What is it with this Arthur Gies guy? I followed him on Twitter for a while but he doesn't seem to be an asshole for the most part, except his pathetic performance on Twitter today of course. Is he like, really bad at what he does (games journalism) or something.
He's a boorish jackass on the podcast.

In my opinion, obviously.

No, he's good enough at what he does. He's just a jerk a lot more often than he needs to be.

Bitch about Arthur Gies, Rebel FM, and Polygon all you want, but this "donation-gate" stuff is pure nonsense. They used their donations on a way that has directly improved the podcast for more than two years, on a person who uses the donation in the best way possible.

The people who donated did so under the impression that the original 1UP FM would live on through Rebel FM. When the original "hosts" left, so did the spirit of the original podcast. So yeah, improved might not be the word you're looking for.

Well, I personally thought it was incredibly wrong to shit on GAF (something along the lines of I don't give a fuck about GAF) on the podcast after enjoying money (of which a huge sum came) from people on GAF. Especially since they kept mentioning how people should donate and stuff like that.

Only thing of his that I've read was his Lollipop Chainsaw review, which was more about him forcing his views on women in games on you than telling you about the game. So it was about as informative as any given Gamefaqs review, but proofread.

Arthur Gies.

Pretended.

To get a bloody tattoo.

To look cool.

In the trailer.

For the documentary.

For his video game website.

Cannot process.

Need many line.

Breaks.

Stop being so cynical.

This video is genuine and authentic to the core, not tirelessly poured over by a PR firm and advertising fluff men, not so heavily produced and cliched your eyes roll back in your head NOT brought to you by Internet Explorer® 'Explore the Possiblities'

OH NO!

I've listened to every episode, and still like it. If you donated to a podcast hosted by unemployed people looking for jobs expecting those people to always be around, it's your own fault for expecting an unrealistic outcome.

Tyler Barber, the guy who got the gaming PC in question, has done a fantastic job using that PC well. He's talked about everything from tons of Day Z, to tiny indie games found only on PC, to big-budget PC games that most might instead play on consoles, and more.

I'm not sure what else you expected a few thousand dollars in donations to be spent on, but whatever it was, it's probably as unreasonable as your expectation that it could somehow keep unemployed people from exploring opportunities outside of San Francisco instead of staying there so they could be on the podcast.

A Giant Bomb documentary would be cool...
Yes, I would watch this. Especially if it came from someone outside the site and wasn't just promo material. It would explore the darker side of GB, leave no skeletons in the closet.

Behind the Website: Giant Bomb

Drugs, anonymous groupie sex, rampages fueled by days of binges, Vinnie's spiraling gambling addiction, and Brad's former life as a prostitute.

the whole rebel fm thing was such a mess. after nick and phil left and it became something different the best thing would have been for them to donate the surplus money to childsplay or something but if they were going to use the greedy option and run with the opportunity given to them then the pc purchase is a perfectly legitimate thing that did help the podcast, as galling as it is to see a random friend of anthony's get nick and phil's sympathy money for awesome free shit.

BLOODY TATTOO SO REAL

So bad...for so many reasons. He's trying so hard, it's embarrassing to watch.

I'm pretty fucking livid right now, I donated $75 to them as well. What a fucking mistake. If you see this Arthur: fuck you. I hate Polygon's layout anyway, but I will straight up not have anything to do with that site or ever go there as long as he is on staff, I don't care how petty it is or not.

It's not petty at all. He stole your money through misappropriation. It's despicable and it shouldn't matter how long ago it was.

I just filed a report, now I'm going to meet a client for lunch.

Expect the 42-part documentary in 6-8 months.

So wait, now we're claiming that anonymous donations to unemployed people working on a gaming podcast that anyone with a brain knows could leave for a job across the country at any moment, and those donations being used to directly improve the podcast for the people left, is "stealing" and "misappropriation"?

Even if Phil and Nick were still there, they could have transformed the podcast into something you hated over time. Or they could have just stopped doing the podcast altogether instead of finding another group of people to do it after they found jobs in other states. Regardless, your donation, your risk.

Instead of letting the donations just sit there unused, they decided to use a small part of them on a gaming PC for someone who couldn't afford one, and who went on to literally talk about PC games he's played on it for hundreds of hours.

You might not like it, but tough shit - it's not "stealing" or "misappropriation" either.

Maybe this is all just a subversive advertising campaign to make us realize how much we appreciate Giant Bomb's style and approach. Because that is basically all that video and this thread did for me.

I dont want to be mean, but I did see a lot of this coming because a lot of those guys at Polygon really are far too pleased with themselves. Gies throws out the most incendiary opinions as if they are fact on a regular basis on Rebel FM and ridicules anyone who does the same back at him. Justin McElroy and the rest of the Besties crew are so amused with themselves that they literally dont bother to prepare for their podcast as most of them cant be bothered to find ONE damn game a week on a regular basis they want to actually talk about. Instead they they are so amused with themselves that they think lots of people will just want to listen to them literally joke about how bad they are week after week.

I do feel sorry for Phil Kollar. He is a very down to earth and humble guy and I appreciate that he isnt afraid to break with consensus amd champion oddities. He left a solid job at Game Informer to work at Polygon. As soon as I heard him announce it on the GI podcast, I was worried for him. Not to mention that GI and their weekly podcast isnt the same without him. Really miss his work there.

Same for Griffin McElroy and his gig at Joystiq. I like him quite a bit for the same reasons. He's usually the straight man to Justin's vaudeville giggle fest and I get his taste in games. They match up a lot with my own. The joystiq podcast is barely worth listening to now without the dynamic of the McElroys and Kietzman. It was a fantastic show before.

But man, the rest of those guys, at least the ones I know.., yeah this trailer seems exactly like something they would make and they deserve the ridicule they are getting. Brian Crecente's phoney moral high horse about Saint's Row, Gies obnoxious unqualified opinions about everything, Russ Frushtick's terrible attempts at humor, and Justin's endless amusement at how bad The Besties is. This group deserves each other. They are all smart people. That is not enough, however.

Yeah, dude, the donations were to keep the podcast running. Using it to buy someone a computer for personal use is a perfect example of misappropriation.

Rebel FM took donations from people. They got a lot more donations than they could possibly spend on stuff directly related to producing a podcast.

So they used a small amount of it to buy a gaming PC for someone who's been on literally 100+ episodes of the podcast, who couldn't afford the PC for himself, and has directly used that PC to talk about games played on that PC on almost every single one of those 100+ episodes.

That maybe would have been acceptable if they had been up front about it, but up until a few months ago (I'm behind on Rebel FM) this was the first I had ever heard about this, and IIRC that PC was built what, like maybe 2 or 3 years ago at this point? And even in that case if they really have THAT much more than they need for possible future equipment and hosting costs for basically forever, they could have donated it to one of the charities that they do things for once or twice a year. Or used it to buy shit to maybe give away to listeners in contests. Or any of a million other things.
