Hey everyone,

I'm doing a market research (consumer behaviour) course at uni and I've decided to focus on the secondhand games market for my report.

Basically, just trying to throw this survey out there and get some responses so that I can get this thing moving. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes, a lot of the survey is just selecting and deleting options that do not apply

I will seriously appreciate responses! Thanks in advance!

5. Fry's.
6. On release at Fry's discounted price when I really want what they've discounted (they tend to discount really good games, got Jade Empire for $35), or when they drop below 20 bucks if I'm not that excited.
7. No.
8. 2-4 weeks.
9. I'm of two minds here. I bought a bunch of GC games, and they were just sitting on the shelf, so I sold them. But I also bought PS2 and Xbox games and I haven't sold any of those.
10. I sell them, mostly on Amazon.
11. $40
12. $10 below retail
13. No.
18. The chains that do the trade/pre-owned thing get profit twice over. First, they get profit from the original sale as compared with their invoice price. Then they get another burst of profit by buying the game back for $28 and selling it $5 below the price of a new one. This is not just the reason why I don't trade in games - it's the reason why I shop at Fry's instead.
19. No. I'll give my Xbox to my brother after getting a 360.
20.
21. I don't like it.
22. Yes.
23. Amazon.com, and VERY rarely an EB or Gamestop.
24. Amazon because the individual sellers don't charge sales tax and don't plaster stickers all over the box.
25. It ranges from good to sketchy. Amazon is the best IMO, then the retailers, then Ebay is the worst.
26. Me personally? $20.
27. $45 is an OK price, it's just the unacceptably low trade-in rates that turn me off. I understand that if they pay $40 for a game which sits on the shelf until it's $30, they've lost money, and that's a risk. So maybe there could be a one-month window where the trade-in value is $40, then after that, drops to $35 or so until the first price drop is about to hit.
28. Similarly, $5 below retail isn't a big deal. Just provide a trade-in rate which meshes with that.

4. How many games do you buy per month?
Uhhh, not set amount. Buy new releases i want or the occasional cheapie. Average of maybe 3 or 4

5. Where do you usually buy your games?
Games Wizards, EB's, Kmart, BigW etc. Whereever they're cheapest or released at first.

6. Do you usually buy your new games:
- On release
- In the first couple of months, still at full price
- When the game drops to platinum / mid price
- When the game drops to budget price
- Other: Please specify
On release

7. Do you finish most of your games?
LOL no. Sadly.

8. On average, how long does it usually take you to finish your games?
- First day
- First few days
- 1-2 weeks
- 2-4 weeks
- 1-2 months
- 2 months or more
On a game i actually finish, anywhere from 2days (HL2, to a month or so for stuff like Forza/GTA etc. otherwise it never gets finished)

9. When you finish your games or no longer want to play them, do you:
- Keep them all: I consider myself a games collector
- Keep the good ones: I’ll come back to them one day
- Keep the classics: I only hang onto the best
- Sell / trade them all in: I don’t play them again
Keep them, i dont really consider myself a collector, but i dont have a desire to sell/trade them in.

Maybe 30% of its RRP.

13. Have you ever traded in any games? (If yes, go to Q14, if no, go to Q17)
No

18. If not, why not?
Not worthwhile IMO. If i buy 2 new release games, finish them, and trade them in against another new release game, you only save 50% off the RRP usually, or get ripped of in one way or the other.

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?
Nope.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?
No. I'd prefer cash then credit if i were to trade a game in.

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?
For some people i can see the benefit, but for me its not worthwhile. You end up losing money in the longterm, with nothing to show for it.

22. Do you buy second-hand games? (If yes, go to Q20, if no, go to Q22)
No. I like knowing im the only one to of owned the game. Im very funny about that.

23. Where do you usually buy them from?
- eBay / forums / friends
- Retailers (Please specify)
- Other: Please specify
I buy games from retailers. Only brand new games though.

24. Why do you buy them from there? (Can select multiple)

- Only place convenient that sells secondhand games
- Stocks older (retro) product

25. What is your opinion on buying second-hand game products?
Its not for me. I dont like having someone else's unwanted products.

