'd all at once for supporting white supremacy.

Do you really think the staff made an oopsie or that it was just a simple misunderstanding after perm-ing that many people?

People who insist on SJWing/GGing everything in gaming along political framing can be deported. Someone rolling their eyes at a "bigot sandwich" moment in a game is not going to be taken issue with. Most gaming talk on GAF lately has been normal enough, less of an issue than it was a few years ago. Activism will continue to be discouraged.

He post like an Alexa answering a question.
its ace. It's half bad English half bot English. He only posts about the topic at hand, it's never nasty or emotional or vindictive, it's always upbeat and positive.

and in a weird way, his bad English makes the posts really deep and insightful

Noted. Just wanted to make sure. Though I guess you and the staff will be putting out a formal statement at some point. I'll probably just wait for that before I just spam questions lol

Just want to say I really appreciated the many discussions we had going in the UKPoliGAF thread. Feel like a fish out of water right now tbh.. :/
