I appreciate the write-up Aya, I read the whole thing :) I will admit it may border on irrational, but she just rubs me the wrong way and has always seemed very fake to me. I'm not gonna go looking for links of all the stories I've read about her, and the stuff about her vile criminal husband (if she really is leaving him, that will actually improve her for me), I'm just gonna drop the Bey thing for now, don't wanna poke the Hornet's nest any further lol. I'm under no delusions, I've already made peace with the fact that Bey is gonna win this POPGAF contest that's going on right now lol ;)

I just discovered Grimes a few days ago! I was searching for iamamiwhoami's videos on YouTube, and Grimes popped up in the "similar suggestions" or whatever on the side, I guess they have a similar style of music (though Grimes is more dance-y) I decided to click cuz I know some POPGAFFER's have mentioned her before, and well she actually kinda slays! :)

I don't know all her work of course and have no clue how many albums she has, but the two songs I've checked out so far both rock:

I will say that I admire enigmatic for having the balls to go after Beyonce and her establishment, it reminds me of the movie 300 or that fight scene in Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers. :)

That said, Beyonce still is in a different class than every other pop star, and that includes Madonna. It's a similar reason to why Beyonce has been around almost a third the time Madonna has, and yet has garnered more unanimous love and support across the masses than Madonna, who with each era managed to find a new demographic to alienate permanently. Chock it up to good PR or playing it "safe", but all that will matter years down the line when Beyonce will be considered the most iconic female pop star of all time and Madonna will no longer be.

You can deny it if it brings you solace, sis. But I'm looking at the trends and what I'm seeing is that Beyonce is constantly peaking. To be doing that this late in her career still is pretty telling, and it shows that she has the capacity to keep that up. She's never had a career nosedive, and the extent of any kind of career "stall" was the release of 4, but even then she was doing things like, you know, singing at one of the most iconic presidential inaugurations in history. No one's had a career consistency like Beyonce, and I'd be hard-pressed to imagine that after all this time she would find a way to plateau in popularity. I do think she'll be the biggest name in music when we look back at this in 20 years' time.

look i'm not saying that her place among the pop music pantheon isn't all-but-assured, but really the difference between her and madonna wrt their impact on pop music is enormous.

So far 6 nominees are tied for slots 17 and 18, so assuming it stays this way the rest of the day I will present all six to the thread, and you just PM me your two prefererred entrants. It'll be a lightning round so it might just last for 30-60 minutes depending on voter turnout. lol

I'd say the only thing Madonna has over anyone else is her penchant for reinvention. No other artist can really change personas at the drop of a hat.
Her entire discography is still utter shit, almost entirely due to her lack of any sort of singing skill. How anyone could bear to listen to the audible form of white rice is beyond me.

Of course, without Iggy signing off on it ... the vid can't be legally released. It also means she won't collect years and years of mailbox money ... like Ray J still does.

Madonna's vocals on Ray of Light aren't offensive at all. They're after she had vocal lessons but before she started overenunciating, nice and loose like her stans.

I hope Rita Ora's US debut is successful. I saw her interview at The Breakfast Club and she seems pretty cool and down to earth.

Her self titled was hot trash though

edit: eaux the alber didn't land but her singles did. Could have sworn I saw it on spotify tho

Okay, list. Couple indie flops. Only one "mega star", cause I feel I don't listen to the rest as far as full albums despite thinking some of their singles are good tracks.

1) St. Vincent
2) Jessie Ware
3) Joanna Newsom
4) Bjork
5) Fionna Apple
5) La Roux
6) Charli XCX
7) Beyonce

In general I've warmed up to pop acts a lot in the past few years, especially compared to HS years. Top 2 are specifically favorite artists, made threads for both of them. Would have included Purity Ring but that's a duet.

Also, I will admit to lurking here for fun fairly frequently.

I didn't include Fionna on my list, sadly. But I know Arte would be proud of the Fionna love right now!
