Pressing "NO TIP" when paying your barber is one of the most awkward interactions

Gotta say I had no idea this is a things.
Tipping is costumery here for waiters and such, but I've never heard of it applys to barbers as well.
 
Wow OP.

I'm British and even I tip after a haircut.

Mainly because I view it as a far more personal service than being given a glass of water.
 
OP, what were you hoping to get out of a thread like this? GAF generally does take kindly to people who shit on the working man.

To add to this tipping in the Netherlands is only common in very good restaurants anything else is nearly no tip needed.

Once tipped a tattoo artist and he looked strange at me lol.

About barbers well the last time i let a barber do my hair is a few years ago no tips there also. I cut my own hair now yeah the first time went wrong (a simple buzzcut fixed that) but it's pretty easy now.

But yeah the tipping culture is not big here. You pay the amount required with a bank card/cash and done.
 
I get a haircut, hot shave, and a beard trim for 23 USD.

I too that dude 20 because he's awesome and I like my hair not being fucked. He uses square as well because no one carries cash.

I get my hair cut in places where I usually get charged around 18 bucks for a cut and I'll round it up to around 25 for the rest to go to the stylist. I'd probably tip a little more if I had a regular barber I requested to see to make sure the rapport is there and know that I'm getting a good cut.

Not tipping a barber is worse than not tipping a server at a restaurant.
 
Tipping a barber/beautician is probably one of the more sane things to tip for. I had a barber once who would wash my hair before cutting it (was more like a head massage). Surely that's going above and beyond, plus they're using additional product. The least I can do is throw them five bucks to bring it up to 20.
 
Tips are already a pretty standard thing at a salon or barber. I've tipped every single time I've ever gotten my hair cut, even at a chain place. You're not accomplishing anything by not tipping.
 
Good old Australia. Flat $20 for a haircut. No tipping.

Edit: although, it does seem pretty sketchy to not tip if you live in that culture :P But who am I to judge?

Yeah, the first time I went to the barber my mom made sure I knew that the barber had to be tipped.
 
If you tip any restaurant person and not tip a hair stylist... a person who is using an actual skill to make you not look like shit you should get fucked. That is my view on the matter.
 
I guess I'm lucky I'm not expected to tip for every service. Moving from a country that doesn't have to tip to a country that tips for so many things would drive me insane.
 
You know why it's awkward? That ingrained shame is fucking with you because you know you're being a real piece of shit in public, for everyone to see. And this herd shame is deserved for your obvious oblivion to human decency in your current society.

Reading this thread, it seems lots of people are afraid that not tipping will end up getting them a bad haircut next time. I don't think a tip should come from being afraid, but because you appreciate someone's work and service.

That said, tipping is not very big where I come from, especially not for barbers who also never ask for a tip and certainly don't expect it. I see my returning patronage as an expression of my appreciation of their services.
 
I tip my barber 50% of the bill and I go weekly.

You can always tell when someone's going through that phase in their life when they think they've figured out everything that's wrong with the world. Dude is probably sitting in the quad waxing philosophic about the evils of GMOs or some shit.
 
Yup I go see my wives friend who has a salon in her basement and I always tip too. My parents always made sure to tip hairdressers/barbers when I was younger as well.
 
Tipping barber's is among those most required in the US.

THEY HAVE SCISSORS CLOSE TO YOUR HEAD WHY WOULD YOU NOT TIP THEM

You're exactly right. Tipping is like a microcosm of American financial culture. Nobody likes how the financial system works, but it's fine as long as everyone's experience is equally shitty because we have "economic mobility" for those that "really work hard for it". Instead of everyone coming together to make it less shitty (like disallowing companies from paying their workers below minimum wage forcing them to live off tips) , instead we just give up and pay these companies their blood money and shame those who don't because the only one it actually hurts is the person who doesn't get a tip.

Corporate blame deflection at it's finest.

That being said, I do still tip where necessary. I used to be more stingy with the percentage when I had no money in college, but now I don't care as much. Sometimes you just have to play the game. I implore everyone in the service industry to demand a living wage, because this system is trash.

Now if you don't mind I'm going to sit back and watch a classic Gaf tipping thread unflold.
 
If the OP had been about how there's still a tip line when you pick up a carry-out order I would have totally understood that. But tipping your barber/hair stylist? That's kind of a given in the states.
 
Basically, any time I'm trusting someone with sharp things around my head, I tip them if they do a good job.

We can wax poetic on the necessity of tips... but not tipping right now doesn't actually solve that problem.
 
Do barbers get paid waitress-tier wages or something and that's why they should be tipped?

I always tip my barber fairly well because my hair is a pain
 
I can totally understand Europeans being confused about tipping or thinking it's stupid.
But those of you who think the solution is to screw the person who needs the tip are as bad as the OP.

That a ridiculous policy. Hair cutters deserve a bigger tip than food servers.

I happily tip $5 on a $15 haircut (33%), and I grew up in a country with no tipping on anything.
 
Woah, really putting a wrench in the machine there OP! Your barber will certainly draw the conclusion of "Ah yes, another patron who is simply doing their part to counteract the ugly capitalist practice of 'tipping culture'; for that I surely can not hold a grudge or ill-will against them. Godspeed!"

If anything I'd say cutting your hair is one of a few services that actually should be customarily tipped; it's personal, deliberate and requires quite a bit more time and attention than remembering that you exist and your order for maybe 2-3 minutes.
 
Awkward, but apparently not akward enough to tip. Op I can guarantee you everyone in that barbershop hates you not only for not tipping but also for rushing out of there with your tail between your legs. My barber charges $25 and I tip him $10
 
I'm always amazed at how so many people are taught to believe they're tipping because they're good people instead of being shamed by everyone to do it. Like, I'm 100% sure folks wouldn't tip if people didn't make a stink about it even though those same folks tip because they don't want to make a stink about it.

All this comes down to is industries playing on a customer's fear of being shamed or insulted.

Is this true? People say tip irregardless of service (unless it's down right atrocious) so standard, default, the bare minimum service still receives a tip. It's these pretty little lies that make us feel better but we're just playing ourselves. Think of it like mass bystander effect where no one wants to say something due to fear of being met with shame. I know that's not what bystander is but you get the point.

Sure, it helps folks who make minimum wage but let's not act like we're saints because we tip.
