Pope Francis Asks Forgiveness For Catholic Church's Persecution Of Waldensians

Pope Francis asked forgiveness on Monday for the Roman Catholic Church's "non-Christian and inhumane" treatment in the past of the Waldensians, a tiny Protestant movement the Vatican tried to exterminate in the 15th century.

Francis made his plea during the first ever visit by a pope to a Waldensian temple on the second day of a trip to Italy's northern Piedmont region, the centre of the Waldensian Church, which has only about 30,000 followers worldwide.

"On behalf of the Catholic Church, I ask forgiveness for the un-Christian and even inhumane positions and actions taken against you historically," he said. "In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us!"

The Waldensians, who now live mostly in Italy and Latin America, were founded by Peter Waldo in France in the late 12th century. He gave up his wealth and preached poverty but as the movement grew it came into increasing theological conflict with the papacy.

The movement, an early precursor of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, was branded as heretical and in 1487 Pope Innocent VIII ordered its extermination.

Some 1,700 Waldensians were killed in 1655 by Catholic forces commanded by the Duke of Savoy.

Never heard of the Waldensians before, had to look them up:

Wow

HIGHLY DISTURBING MATERIAL:
The Catholic forces did not simply slaughter the inhabitants. They are reported to have unleashed an unprovoked campaign of looting, rape, torture, and murder.

According to one report by a Peter Liegé:

Little children were torn from the arms of their mothers, clasped by their tiny feet, and their heads dashed against the rocks; or were held between two soldiers and their quivering limbs torn up by main force. Their mangled bodies were then thrown on the highways or fields, to be devoured by beasts. The sick and the aged were burned alive in their dwellings. Some had their hands and arms and legs lopped off, and fire applied to the severed parts to staunch the bleeding and prolong their suffering. Some were flayed alive, some were roasted alive, some disemboweled; or tied to trees in their own orchards, and their hearts cut out. Some were horribly mutilated, and of others the brains were boiled and eaten by these cannibals. Some were fastened down into the furrows of their own fields, and ploughed into the soil as men plough manure into it. Others were buried alive. Fathers were marched to death with the heads of their sons suspended round their necks. Parents were compelled to look on while their children were first outraged [raped], then massacred, before being themselves permitted to die.

How can an organization with such a history as this still exist? If this was any other institution it would've been compelled to shut down or condemned by the millions.

You mean like most other large scale institutions and organizations and countries and governments that have been around that long?

Oh dear. If any story would present that I would dismiss it as too edgy, but as usual life one-ups fiction.

Indeed. Everyone is probably heir to a bunch of crimes done, supported or endorsed by their ancestors. We are all decendants of thousands of years of human dynasties.

You have to be very careful with historic reports or hearsay, see e.g. John of Leiden and the events surrounding Münster. Obviously I cannot comment on this particular case. That said, brutal slaughtering or torture was unfortunately not too uncommon and people proved extremely inventive when it came to that, see e.g. the torture/execution of Leiden after his capture or the sack of Magdeburg in 1631.

A thousand more wrongs to right, but this guy is deeping much better than the previous ones. Respect.

Holy fuck. Like how the fuck could you ever do that outside of being a George R.R. Martin villain?

It is quite a lot more extreme actually...How verifiable is the source? That sounds...hellish.

If this sounds like fun, check out the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre or the massacres of the Paulicians

People are really good at knocking each other off, i mean, fuck, look at this celebratory medal of the event

The Catholic Church is one of the longest running criminal organizations in history. I dunno why anyone would be surprised at the slap on the wrist, move pedophiles to a new parish shenanigans.

The extermination of the Waldensians is a travesty even more when taking into account that it was government sanctioned in order to procure their fortresses and break their spirit when they were only arming for the express purpose of preventing such tragedy.

Thousands of people exterminated for their money and land.

Jesus fucking christ that is horrific what they did back then. It is literally as bad as the worst atrocities of the past 100 years of warfare.

The old catholic church sounds as bad as modern isis.

That was centuries ago. Will we have to wait centuries for the church to answer for its crimes of today?

Yes. Just like we have to wait for centuries before the US government will apologize for its crimes in the middle east or south america or anywhere else in the world. Or any other government for that matter.

Heh, at least Congress and the Senate apologized for slavery so all is forgiven amirite?
As for the St Barthlemy, I fail to see how it's more of the Vatican's problem more than France that is to blame.
And I am not saying that Vatican is not to blame.
