Prey (2017) |OT| Trust no one. Not even your shelf

Don't get me wrong Horizon was an amazing game in it's own right. However, Prey now stands as my current GOTY, I would even say it's now in my top 10 games of all time.

Everything about Prey is just done right (in my opinion). The atmosphere, the story, the exploration, venturing down hallways and always finding something to do, the Talos 1 space station design, the alien design, the in-game sounds, the side missions, the audio logs, the notes, the inventory management, recycling, fabrication.... I just fucking love it, all of it Bioshock, System Shock, Alien Isolation and Dead Space are some of my all time favorites, and to me Prey has all the qualities that makes these games so great :)

I'm hoping sales are good so we can see another game in the future.

Well you sold me.. I'll be picking it up this weekend

You won't be disappointed. Just keep in mind some think the games starts a bit slow, and it sort of does, but I think the pacing is actually great. The slow moments are there for a reason.

My wife says the game is terrible to watch, lol. I can see why too, because I spend hours reading emails and exploring with no dialogue at all. The environment is just that good.

I think that stuff was patched in later with Dishonored, so there is a chance they will do the same with Prey.

I played Dishonored 2 at launch on PS4 and even that had insane HUD options going on relatively speaking. I'm not 100% on the first Dishonored, though.

Which one?

Escape Attempt. At this point I don't want anyone/anything getting off the station. He said something about if I didn't open the hatch first I could blow him up so I'm going to go back and figure out if I can do that probably, although I might just leave them in there. The actual quest marker/text though just leads to the external hatch.

Just fyi for ppl looking for the dead drops. The regular alarms are just the red bells. The ones with a drop have a glowing red light directly above the alarm.

I suppose it makes sense
since you can get beat the game with out Typhon abilities. The scope just tells you weaknesses and unlocks abilities.

I really wish their were detailed HUD options to tinker with. Dishonored had an insane amount of fidelity and I'm disappointed Prey does not. It would really help the immersive sim in it to not just be marking waypoints constantly.

It was confirmed on Twitter by one of the folks involved (sorry forgot his name) that HUD options will be coming. No ETA was given however.

The rooms with the broken doors seemily have no way into them. Please don't tell me I need mimic powers to get past them. I'm doing a no mimic run for my first run but also want to discover everything.

Am I missing something?

How exactly can you see what the ID number of a bracelet is?

I'm at this terminal in Deep Storage - Command center.

There's no quest for this, but I wonder what it's for.

I'm doing a no power run and have found my way into every room except one, all that I've seen so far had an alternative route in (maintenance hatch etc). Other than the one that is, and I'm assuming I just haven't figured that out yet.

Its for a couple of quests, and they tell you how to use it. No use until you have them as far as I know.

Looks like you missed it, since you are in Guts.
When you enter Psytronics
you need to go down into the hole in the woman's(?) bathroom. There you will find the scope to scan Typhon and gain abilities.

Oh. I am literally right there. I saved just before hopping down there and went to bed last night. Cool.

I might be a little confused about my location. I distinctly remember moving into an area called guts but perhaps i was only in there long enough to not move forward until I went to psytronics.

Thanks :)

Excellent. Some rooms seem impossible to enter right now, but I'm sure I'll work it out.

Ah yes, good to know. I've explored this whole area and there are several unpowered doors too but I assume I need to go back here later on. I mean the area with the data vaults and kiosk.

mimic, psychoshock, mindjack, robo mindjack

After getting psychoshock, I regret putting extra points into the regular kinetic blast power as I never use it anymore. Is there any point in getting Mimic past level 1? I just use it for getting through blocked doors.

it might be fun to kill typons as turrets, but I never had to do that because fully upgrades weapons + psychoshock kill anything easily anway, so I just kept mimic at level 1 and only used it for utility like you.

Optional quest: Disgruntled Employee

I need to
Locate Grant Lockwood and he's somewhere in Talos 1 exterior. Been flying around here for a while now and can't seem to find him?

Oh and I need to go back to the Neuromod Division for a optional quest. Wasn't it said that some people run into a bug here that prevents completion of the quest? Hope I don't get that.

