Prerendered CG should be extinct next gen.

Just on the level of suspension of disbelief, FMV really doesn't need to be around in next-gen games, IMO. It's too obvious 99% of the time that what you're watching is not what you've just been playing and drops the immersion factor.

That's not the point. If next-gen is so powerful, we shouldn't need kickass CG because the realtime stuff would be of the same or similar quality.

I don't think it will happen until next-next gen though, if even then.

I don't know why people assume CG would be sitting still and won't time improve as well, although I agree about the point about immersion factor.

Are you serious? I asked you about that and you didn't respond. :(

Heh she's really just reacting to a magic trick.

Yeah ... but all of that talk right now is because we haven't seen in-game from those games, so we're wondering, "Will the game look like that?"

Well we can go back to the current gen. When MGS2 was shown people couldn't tell the difference between the gameplay sequences and cutscenes. And accused the trailer of being all FMV. Companies will always be able to make better CG scenes than real time cutscenes even when that gen is able to keep up with the CG cutscenes they've done in a previous gen. There will always be CG cutscenes because of that. But they could start being cut down even in the games that feature them the heaviest because they're able to get a high level of detail in real time.

But companies will always be able to make better realtime cutscenes than they can in-game graphics. A trailer for Madden, even using replay footage, looks better than what Madden looks like when you're playing, and that's not even bumping the models or effects rendering quality like a lot of cutscenes do when they don't have to deal with interactivity processing.

Agreed that if they can and it makes fiscal and qualitative sense, go for it. And kudos for when it is realtime - those that are in the business or that follow technology respect that accomplishment. There's just this strange argument that we need to abolish CG, like it's the plague, like game companies need to prove something to the world other than that they can create an enjoyable interactive videogaming experience.

CG is just another tool for game makers to do their jobs and to make their art.