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?
If i where to buy one, i wouldnt pay over 75% of the RRP, and i wouldnt buy one which was a platinum/classic game either way.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?
75% of RRP

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)?
50 of RRP

Well, im probably not suitable for your survery, but i dont it anyways. Obviously i dont like owning a second hand game... i dont like lending htem either. Im very conscious of scratches, marks etc. on my games (and DVD's also).

4. How many games do you buy per month?
Varies. I'd say on the low end, 1-2 a month; on the high end, 4-6.

5. Where do you usually buy your games?
Best Buy, Circuit City, EBGames, GameStop, or Ebay.

6. Do you usually buy your new games:
- When the game drops to platinum / mid price.

7. Do you finish most of your games?
Unfortunately, no. I buy way more than I have time to play.

8. On average, how long does it usually take you to finish your games?
Usually 1-2 weeks. Most of my games are RPGs, though, so they can easily end up in the 2-4 week category if I get busy with other things.

9. When you finish your games or no longer want to play them, do you:
- Keep them all: I consider myself a games collector.

10. How do you get rid of your unwanted games?
On the rare occasion I get rid of anything anymore, it's either:
- Give away.
or
- Sell on eBay / forums / to buddies.

11. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 4 weeks old (Full price new release)?
It would be nice to get more, but I'd expect at least 30-35$.

12. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 9 months old (E.g. Platinum title)?
Around 10$ or so.

13. Have you ever traded in any games?
Ever? Yes, but I haven't really done so in about 8-9 years, so I'll just skip to Question 18. :P

18. If not, why not?
Well, last time I really ever traded anything in, I let go of the majority of my collection. I was a dumb kid thinking: "I rarely play them, so someone else can get some use out of them.," and so I willingly bent over for shitty trade-in rates. On top of that, a bit down the line I totally regretted it -- I found myself sitting around thinking I'd want to play <insert title here> and then I'm like "Oh right!"

Not exactly my most brilliant moment...

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?
No.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?
No.

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?
It's just not worth it.

22. Do you buy second-hand games?
Yes, on occasion.

23. Where do you usually buy them from?
- eBay / forums / friends.

24. Why do you buy them from there? (Can select multiple)
- Other: Please specify.

So I can be sure of the game's condition. I'm really anal about the condition of my games, so any used games I buy have to be in like-new/mint condition or I don't bother. If you try being that way in a retail store, they look at you funny when you pass it up due to a couple scratches... ;)

25. What is your opinion of buying second-hand game products?
Pretty much not worthwhile from a store, as the price, condition, sticker-plastering, etc usually ruins any reasons for bothering in the first place. Otherwise? I think it's fine buying them from other collectors, friends, or off sites like CheapAssGamer, as you can usually find some great deals, without the baggage.

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?
0$. Their prices are always way too high compared to online options, so it's really just not worth bothering.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?
Cleave 10$ off the price.

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)?
10-13$.

Atleast 1/3 of its price, otherwise I'll just hold onto it.

12. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 9 months old (E.g. Platinum title)?

Peanuts.

17. When you'Are finished with a game, do you trade it in (can select multiple):
- Straight away: Best to get the most credit for it.
- After I'm sure I don't want it: Sometimes I change my mind
- After a while: It seems a ripoff to trade things in so soon after release
- If a sequel or similar game comes out
- I leave it until there's a new game I want
- Other: Please specify

After I'm sure I don't want it. I usually play through games just once. If around 1/2 of the games level designs/stages weren't memorable or if they were a chore to finish then I will trade it in.

18. If not, why not?

I won't trade in personal favorite franchises, such as the Sega Rally series. Say that somehow Sega Rally '05 winds up a turd. I will still hold onto it anyway in order to keep the collection up to date.

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?

Yes i will,All but the Xbox. If the 360 is not fully backward compatable then I'll hold onto my current Xbox system.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?

No. Unless the game stinks I won't do this. I feel uncomfortable trading in games right away, for fear of regretting it weeks later.

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?

I love it. Its the gamer's best friend this generation. I buy cheap,I finish them and sell about half back so that my money doesn't all go to the games. I play to enjoy,I don't speed through my games. For that reason I have plenty to buy used, and by the time I finish there are more used/cheap games to buy,its a great formula.

