Polytron Hacked?

No no, we don't have to "take off our masks."

Let's pretend that everyone had to use their real names all the time. Would that prevent a hacker from stealing someone's identity and doxxing like this anyway? No. But there would be other effects, like people with Muslim names, or feminine names being taken less seriously, or being outright harassed.

No doubt about that. Agree with you there. But even in the middle zone between real names and anonymity which would be usernames (like here on gaf) people can be harassed or ostracized. It's why moderation is more necessary in places like this than over there where moderation is more janitor duty (cleaning up spam, child porn, e.t.c.). If everyone was mandated to use their real personalities on the internet everywhere we would go a step above both janitors and moderators and into straight up law enforcement, which already has precedent in the social media realm where people use real names and information.

Well, here I was hoping FEZ II was still secretly in development...

If he really does sell the IP-- and if I were in his shoes and could walk away from things with a bit of financial security and do something else, I would too-- then I could see a Fez 2 being developed. However for an IP to be sold to an interested party under these circumstances... has the potential to be a PR nightmare for the buyer.

Phil should make FEZ II. Make an even better game than the first one, show these fuckers!
Go dark for 2 years if you have to. Get a cabin in the woods. Don't let them win!

Truly sad for him and Polytron. I'm currently playing Fez for the first time an it's pretty sad to see all this mess right now :(

Same. I can see he put a lot of love into this game. Really heartbreaking to see all the crap going down, all because he's an "outspoken" gaming personality. Half the shit he says is not even remotely as bad as his most vocal detractors. Man, fuck /v/.

You know though, wasn't the beauty of Fez the fact that it kind of unraveled to be this much bigger game with a ton of secrets and stuff? I never played it but that's what I got from others. I don't know if Fez II could have ever recaptured anything like that.

edit: but I would have liked to have seen him try. :\

i would like to announce that POLYTRON and the FEZ IP are now for sale. no reasonable offer will be turned down. i am done. i want out.

What's sad, someone will think they've made gaming world a better place if it will become true.

real talk: what other industry in the entire world has this level of fuckery from the "fans".

nah, nobody has died.

not saying that as a smart ass comment-- people die at concerts and sporting events and other things all the time. artists get jailed, tortured, and killed for expressing themselves in all kinds of other media, though less these days.

it's ugly, but could be much, much worse.

I can guarantee you Phil wishes his "nudes" were hacked instead of his entire life ruined. This is several orders of magnitude worse than any paparazzi shit.

However, you're completely right about sport riots. That shit ends lives. But I don't think the gaming fandom should be proud to keep such criminal company.

How much damage do you think was done exactly? It's hard for me to gauge what exactly was lost. Is he financially ruined?

I hope the little piece of shit "hacker" gets it bad. Fucking human trash.

I want my Fez 2.

He will be "hero". Because he made Fish quit the industry entirely.

What a waste. Fish was a good guy. First time he wanted to do good and then this happens. I will miss him.

I mean I've heard of TV writers getting death threats occasionally but I honestly don't think any other medium has this kind of stuff happen as regularly as it does in games.

i think it's the size or 'feel' of the community that really surprises folks, i guess
games are much more niche than television as a whole just by the nature of time and interest but the amount of really absurd and insane events like this seem to come about often enough to certainly create that negative image (society as a whole having generally negative views about games is more or less the root of this though so idk how much it contributes but it's enough to hurt folks who are in that community)

sports has really crazy shit happen pretty often too in it's name for equally as inconsequential (ultimately) stuff but the community base for that is much much greater to the point of where you can't really just blame 'sports fans' in the same way that the 'niche' feel of a gaming community

same w/ television/movie stars and paparazzi insanity and shit or music-related murders and whatnot

i feel like with games folks ultimately have a much more communal/closer feel and great investment into the hobby so crazy shit like this not only happens more often than it feels like it should, but also that hurts the community more? idk

Nah, even if money was transferred, it'll be easily trackable and insured anyway. It will be a pain to change all of his personal info, and some stuff can't be "taken back," such as his address. But he can recover, after a lot of headaches.

It's unfortunate that there are some GAFers in here that resemble the gamers that Phil has been talking about. It makes it even easier to empathize with him.

:(

If this included all of his and Polytron's bank account information, it's probably a huge mess that will entail a large loss of money even in the best case scenario.

