Prey (2017) |OT| Trust no one. Not even your shelf

The hacking minigame is so weird lol. I don't think I've ever actually enjoyed hacking minigames, but this one at least seems tolerable.

Nah. It's not a literal reference to the game but just a play on words; an alteration of the meme "Trust no one, not even yourself" so it acts as a nod to the fact that the mimics in the game can assume the form of inanimate objects.

Edit: I'm slow.

Don't listen to this guy.

Keep an eye on every shelf. You just never know.

It's certainly possible that Valve maintains a blacklist of frequently-used VPN IPs considering how far it has gone to discourage the VPN-assisted activation of gifts. Have you tried other services? FlyVPN's 20-minute session limit may be too short a window given how slow the free servers are, however there are a wealth of Asian servers on VPN Gate and VyprVPN is very solid (just remember to cancel your free trial within 72 hours so you're not charged).

Oh man, that really might have been the problem. I just tried one of the OpenVPN config files from VPN Gate, changed my password and it's finally unlocking. Thank you! :)

According to a current player's post in the PC Performance thread, there are no HUD options like objective markers etc.

There's also a screenshot posted in response that perfectly illustrates the stupidity of this. A dark-ass room you're exploring with a giant white marker in the middle with your objective's name and (XXm) distance below it. Just fucking no guys...please hopefully they patch in options to remove this. The game is about exploration.

And yeah, even Dishonored 1 letting you disable each HUD segment on its own basically made me think this was kind of a no-brainer for this game.

Well this is extremely disappointing.

Quoting it from PC Performance thread (Since there's no FoV slider atm):
Fov can be edited under C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\Arkane Studios\Prey game.cfg

My was set to 101 by default I'm playing at 21:9 and it runs flawlessly on max settings with a 1070 and 6600k

I think you can turn off objective markers for current missions by unchecking them in your quest log, but they may get reactivated with new ones.

But yeah I expected options there from Arkane.

I just played the demo and kind of liked it. The controls were sluggish though but I've heard they're aware of this and it has been patched(?). I also thought the mimics hit pretty hard, even on normal. I'll pick this up when it's cheaper.

Btw, for those who want to play the game early on Steam, here's an instruction from JaseC:

To unlock the game early via VPN:

1) Log out of the Steam mobile app and change your password via the the desktop client
1) Download and install FlyVPN (20-minute session limit), TunnelBear (500MB data limit), VPN Gate (no hard limits) or VyprVPN (no hard limits, but remember to cancel within 72 hours)
3) Connect to a server in Australia, New Zealand or Asia
4) Restart Steam (if you're logged in)
5) Unlock the game
6, optional) Switch to Offline Mode to preserve the "Play" button as it will revert back to "Pre-load" once you're no longer connected to the VPN (even if you disconnect mid-game, you won't be booted out)

VPN Gate is preferable, assuming there's a relevant server available.

Played a couple of hours, really enjoying it so far. I've never played either System Shocks, but I'm definitely getting huge Bioshock vibes. Not regretting getting it at all.

Can't wait to play all night tomorrow!

I put up with it in the demo because I just kind of assumed there'd be HUD options because of both Dishonored games but alas...

I don't have Twitter, otherwise I'd be bombing their shit with a request for HUD options, although I'm not sure how easy that is to add or not of course haha.

My 180 on it was so hard, I was actually going to buy it this weekend already but I think this nudged me into 'wait for next few weeks' patches to see if it changes' territory. It's one thing to have them but to not have the option to turn them off is fucking weird to me in a game like this.

was actually going to pick this up without playing the demo, but seeing the achievement list really bummed me out of paying full price. I hate when single player games have shitty numerous playthrough achievements.

The first couple of hours definitely gave me a BioShock/Deus Ex vibe. Not really enjoying the enemies but discovering locations inside the space station has been a lot of fun so far.

Yeah, same here. Markers are a deal breaker for me in a game like this.

Who knows, maybe they'll patch in the option to play without them later on.

You hate it when achievements encourage replayability?

Maybe one of our nice fellow GAFers could drop them a line about this on Twitter, that'd be splendid. It doesn't help that the markers are fairly large in size, say how close you are and are glaringly white ha.

I hate when they force me to replay the game for false "completion" with arbitrary records. If I want to kill just 1 human on my first, natural playthrough I am locked out of two achievements that will result in my "completion" resulting in 1 natural playthrough and 2 where I am forced into decisions I don't want to make.. and that's just the killing achievements.

do I need to get the perk to upgrade weapons or can I do it at stations or something like that without the perk?

also, the perks look really boring, I hope there are some interesting powers later

They're achievements, they're meant to provide a challenge. You shouldn't be able to get all the achievements just by completing the game.

Then again you could also just completely ignore them considering they're basically pointless. There hardly forcing you to do anything.

I mean, they're false "completion" with arbitrary records in their core, wouldn't you rather argue that you don't care for achievements at all? And if so, why the hell would you care?

I love achievements, I just don't like ones that force you to play the games un-naturally, what's hard to understand about that?

The whole point of achievements is that they challenge you to go beyond what you would do normally when just playing the game.

They're achievements. Not participation awards.

There are literally achievements for pressing start in games. Prey itself has achievements simply for progressing through the story. If you honestly believe that all trophies or achievements are REAL achievements then you have a low bar for success. Killing all humans in Prey is not an 'achievement'. It is not difficult to achieve. It is not something to brag about. It's just a way they force shitty replayability into their game so you don't trade it after you beat it in your first weekend. And I don't like that.

So basically you're annoyed they're called achievements? We should think of a better name, like successes or actions or things to do

Are achievements in games something people brag about?

And how do you know how difficulty or not killing all humans is? Considering it's an immersive sim, for all we know, starting to kill humans could change the game and make it more challenging or force you to think of different tactics and strategies to complete objectives because you won't have human allies

Glad the PC version is fine.

Does the PS4 version feel better to play than the demo? That's the one I'd get to chat with friends and shit.

any ETA for the "hardcore mode" dlc/patch?
They want people to presumably finish the game, and those things they took out seem quite significant so gonna be a few months probably. Plus, they haven't officially confirmed it so it's just a possibility right now.