25. What is your opinion on buying second-hand game products?

Its great. I buy used, save money, finish them, trade up,and do the same over again. I don't finish my games fast,I play casually nowdays. Used games are the way to go for me,let the fanatics spend a ton of money,I need to do other things besides spend a load on too many new games that will gather on my shelf collecting dust:)

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?

About 25 dollars nowdays.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?

No more than 30 dollars.

Are you really doing this for a university or are you some market researcher?

Nope, studying 2nd year marketing in Australia. Wish I was though, at least I'd be making some money off this.

Absolutely phenomenal response everyone, I've got more than enough now but feel free to keep them coming. :)

Thanks to everyone.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it? Yeah

1. What country are you from?
UK

2. How old are you?
30

3. What systems do you own?
PS2, XBox, GC, DC, PSX, Saturn, PSP, DS, GBA, GBC, Game Gear, Jaguar, 3DO, N64, SNES, Master System, Genesis, Atari 2600, PC, NGPC, Zodiac Tapwave and probably one or two I forgot.

4. How many games do you buy per month?
Varies wildly. Bought 17 or so last month, will probably buy one or two this month.

5. Where do you usually buy your games?
Various places. New games at launch normally come from online shops. Older games and bargains I pick up wherever, often on the high street.

6. Do you usually buy your new games:
Some games on release, others when they hit budget price (or in an appropriate sale).

7. Do you finish most of your games?
Not as many as I used to.

8. On average, how long does it usually take you to finish your games?
1-2 weeks.

9. When you finish your games or no longer want to play them, do you:
Keep them all: I consider myself a games collector. Also I believe selling videogames to be actually evil and morally repugnant.

10. How do you get rid of your unwanted games?
There is no such thing as an unwanted game. I still own Eternal Eyes, damn it.

11. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 4 weeks old (Full price new release)?
Far less than the game's worth.

12. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 9 months old (E.g. Platinum title)?
Far less than the game's worth.

13. Have you ever traded in any games? (If yes, go to Q14, if no, go to Q17)

14. If so, how often?
Once in a lifetime.

15. Where do you usually trade in your games?
It was at GAME.

16. Why do you trade them in there? (Can select multiple)
I was young and foolish. But once you've made a decision like that you can never turn back. Never. :(

17. When you're finished with a game, do you trade it in (can select multiple):
When hell freezes over.

18. If not, why not?
Because it's my game. I might want to play it again. I might want to read the manual, caress the curves of the box...

Um. I just won't, right?

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?
I AM NOT ALLOWED TO ENLIGHTEN YOU, EVEN BY DEFAULT, ABOUT CURRENT TEMPERATURES IN THE NEXT WORLD.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?
No.

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?
I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I feel that it's morally repugnant, and that those who engage in game-trading are sick and evil, and should be excised from society. On the other hand, I do occasionally enjoy buying pre-owned games. I guess I just like to profit from the misery of others, and if that makes me a bad person then so be it.

22. Do you buy second-hand games? (If yes, go to Q20, if no, go to Q22)
Yes. Is this a deliberate attempt to force me into a recursive loop? Well it won't work. I'm going to Q23 and to hell with the instructions.

23. Where do you usually buy them from?
- eBay / forums / friends
- Retailers (Please specify)

A little from column A, a little from column B. I guess eBay and Gamestation have been my biggest sources.

24. Why do you buy them from there? (Can select multiple)
- Best prices
- Only place convenient that sells secondhand games
- Stocks older (retro) product

25. What is your opinion on buying second-hand game products?
It feels dirty, but oh so sweet...

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?
Half the full retail price.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?
Half the full retail price. Which is why I never buy new release games that have been traded in - the saving is so small that it makes more sense to buy it new instead.

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)?

Are you deaf? HALF THE FULL RETAIL PRICE.

EBGames or BestBuy

6. Do you usually buy your new games:
- On release
- Other: Free Review Copies

7. Do you finish most of your games?
No

8. On average, how long does it usually take you to finish your games?
- 1-2 months

9. When you finish your games or no longer want to play them, do you:
- Keep the good ones: I’ll come back to them one day

10. How do you get rid of your unwanted games?
- Trade in (e.g. at EBgames)

11. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 4 weeks old (Full price new release)? Probably about 50% to 75% of retail value.

12. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 9 months old (E.g. Platinum title)? $10 max

13. Have you ever traded in any games? (If yes, go to Q14, if no, go to Q17)
Yes

14. If so, how often?
- Every couple of months

15. Where do you usually trade in your games?
EBGames

16. Why do you trade them in there? (Can select multiple)
- Trade deals (bonus cash for trading in multiple titles)
- Convenience of location
- Good product selection to trade towards
- Good service / staff

17. When you're finished with a game, do you trade it in (can select multiple):
- I leave it until there's a new game I want

18. If not, why not?

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?
PS2 and GameCube for sure, thanks to backwards compatability, probably Xbox too.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?
Yes

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?
I'm not the biggest fan of the institution, but I do it anyway because I am usually strapped for cash to new games.

22. Do you buy second-hand games? (If yes, go to Q20, if no, go to Q22)
Rarely

23. Where do you usually buy them from?
- eBay / forums / friends

24. Why do you buy them from there? (Can select multiple)
- Stocks older (retro) product
- Good service / staff

25. What is your opinion on buying second-hand game products?
I hate the idea. Buying second-hand games means the developer of the game gets no money from it, which I am very much against. The only time I buy second-hand games is for games that are out of print or otherwise unattainable.

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?
For a recent game, I wouldn't buy used but I would say probably 50 to 60% of MSRP. For older games I would pay up to 200% of original MSRP, as most of them are collector's items.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?
If the game is $50 MSRP I think $40 would be fair.

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)?
$10 at the most.

Thanks again.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?
Isn't that how it already works? Maybe I didn't understand the question.

Depends on the game and how much time it's out. for an almost brand new? 40 seems fair.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)? 40$ or less

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)? 15$ or less

7. Yes
8. 2-4 weeks

13. Yes

24.
25. Because you can't count on the previous owner having treated it well, I don't take the chance. The stickers all over used game cases piss me off too.
26. Like 2/3 the full-price.
27. $35 (assuming full-price is $49)
28. $15

1. What country are you from?
USA

2. How old are you?
29... I'm getting too old for this.

3. What systems do you own?
I hate questions like these...

Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, XEGS, Lynx, Jaguar
Sega Master System, Genesis, 32X, CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, Nomad, Game Gear
Nintendo NES, SNES, N64, GC, GB, GBC, GBA, Virtual Boy

4. How many games do you buy per month?

- Keep them all: I consider myself a games collector

10. How do you get rid of your unwanted games?
Sell on eBay

11. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 4 weeks old (Full price new release)?
I'd -expect- to get back 30% of the full price... which is why I sell them on eBay.

12. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 9 months old?
20% of the used price?

13. Have you ever traded in any games? (If yes, go to Q14, if no, go to Q17)
Yes

14. If so, how often?
- All in one hit every year or so

15. Where do you usually trade in your games?
GameCrazy or EBGames -- it depends who has a weird deal.

16. Why do you trade them in there? (Can select multiple)
- Trade deals (Please specify)
I only trade in when a store has a really weird, wacky trade promotion going on. I generally buy really cheap games JUST to trade them in for a special promotion.

17. When you're finished with a game, do you trade it in (can select multiple):
- Other: Please specify
I don't trade it in.

18. If not, why not?
I don't feel like losing money by "trading in" games.

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?
No.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?
No.

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?
It's generally a stupid thing to do, due to the massive loss you take on each item versus the price the store sells used games for. However, I'm glad that OTHER people do it, or I'd never be able to get cheap used games.

22. Do you buy second-hand games? (If yes, go to Q20, if no, go to Q22)
Yes

23. Where do you usually buy them from?
eBay, GameCrazy, and EB

24. Why do you buy them from there? (Can select multiple)
GameCrazy -- good price and selection
EB -- using trade-in credit accumulated from wacky trade-in deals
eBay -- great selection and fair prices

25. What is your opinion on buying second-hand game products?
It's generally a good deal for older games. However, newer titles are always overpriced at game stores.