Use a security or information terminal to track him, he's a long way from the station

Where can I check to see if the Xbox one version has been patched? I want to finish this game, yet I don't want to boot it up daily to see of the glitch is fixed.

Explored the shuttle bay tonight, havent gone to Psytronics yet... that enemy at the start was a tad frustrating just cause he was so loud and i didnt feel like i should be attempting to fight it yet.

So what is the verdict for consoles ? Passable ? Graphics are poor? Input lag ? I have both ps4 and Xbox one , should I wait for a price drop due to inferior port compared to PC ?

I... can't tell whether something is off/buggy with the scripting or the game is just letting me wander into places in directions that are way off.

I guess I'm half-way maybe a bit more? Question regarding the appearance of a certain enemy type:
So I got my first quick spook by the nightmare as I got into Arboretum and I did all the stuff I could there and got the objective to go to Crew Quarters.
Now before I go there, I wanted to pop back in the lobby and hit up hardware labs again and also get the elevator sorted out. I went down the elevator and the nightmare is prowling about there just happenstance. Is... that supposed to be an intended scenario?

I think what's throwing me off is that I listened a bit to the waypoint podcast and Patrick Klepek was saying how he had a bug that had the nightmare just pop up in an unintended way and that the actual exposition for the creature was later on and I'm confused on what's going on in my end.

I feel like that's how it is for everyone--not necessarily your specific situation, but the general sense of
oh shit what is this thing I don't know anything about it fuck it's going to murder me oh god
. I don't know if
Klepek has a source for that being a bug, but honestly it seems quite intentional to me.

I don't really think I've had exposition for any enemy type so far outside of the first two that January narrates. I had a very similar introduction to Nightmares to you as far as my first two encounters with them for what that's worth. I do know that at one point there was a bug where they didn't stalk the player as intended which has since been patched, but that's the only Nightmare bug that came up when I googled it. I'm a long ways in and there hasn't been any explanation or origin story for at least 5-6 enemy types now. They just started appearing as the Typhon increased in power. I don't think the crew knew about anything beyond Mimics, Phantoms, and Weavers (in fact, they reference the Weaver as being a singular so I'm not even sure they knew much about them).

Just booted up the PS4 version with the new patch from today, and the input lag is fixed. Night-and-day difference. It was literally my only complaint with the game.

Here are my thoughts.

There's a lot to like, but I just got bored with the plot. Exploration for the sake of exploration didn't work for me here.

Can't say I agree with the criticisms, I feel like exploration has its purpose with a number of side quests you can find and the little stories you can read about the people in Talos 1. The plot is better than Dishonored games, though that isn't much of a high bar if you ask me

Also, the patch should be out on PS4 now and later on in XB1. From what I've heard, it fixes the input lag

Totally fair. I just didn't find those quests and stories worthwhile. Too many logs and emails, not enough face-to-face, grounded narrative moments.

Thanks for checking it out!

BioShock Infinite is like playing some homeless guy's vivid imagination
Anyone playing this on Nightmare first time through? Wondering if it's worth doing.

How far am I roughly? I feel like I'm playing terribly slowly, but I don't mind because I am loving this title.

just traveling up the gut toward the arboretum for the first time]

1.02 has been released on PS4, and it fixes the input lag. Just played it and it's so much better.
Been waiting for this! I played 5 minutes of the demo before putting it down thinking "this game plays like shit." Then I saw that it was an issue that was being worked on, and heard tons of awesome impressions on a ton of podcasts. Def interesting in picking it up now

Don't know how much of it is placebo, but the new patch for PS4 does seem to have improved the latency a lot. Either way, feels good, and it's great to see the patch after me doubting they would even be able to improve it!

On the negative side, to me it seems the new patch introduced some judder. On 1.01, I feel like G.U.T.S and Arbotetum were smooth, but running around those areas post-patch seems worse, somehow.

Douchebag. Yes, me.

Noticed this as well. Personally I'll take judder over the horrendous input lag the game had before.

Anyone know how to play Prey without Steam on PC? or how to play it without it updating?

I wanna mess around on Prey version 1.0 since I already beat the game.

I tried to just launch it with steam closed, but it is giving me a error due to steamAPI.

If i launch it from steam, it'll just auto update

<Nvm> Changed it to update on start, and went into offline mode.