That's sort of the fun of anticipating the sequel, I guess. Imagining where they could have gone with it. If I recall correctly, the difference between Fez and it's sequel was supposed to be as different as the change from The Legend of Zelda to The Adventures of Link.

For anybody who has no idea what this was all about, here seem to be some fairly comprehensive cliff notes which is nice as it turns out there's been extensive attempts to try to delete much of the discussion over it: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/quinnspiracy

The TLDR version is that somebody engaged in a wide array of questionable behavior including decided to cheat on her boyfriend with 5 different people in the games/game journalism industries with the aim of trading sex for positive coverage of her game. This was outted after her boyfriend discovered the cheating and made it public. There was a backlash against her actions. Phil Fish defended her at one time deciding to tweet to gamers that "you are essentially rapists."

I assume something is missing from the article since it makes no mention of what exactly drove Phil Fish to decide to jump into this. When people mentioned SJW I assumed this was some sort of feminism thing yet the article paints her as little more than abhorrent human being, not a feminist of any sort.

I have no idea whats really going on but...

Were any of the hacked files Fez 2 files?

If not does that mean Fez 2 was never really happening?

Whats going on?

A PC containing financial info, and binaries specific to the various online services was hacked. Here's a log of all the files:

http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=HgXQAAcY

I don't see any data related to source code for any games. I imagine if the hacked PC had the Fez source code, that would have been leaked to.

Therefore I can conclude that this PC would not have been used for making Fez 2, should it exist in any capacity.

Have to be honest here, I really, really, really dislike Fish. But this? Nope. Doesn't deserve it. Actually, he doesn't deserve the hate too. I don't like him, but that doesn't give me some sort of right to go an tell him.

Nah. Like I said, any transfer would be done online and easily trackable, not to mention insured.

Hell, transferring money out of Fish's account would be the fucking dumbest thing you could do, as it will leave an obvious trail to whomever does it.

No proof of any of that.

Really disappointing to see all of those who play video games coming under fire from gaming press, indie developers, and those close to these developers. Seeing "gamers are terrible people" tweets pretty regularly is pretty painful.

Nobody comes out of this mess in any better shape. As awful as I feel about the crap that's gone on this past week, sweeping-- and frankly, shitty-- generalizations that implicate everyone only make matters worse. It creates an "us versus them" mentality, when many people didn't even realize they were supposed to pick a side while they were playing video games this past week.

It's just ugly-- and it's getting uglier.

Anyone can be anyone is my point as well.

There structure works.

If they were behind it people can still say, "hey it wasn't us, they were just claiming to be us!"
If they weren't behind it, the people who are can say, "it was those assholes at 4chan"

I guess im just frustrated because it works. There is nothing to do, no one to blame, and no one to ever take the fall.

But.. what actually would come out of blaming a particular site or community? Nothing. Let the authorities go after those who actually did it.

Oh wow, that would have been interesting...didn't know it would be a huge departure like that.

I just want you to know that 0% of that is true

Let's not point fingers just yet.

Especially at a whole community when it was probably 1 person.

No. The board as a whole never liked Fish and made it their business to fuck with him all the time. They sowed the seed of this whole quinnspiracy bullshit and now fucking destroyed a game and game company over it. moot should just nuke the fucking board and let /vg/ and /vr/ be the only gaming boards on 4chan.

This. And just the fact that apparently his social and government docs were included in the leak? That's shit you can't "close" and start fresh with. That's permanently fucked. He's probably going to have extra procedures/be denied certain financial freedoms for the rest of his life.

Like holy shit.

Can we please stop posting that as if this is a prooven fact and not just some wild theory?
Hey guess what, I also once slept with my boss and it was not to get promoted. Shit happens.

As someone who is a little out of the loop with online-things.

What does "stealing your identy" entail? Is it "only" bank account data?

When I read "they revealed his entire personal information" what does that entail?

Small info down to diary level activities?

For the hundredth time, that didn't happen.

None of this happened. She didn't use her magical vagina to sway journalist to give her FREE game positive reviews. Stop spreading this shit.

Looks like Sony get a discounted rate (in this case ~75% of a wholesale cost) and then pay for every 'sale'.

If I'm reading it correctly; PS+ downloads exceed normal purchased by a lot.

So if the game is $15, Sony would instead pay the publisher $3.75 for every PS+ download?

There is absolutely no justification whatsoever for this sickening behaviour, and I sincerely hope the people responsible are caught (though I doubt it), but could this have been avoided if it wasn't for the censorship?
