She tries, you can tell by the quality of her work and her performances. Unlike some other pop stars who get mentioned here, she hustles and earns her praise. I said she doesn't strive for Billboard certifications anymore, and it obviously isn't because she doesn't think she can get them. Formation is a private video on her youtube channel, the single for which is only available on a failing music subscription service. And yet it already amassed a huge cultural footprint. Meanwhile others can churn out #1 songs but fail to have anywhere near the relevance or influence.
Beyonce's new marketing is hella smart. Listening to her song requires climbing a pay wall and a surprising amount of effort, same with finding her music video through a link and not by searching for it on youtube. Her tour tickets are crazy expensive, and she refuses to do interviews. She's making herself a hot commodity and it's all by making her material a little more unreachable. And she knows that she's the only person who can do that and have the public play along. She's fucking brilliant.
I wouldn't be surprised if her next album is only available in a remote cave on the coast of Niihau.
