Portal 2 |OT| Sleep. Spuds. Science.

Some thoughts:

Do you guys notice this fact: For Portal 2, from the trailer before the release, to the game itself, the VALVE made a lot of cutscenes. And seems like all this cutscenes are CG, not in-engine. As we know, VALVE didn't like to make cutscenes, except two opening of L4D, they didn't make other CGs.

So I highly doubt that the cutscenes of Portal 2 are not CG, but prerendered by VALVE's new engine. I believe nowadays the game engine has the power to do that kind of graphics, just a little more antialiasing and high-res mesh.

Maybe we can see the new engine on E3, along with HL2EP3 or even HL3!!

The cg looking cutscenes were awesome, super high poly models etc.
The engine might be able to pull it off but with really poor (useless for anything else than pre rendering) efficiency for all we know though.

Yes. You can see pre-rendered cut-scenes in Media folder of the game. Use Bink.

Well as I recall there's an internal thing called Source Filmmaker, which features fancier non-real-time depth of field, fancier motion blur (looks to be the same as the one included in the TF2 replay update), as well as other fancier graphical options as needed.
All round pretty fancy then. As seen in the trailers you mention.

i'd just like to thank this community for not running every sentence in the game into the ground, then freaking out posting pictures of every portal related thing they see in the world in every thread.

kinda bitter about the loss of reddit.com/r/gaming

Just beat it in 6 hours on the dot (SP), listened to most dialog, great game loved it :)

My favorite aspect of it was definitely the
exploration of the facility and the 1950's sections.

All Valve videos are pre-rendered inengine using their Source Movie Maker. They re-render scenes several times to add detail, they also have in the engine a lot Ultra High Settings that is hidden away from normal users. At one point these appeared in TF2 because someone forgot to remove them (They are not in it anymore). If you changed certain settings in your CFG you could access a lot cleaner IQ, higher resolution textures and very detailed character models. This is how I remember it all, could be wrong though.

I have some images below if you want to see how it looked:

I don't suppose there's a way to actually check how long you've been playing the same stream of a game in the Xbox version? Just to get a more accurate count of how long it took you to play a specific run through.

Just finished this. I lost a little interest and took a break around chapter 7, but it was really good. Valve really are the top dogs in gaming. The ending was really swell too.

maybe someday I'll play co-op, too bad you can't solo it with an AI

One of the funniest things about this game to me was the achievement for reaching Chapter 8.

The chapter is titled
The Part Where He Kills You
. The achievement is also titled
The Part Where he Kills You
. And the description for the achievement is simply
This is that part
. Also, as you walk into that chapter, GLaDOS says
"This is the part where he kills you."
Then the chapter title appears on screen. They just fucking hammer it home so many times, I can't help but laugh.

Boo-yah! Got my time from beginning to end down to less than 5 hours. Sweeeeeet.

Approximately 4:40 for me. Next time I'll actually time it and do it in one sitting with no breaks.

Is that for real, and they removed them again?
Why would they do such a thing? Getting 150-250 fps on a 3yo graphics card, I surely wouldn't mind some better textures and models.
If they already made them anyhow...
Just boggles the mind.

The bots in the cutscenes before the game start look way too good to be ingame assets.

edit : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYsfhxnX-Zg

upon closer inspection maybe it just is the lighting , dof and motion blur
and the awesome animations
that makes it look like cgi.
Why can't we have this ingame on the pc valve, why.
Yeah, those are in-game assets. You can definitely tell when they zoom up close. The Source Movie Maker produces great results, that's for sure.

Finally started this today, after playing through the first one yesterday. Only on chapter 3, but what a fantastic game. I know it's early to say such a thing, but this is by far the best game I've played this year. And I have a feeling it'll only get better.

I'm assuming it's due to stability issues.

Yeah I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I love the little "Space corrupted core" from the
last battle

Just started the game and my initial impression is that I don't like the blue eyeball thing, it's annoying. And when the game asks you to pick it up you're not allowed to drop it. Also the humor seems a lot more "in your face." And not just because the blue guy is literally IN YOUR FACE.

It gets better once glados comes back into play.
I didn't like the new character either, I guess it fits his character to be so shallow n all, you'll see.

Ludicrous, Stephen Merchant's best role, best spherical acting ever, and if you don't know the plot of the game you should play a liiiitle bit more.

Yes I played the original, and yes game improved the instant Glados was back. Still not sure what's up with the blue guy but since people seem to be suggesting it's story specific I think I'll be going dark again till I see what's up with that.

Jus know that you won't have to carry him around any more for the rest of the game, if that's part of what's bothering you.

I'm on
Chapter 3
and it has been fantastic so far. I'm loving every single piece of dialogue and
GlaDOS sounds so bitter
! Hahaha!

I can't believe I did it, but I started the campaign again for the fourth time since release. I haven't done that with a game since...well, I can't remember. I thought I would be finished after I did my third run through, but nope!

I trusted her too (honestly I did, I don't want her to be bad) Heartbroken.
I went as far as running into that room twice just in case I missed a way to get out.
It felt kind of out of character for her, she always gave you a chance to survive in Portal 1 , even with the furnace conveyor.
After all ,she designed the place, so it has to be deliberate.
At least she redeemed herself at the end , such a bittersweet ending too.
Caroline was the best addition to her personality.

Just wrapped it up. Incredible game. Up there with Bioshock, Mass Effect and RDR this generation. Will play it at least 1-2 more times and complete the co-op sometime.

I ran straight in, didn't even think about it.

I'm getting toward the end of Chapter 8. I find some of the puzzles in larger rooms or in multiple segments to be frustrating. I don't feel like I'm making any progress and I lose my patience. Also, getting stuck because I don't see a white piece 100 yards in the air on the ceiling or some other small thing is annoying. I know what I have to do, but I'm just overlooking some small thing and it gets frustrating.

After I finish the single-player I'm going to jump into co-op with a friend. Hopefully I enjoy it.

I basically just finished the game in one sitting. Loved it, but it was nowhere near 8 hours for me. More like 5. Oh well there is still co-op.

I'm kind of bumming about Portal 2 right now. I finished the game, then I finished co-op. I want to keep going but there is like, zero replay value at the moment, and I'm not interested in commentary. I'm interested in gameplay.

Replay value isn't affecting me. As I said earlier, I'm on my fourth play through of the campaign. There's something new I've discovered about the game in every play through. Most recently
you can "lock yourself out" of one test early on in the game, before Wheatley wakes up GLaDOS
.

Completed it today... I really thought before the ending they couldn't suprise me - that I have seen all there is to see...

...
..
.

Really was speechless! It all just happend... so awesome.

Really, the only thing they could have done better is make an option ingame where when you pay them another 50.- you forget about the game and can relive it again with a fresh mind. So you can get your mind blown over and over again!!!

Soooo looking forward to the DLC.