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?
50% of retail.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?
50% of retail.

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)?
50% of retail

1. What country are you from?
USA

2. How old are you?
24

3. What systems do you own?
NES, SNES, N64, GCN, GB, GBA, GBA SP, DS, Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, PSX (PS1, I mean), PS2, Xbox... I _think_ that's it, although I might own an Atari 2600, if that matters.

4. How many games do you buy per month?
2-3.

5. Where do you usually buy your games?
EB Games, Target, and to a lesser degree, Circuit City, Best Buy, Media Play, Meijer, and wherever CheapAssGamer points me to.

6. Do you usually buy your new games:
- When the game drops to platinum / mid price

7. Do you finish most of your games?
I sometimes get distracted and don't get back to them, but lately I've been trying to change that, so I'll say yes.

8. On average, how long does it usually take you to finish your games?
- 2-4 weeks

9. When you finish your games or no longer want to play them, do you:
- Keep them all: I consider myself a games collector

10. How do you get rid of your unwanted games?
- Sell on eBay / forums / to buddies

11. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 4 weeks old (Full price new release)?
$30

12. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 9 months old (E.g. Platinum title)?
$24

13. Have you ever traded in any games? (If yes, go to Q14, if no, go to Q17)
Yes, but just once that I can remember.

14. If so, how often?
- All in one hit every year or so

15. Where do you usually trade in your games?
Blockbuster

16. Why do you trade them in there? (Can select multiple)
- Trade deals (Please specify)
They have an "in demand" offer for more recent titles that I felt I got a good return from.

17. When you're finished with a game, do you trade it in (can select multiple):
- Other: Please specify
I only traded one in because I felt the GCN's versions controls were broken (Goldeneye: Rogue Agent), and I got it for free.

18. If not, why not?
Usually the payoff isn't worth losing something I've already invested in, and while I don't always revisit old games to simply replay them, I'm amused when Action Reply codes come out to find hidden things, like debug areas, unfinished objects, and so forth.

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?
I would've considered my Xbox if the 360's backwards compatibility were more solid, but hearing that they're going to start doing work-arounds for "hit titles" first means a lot of my more obscure purchases won't be emulated for years, if at all. So, no.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?
Again, I don't trade in much. That seems like the ideal, though, I suppose.

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?
Again, usually the payout doesn't make up for what you put in (and the result of "losing" that game, and having to repurchase it if you ever want it again for anything).

22. Do you buy second-hand games? (If yes, go to Q20, if no, go to Q22)
No.

25. What is your opinion on buying second-hand game products?
Fine for many people, but I'm just picky about case condition and such. I hate how EB Games opens the games before putting them on the shelves, and usually won't buy from them unless they have a sealed copy on hand.

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?
$25.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?
Assuming a $50 full price, and excellent condition of the trade in, I suppose $38.

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)?
$22.

1. What country are you from?

-USA.

2. How old are you?

-24 Years old.

3. What systems do you own?

-SNES (w/ Super 8 adaptor to play NES games)
-N64
-Game Cube (modded)
-Playstation 2 (Japanese)
-Playstation 2 (Slim model; modded)
-PSP (Japanese)
-XBox (modded)
-Neo-Geo AES (modded)
-Neo-Geo Pocket Color (Japanese new style)
-Sega CDX
-Sega 32X
-Sega Saturn (Japanese)
-Dreamcast (Japanese)
-Dreamcast (U.S.)
-Tapwave Zodiac 2

4. How many games do you buy per month?

-It really varies depending on the month, but on average 2-4 titles.

5. Where do you usually buy your games?

-Domestic games at EBgames, imports generally from NCS.

6. Do you usually buy your new games:
- On release
- In the first couple of months, still at full price
- When the game drops to platinum / mid price
- When the game drops to budget price
- Other: Please specify

-I'm generally an "impatient" gamer, so usually at release.

7. Do you finish most of your games?

-Many of the games I play are arcade titles meant to be replayed over and over with no real way to "finish" them (fighting games), but for many RPGs, action titles, etc., I'd have to say no. In the past it was because I was way too busy to spend hours with a game, but as a recent college graduate waiting to move onto a "real" job, I've had plenty of free time the past five months and have been beating games.

