printing on w10

Updates like to fuck up things.
Also, if you don't have a printer connected when you press print in one of your programms like Open office etc, it will default to sending all printing stuff to microsoft one note. Even if you connect a printer afterwards and install drivers it will still default to printing through one note. It's a royal pain in the ass to remove it.
The point is, don't try to print if you accidentally disconnected your printers usb cable.

Yeah I was thinking about doing that. My next step is to undeploy the printers for that department, destroy the GPO deploying them, then recreate it and redeploy the printers. Will take all of 15 minutes after hours and tomorrow morning I'll know if it the GPO just got corrupted or something.

Printing is such a nightmare in Windows 10. Maybe a dumb question but have you uninstalled and reinstalled your printer drivers? Works about 1/4th of the time for me when this sorta thing happens

Edit: my reading comprehenson could really use some work, disregard

This is why you should have a spare Windows 95 PC lying around, to do all the things the new modern OS with a development staff of thousands of people cannot figure out. Like printing.

Make sure samba/smb1 service is active and working. 2004 tends to break this for some reason. If your printer is no longer supported by Windows 10 you may have to install it in another PC and then create a network share.

Well there's PCL5, PCL6, PCL6_v4 Universal, Postscript, Postscript_v4 Universal Postscript... fuck printers entirely, no matter the platform. Generally speaking the Universal will give you the least amount of trouble, except for the occasional 3-page PDF printing 180 pages of garbage.

Don't even get me started on plotters. Fuck Design & Production and their CAD printout nightmares.

Printers are the work of the devil and every single one should be buried under a 16 ton weight. Throw fax machines in there too.

When we rolled out win10 we had nothing but printer problems. Printers disappearing, drivers not saving, multiple copies of printers appearing for no apparent reason...none of it happened when we were on 7. dealing with printers on 10 is just a necessary evil. I've found that completely deleting the drivers from the local machine (run>printmanagement.msc) fixes it for a while until it inexplicably breaks again

Make sure that in the printer settings window that you don't have the box checked at the bottom to "Let Windows manage my default printer"
