Potential Mega Rumor - Apple to ditch headphone jack & require Lightning for iPhone7

No 3.5mm jack is an absolute dealbreaker on any phone as it means no music or podcasts in my car. I'm not listening to fucking FM radio again and I'm not installing some new shit in my car because a phone manufacturer is abusing their market position like they always like to do.

You get an adaptor.

It is a relic let's be fair, people would rather have no wires. It's going to happen at some point.

Even if 64 is standard, they will still charge us the 64GB price and just remove the 16 and/or 32.

This is Apple afterall. The savings doesnt get passed down.

Actually, the savings did get passed down when they went from 16/32/64GB to 16/64/128GB.

No, requiring adapters because companies take out standardized ports in favor of proprietary is a relic. Apple is somehow convincing you guys to forget this...

No, the point is we won't be fucking about with wires at all. That is what the average consumer will want.

You won't need the port, and if you want wired headphones you just use a lightening adaptor.

it become a relic when the majority of people have moved on, something that hasn't happened with 3.5mm yet or any time soon.

Most just use what comes with the phone, which will be wireless if they do this.

What % of headphones are wireless though? Barely any, this would be a HUGE change for 99% of people.

I see what you're saying by using what come with the phone... We'll see...

Likely cause the technology hasn't been there. Beats wireless headphones work pretty flawlessly. It's just a matter of getting earbuds to have decent battery life in a compact design.

The Lightning connector would be terrible for headphones, it's way too shallow. Can't imagine how many times it'd get yanked out with the slightest tug.

I would imagine Apple is attempting to remove corded headphones altogether. Goes off the trademarks of AirPods two months ago: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/01/airpods-trademark/

Good riddance I say. I cannot stand corded headphones and if it weren't for spotty transmission in wireless sets, I would have dumped normal headphones a long time ago.

Wireless has come a long way, but the upper echelon of wired headphones are still unparalleled in terms of sound quality

I don't get Apple's continuing obsession with thinness. I never hear anyone say "my phone is too thick" anymore but I always hear people complain about how they wish their phone had a bigger battery.

There's NOTHING worse than getting halfway through your commute to work and losing battery life in your headphones for the rest of the day. They need to make it way better IMO

I would imagine you would just have an optional lightning connector that would act the same as they are now and just pull small amounts of power from the phone to keep them going. If that were the case it wouldn't change anything on how it works today.

You're assuming I'm smart enough to keep that adapter on me at all times 😂

I've never thought to myself that I needed an even thinner phone.

An extra feeling of solidity in your several hundred dollar smart communication device that goes with you everywhere is a good thing.

Apple could easily push this because they own Beats. All Beats headphones could start shipping with a lightning connector and cable. They will try to force the competition to do the same.

Of course nothing could happen and the 3.5mm jack may still be there.

Apple is clever at creating new revenue streams by locking things down.

How much have they made off that port alone?

1. Create demand for accessories. (fashion, support lifestyle, extend ipod/music brand etc)
2. Change accessory port for accessories.
3. $$$

If they do it, I would say it's less about them abusing their market position and more them trying to keep it. People like thin phones.

If Apple is the first to get rid of the headphone jack it will be to gain a form factor advantage over their rivals. If it doesn't work for you, that sucks, but Apple is a position where they need to grow their already substantial user base. You don't do that by just holding serve.

The money they make on accessories licensing has to be so small compared to their sales revenue that it amounts to a rounding error. They have always been pretty focused on selling more hardware first and foremost. They want to sell phones and they aren't going to jeopardize that to make a few more bucks on accessory licensing.

Also #1 on your plan there is incredibly difficult.

Not sure what the problem is. I haven't used the 3.5" adapter on my iPhone, even worse on my iPad. They both are just open ports for collecting dust. I have BeoPlay H8 bluetooth headphones and my phone connects to my car through bluetooth/lightning cable. Getting rid of the antiquated 3.5" adapter port would free up a lot of internal space. But honestly everyone should consider getting some nice bluetooth headphones, consider some Parrot bluetooths or Beoplays. Reasonably priced too.

Don't know how I feel about this.

I use the earpods that came with my phone 95% of the time since a) they have volume/mic and b) they fit my ears perfectly. So most of the time it wouldn't bug me.

But the times when I wanna use my nicer headphones... I'd have to have a dongle? Hmm.

Droid user here, but if I was a Apple fan I wouldn't be bothered. I switched to Bluetooth head phones this year. I'll never go back.

The other thing that makes this likely is Apple have the margins to go wireless as standard.

Only make things more difficult for their competitors.

Buy a $30 Bluetooth adapter. It's almost 2016, bro. Join us in the present.

This was literally a rumor for the 6 and 6S. I wonder if it's just easy to get photos of aluminum cases without the audio jack drilled in yet.

Doesn't Bluetooth totally ruin the bass in music? I've never been impressed with it.

Same here, picked up a pair of LG Tone Pro's and I love them. Use them for everything but my 3DS since Nintendo decided it doesn't need it.

Why? The iPhone is already thin enough! Who's asking for an even thinner iPhone??

Counter argument: this means the next iphone comes with a 2000+ mah battery. Only justification for this is using a 2200 mah battery and coming with three days of battery life. Three day battery life and 7 hours SOT is the only justification for ditching the headphone jack.

After looking at 200 videos of the Z5 Compact I'm now thoroughly convinced that a bulky smartphone is not a bad thing. Give me battery life and leave the thin battles for chinese OEMs. Not a shot because there's a chinese OEM that made the world's thinnest smartphone by taking out the headphone jack.

Wouldn't surprise me, as much as I understand that people have expensive headphones that still use that jack we are moving into a place where bluetooth should be the general standard and we need something newer and smaller for high-end. Of course lightening was always bullshit proprietary garbage and the cynical view is that they'd take it out to sell more lock-in accessories (and I never buy first party cables for that reason) but I can understand this from the point of view that we need to move on. There's also rumors that Apple wants to fully waterproof it and removing that port will help a lot without needing rubber flaps and stuff. Obviously inductive charging should be next and there's a lot of evil they can do there too. But if they can do both then one wonders why they need a port at all. That's the holy grail, a 100% wireless phone.

People keep wondering who is asking for thinner phones. The answer is pretty simple. No one is really. However, there is still a very good reason that Apple is pushing for thinner phones.

Apple is basically subsidizing the R&D of miniaturization of electronics through their phones so that they can reap the benefits of that R&D in their future wearable products like the Apple Watch. It's not that they need the thinness on their phones, but they do need the thinness on the Watch and whatever future electronics they dream up in the wearable category.

So we can't charge and use headphones at the same time? Brilliant, this is exactly why I haven't owned an iPhone since 4. That Apple ecosystem.
