Haha, I was there for the special. At my Popeyes they ran out of ketchup, which caused one of the families to go crazy. The employees couldn't do anything, but the family just kept waiting and yelling at the employees. They left the store yelling, "STUPID, STUPID, STUPID BUSINESS!!!" Afterwards my mom told me they were related to my uncle's wife, which made things even weirder.

How could this story have possibly been considered newsworthy to begin with? I guess the news folks wanted to do a nudge nudge wink wink lol story or something.

.

I guess black people just have good taste.

Rochester's racial makeup is nearly 50% white. Nice try, though.

Oh please, this is selective reporting. I find it highly unlikely it was only black people that came to Popeyes that day.

probably just a dominant black neighborhood...
I'm from Rochester, NY.

YOU'RE RIGHT

Blacks, Italians, and one Irish family. It made for wonderful block parties.

I went to Burger King yesterday at around 11:30 AM, and they ran out of burger meat right before they made my Whopper. I had already paid for it and everything. They offered me a choice of one of their chicken value meals. Apparently I had visited a Chicken King by mistake.

I could easily see how the story made it onto local news. I do not see how the crew would have trouble tracking down a lone white person to interview out of the likely dozens that approached the drive-through window. Obviously it could be an oversight, but I'm leaning towards not...

That said. :lol

Seriously! :lol Some people just like to exaggerate over nothing.
"What do you mean 'some people'!?"

Also, "Do to high demand..." :lol

This guy was awesome. :lol

But that whole news piece was nothing more than selective reporting. I'm willing to bet tons of white people showed up and they just weren't filmed. The local KFC here ran out of chicken a few months back when I went in. People were freaking out and they were mostly white.

Also fuck this thread, now all I can think of is trying to get some fried chicken and it's midnight here.

Rochester has six Popeye's? I only knew of the two. Both way too damn greasy.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Is it racist to laugh?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Also LOL at the lady yelling at the prompter even though there was no one inside.

This made me hungry.

I love fried chicken too but damn. I would have just taken my business elsewhere and coughed up a few extra dollars. It was a special, people got there before you. No need to yell at the prompter.

This is just crap. If a news crew went there for 30 mins and filmed the first dozen drivers that wished to discuss it, it hardly makes them racist if the drivers happen to be all a certain race. The burden of proof is on you to prove your allegations of 'selective reporting.' Effectively you wanted a Popeye's drive-thru film package quota.

And :lol at the girl that drove all the way cross town to different Popeyes' in an SUV.

The point is, most people with half a brain are going to realize that a story on fried chicken featuring exclusively blacks is going to appear insensitive. They are going to realize this for the same reason that GAF immediately caught onto the humor in the video. I find it hard to believe that nobody- not the reporter, camera crew, producer, nor editor- realized what they were doing. A smart news station would have stuck around until they found a white person to interview so as to avoid the very humor that GAF finds in this thread. Which the local community and NAACP might not find so humorous.

That does not mean that it is absolutely and unquestionable due to racist reporting. But it's certainly a good possibility.

This is not funny because of the stereotype, its funny because of the people's reaction. A lady lecturing a drive-tru and the "No Chicken?!" guy are what make this funny.
.

Plus, I don't blame them for being angry. Popeye's is fucking delicious, so I would've been mad too. :lol

OMFG I'm thinking what we're all thinking but not gonna say it.
"I've been looking forward to this day and I'm dissapointed" HAHA wow.

should've gone to a bojangles instead and gotten some spicy fries along with their chicken
Oh hell yes, Bojangles is easily the best.

Cajun Filet Biscuit + Spicy Fries = Heaven on Earth.

Or they did the rational thing and said "Well, we've got our story so we're done." There's no point in waiting around for a white person to appease those with sticks in their asses.

Norma's take said:
Criticism is often leveled at 13WHAM that we do not feature Black people or other people of color in our stories unless they are criminals. As a person of color myself, I am sensitive to this.

So, you can imagine my thoughts when I saw our report last night about two local Popeye’s running out of chicken and the mayhem that ensued. My gut reaction was that the story--although a legitimate consumer complaint—seemed to reinforce a cultural stereotype about Black people and chicken. I know for a fact that no one on our staff meant for that to be the point of the story, but the fear that we would be accused of this sounded an alarm to me. It’s sad that I even had to worry about this.

The story was what it was: customers, who happened to be Black, expressing anger about a heavily advertised special that ran out. Our job as journalists is not to “whitewash (sorry, no pun intended)” the news. We aren’t here to manufacture, make up, or tamper with what exists so we ran the story. In hindsight, I’m glad we did. Race aside, it is a perfect consumer story…and consumers have a right to be angry.
You did call them out as racist. Unjustly in my opinion.

it ain't no secret around here, that blacks and chickens are quite fond of one another.

Look at 'em...just like in the encyclopedia!

The vid is hilarious, the newscaster's incredibly cheesy pun ('clucking' their disapproval :lol ), the testimonials, the drama, and the final shot of the second anchor barely containing her laughter.

You know the funny thing about this is...Well besides that...and that...and also that :lol

How much money and time did people waste on gas driving around looking for this fabulous deal. Its great to save a few bucks while they'll end up spending more then they'll save just trying to get it :lol
