I don't think that pepper spray is a good option if you live in a weaponized nation. Pepper spray is good to "spray'n'run" not so good for confrontation. It would be safer to just talk the victim and accompany her away, ignoring the bigot.

The suspect in last night's double homicide was booked into the Multnomah County Jail early this morning. 35-year-old Jeremy Joseph Christian of North Portland was booked on charges of Aggravated Murder (two counts), Attempted Murder, Intimidation in the Second Degree (two counts), and Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon. Christian is being held without bail.

Christian will be arraigned on Monday in Multnomah County Court and may face additional charges after the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office presents the case to a grand jury.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner is scheduled to conduct autopsies on the two deceased victims late-Saturday morning. After the autopsies, the names of all three victims will be released to the public.

No additional information is being released at this time.

Christian is a known right wing extremist and white supremacist. On April 29, Christian showed up to the right-wing "March for Free Speech" on 82nd Avenue in Montavilla with a baseball bat in an attempt to assault left-wing protesters. The bat was quickly confiscated by Portland police officers. He ranted how he was a nihilist. He'd soon yelled racial slurs ("fuck all you n*****s") and gave the Nazi salute throughout the day. He yelled "Hail Vinland" throughout the day.

A few Portland police officers on April 29 appeared to be familiar with Christian, but not threatened by him. They claimed he had a head injury and was mentally ill.

Christian has a criminal record that includes a host of felonies going back to 2002, when he was convicted of first-degree robbery and second-degree kidnapping. He also has a conviction for carrying/using a dangerous weapon from 2002.

Shouldn't he be arraigned for hate crimes as well? I mean he is a white nationalist who was harassing two Muslim women (which from what I understand is one of the examples in the Portland Bias/Hate crime laws). I also personally like the cops going "maybe he was drunk" as an excuse. Like, if it was reversed and a minority enacted this, they would have been shot dead without a second thought.

That's the thing. People have to talk down people like this in Portland all the time. And usually the person verbally attacking is someone who has no control over their own life and has decided that attacking others gives them some kind of power or control. And there are a lot of these kinds of people and the physical attacks are getting fairly frequent. I just know my friends are scared, and I'm scared for them. I hope they stay safe. I hope I never get up one day to hear they've been stabbed on the way to work or back home.
