Potential Mega Rumor - Apple to ditch headphone jack & require Lightning for iPhone7

In the future, phones won't have batteries. You just leave them connected to the charger units all the time to use them.

Actually, that's more or less how most people I know use small iPhones already. Only the Plus versions have batteries which can last a whole day.

I guess those people you know do nothing but play with their phones 12+ hours a day.

This rumor has been floating around for a while without much substance until now.

They've already patented a newer type of headphone jack so that's always an option.

And any new iPhone with either change will come with EarPods with Lightning/new jack anyway.

Strikes me as one of those "people will be inconvenienced and mad for a year and then forget all about it" kind of changes. Headphones should be trending toward bluetooth and removable cords anyway. People like me who like EarPods will get suitable models with their phones anyway. People who like using really specific tech will be using Android anyway.

You know what else is ubiquitous? Bending your phone.

ooooh this guy

Spell it out for me, I'm pretty slow.

You said you're not worried about something that hasn't happened, yet there is pretty decent evidence that it's being worked towards, I said I'm not worried about something that hasn't happened, despite there being pretty good evidence that it's what we're headed towards.

Maybe I don't understand strawmen very well?

Is it because you think your speculation is more valid than mine?

It's a strawman because you intentionally exaggerated and misrepresented my post while also removing the rest of the context it was written in.

It's pretty obvious that the global scientific consensus on climate change is not equivalent to a unnamed source from a blog post you likely can't read.

I didn't make any speculation in my post.

Welp android here I come. Like hell am I going to buy this thing and use their shitty headphones. My sennheisers will not be replaced anytime soon. All this is is another money grab by forcing people to buy new accessories.

Fuck that.

I want as many options as possible for my phone. Headphones, Bluetooth, standard USB...

I can't stand proprietary bullshit. ESPECIALLY Apple's proprietary bullshit.

Fair enough. I don't know where I got the idea that Apple would pursue such a design. It's completely unlike them.

I would imagine if they did this it would be an optional thing, like there would be a slightly less thin one that you could also buy that includes the headphone jack. Otherwise it's just stupid.

Not a chance. They need an absolute stranglehold on the mobile market to pull something like this,
I think they definitely have the power to enact new standards but it's going to be a tough sell.

Knowing its in the service of negligible thinness and their own patents and at the inconvenience of existing headphone owners kind of fucking sucks.

This means very little to me because I use the headphone jack in my iPhone maybe once every six months, but it's a major bummer for folks that use it on a daily basis.

They'll package their devices with garbage proprietary lightning earbuds as a way of subtly trying to up-sell you on their $300 Beats headphones optimized for "premier quality that only the Lightning connector can provide".

You know this will happen.

This is so fucking stupid. I hope it doesn't happen. I hate that I'm considering getting one of their phones... damn you tmobile.

I would imagine Apple is attempting to remove corded headphones altogether. Goes off the trademarks of AirPods two months ago: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/01/airpods-trademark/

Good riddance I say. I cannot stand corded headphones and if it weren't for spotty transmission in wireless sets, I would have dumped normal headphones a long time ago.

cuz i want to spend twice the money on headphones that require battery and sound worse than the ones i already have.

Who would want this, or say that it's going to happen to all phones?

I mean, I assume that thunderbolt isn't capable of analog transmissions. Making all headphones require a built in DAC and potentially bluetooth is very likely going to be detrimental to the cost effectiveness and audio quality of the headphones, and there's very little to gain in exchange.

I think the iPhone 7 will be a 4 style change, so wouldn't actually be surprised for this to happen.

Wireless earbuds as standard and it won't be as big a deal as if it happened when this rumour first surfaced, if anything it will be seen as ahead of the curve.

People will complain but Apple tend to ditch things at the right time, it never hurts them.

We all say this, and then this phone will break sales records still.

Having a cult-like following of hundreds of millions, you really couldn't expect it not to.

So if android moves to bluetooth, I expect prices for bluetooth headphones and earbuds to drop a shitload by the time those particular phones hit the market. When it comes to phones in general, it's only a matter of time before you won't have much choice but to go with the fecal flow.

Is it still a cult if it has hundreds of millions of followers?

wasn't this a thing with the last iPhone? Until the phone cases leak, I call nope

The rumour's been around before, this is the first time I could see it happening though.

The 7 will differentiate itself a lot more than before, like when the 4 was introduced. Things are getting a bit tired.

What's new?

It's thinner.

You know those sturdy ubiquitous headphone jacks, this is the opposite. Amazing right!

You know what else is amazing, 16GB of storage in 2016.

Pre order today.
Funny thing is this older guy(60s) was complaining about that 16gb space. 64 should be the standard now imo.

Even if 64 is standard, they will still charge us the 64GB price and just remove the 16 and/or 32.

This is Apple afterall. The savings doesnt get passed down.

Aren't lighting to usb convertors cheap? I think my amazon one was about 7 dollars, I can't imagine a smaller one being much more than that... But this is apple after all. Not saying I'm for it, but it's not a deal breaker.

And yet the camera lens will still stick out and look completely stupid. So yeah, of course apple will do this.

I remember one of my first smartphones (an HTC) had a custom connector, it was a bad idea then as well.