8. On average, how long does it usually take you to finish your games?
- First day
- First few days
- 1-2 weeks
- 2-4 weeks
- 1-2 months
- 2 months or more

-First few days.

9. When you finish your games or no longer want to play them, do you:
- Keep them all: I consider myself a games collector
- Keep the good ones: I’ll come back to them one day
- Keep the classics: I only hang onto the best
- Sell / trade them all in: I don’t play them again

-Keep the good ones, but really if a game is pure shit it doesn't get played and is promptly sold off.

10. How do you get rid of your unwanted games?
- Give away
- Sell on eBay / forums / to buddies
- Trade in (e.g. at EBgames)

-Trade in. I do a LOT of trading in.

11. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 4 weeks old (Full price new release)?

For console games, in the range of $20-$25. Portable systems between $10-$15.

12. How much would you expect to get back when trading in a game that is 9 months old (E.g. Platinum title)?

Around $5-$7. Platinum titles are the same thing as budget-priced titles and shouldn't be expected to be worth much.

13. Have you ever traded in any games? (If yes, go to Q14, if no, go to Q17)

-Yes.

14. If so, how often?
- Weekly
- Monthly
- Every couple of months
- Every few months
- All in one hit every year or so

-Probably every couple of months, but what happens is that I keep a small number of games in reserve to use in trade in deals in the busier release months.

15. Where do you usually trade in your games?

-EBgames and my own place of employment.

16. Why do you trade them in there? (Can select multiple)
- Best value for trades
- Trade deals (Please specify)
- Convenience of location
- Good product selection to trade towards
- Good service / staff
- Other: Please specify

-Best value for trade and trade deals (I.E. trade in three games and get an extra $10 plus $3 more for each game added on)

17. When you're finished with a game, do you trade it in (can select multiple):
- Straight away: Best to get the most credit for it.
- After I'm sure I don't want it: Sometimes I change my mind
- After a while: It seems a ripoff to trade things in so soon after release
- If a sequel or similar game comes out
- I leave it until there's a new game I want
- Other: Please specify

-AFter I'm sure I don't want it and/or when a sequel is released.

18. If not, why not?

19. Will you trade in your Gamecube / PS2 / Xbox for their successors?

-Not right away, as my systems are all modded, but if/when similar mods are released, these will all go.

20. If possible, would you trade things in as soon as you were done to get the best credit for items and then wait for a product you want to come out to use it?

-Yes.

21. What is your general opinion on trading in games?

-As someone who is on both sides of the counter, I think it can work well for both sides as long as the prices given are fair and that the games, including the manuls and boxes being traded, are in good condition. There are far too many instances of stores taking games in horrible condition, missing manuals, with ripped cases or no case at all, and then selling them for $5 less than the new version.

22. Do you buy second-hand games? (If yes, go to Q20, if no, go to Q22)

-Yes.

23. Where do you usually buy them from?
- eBay / forums / friends
- Retailers (Please specify)
- Other: Please specify

-Generally only from my own store.

24. Why do you buy them from there? (Can select multiple)
- Best prices
- Best range of current gen product
- Only place convenient that sells secondhand games
- Stocks older (retro) product
- Good service / staff
- Other: Please specify

-I buy them from my own store since I can personally check the condition and be sure the games work, as well as get a discount in the process.

25. What is your opinion on buying second-hand game products?

-If the game is in good condition and is priced at least $10-$15 lower than the new copy, I'm all for it. The problem is that far too many used games are overpriced and in terrible condition. I also hate it when retailers such as Gamestop and EBgames put several hard to remove stickers all over the cases and discs. Blockbuster especially is the worst.

26. What is the most you would pay for a traded game from a retailer (EG. EBgames / Gamestation)?

-$39.99.

27. What do you think is a fair price to pay for a new release game that has been traded in (e.g. still full price)?

-Assuming the game retailers for $49.99, $34.99-$39.99.

28. What do you think is a fair price for a platinum game that has been traded in (e.g. mid-priced)?

-$9.99-$14.99. My own store is notorious for pricing some of these titles at $17.99 or even $19.99, which I think is an absolute rip off.
