Following the appearance of Pro Evolution Soccer 5 for PSP on a release schedule issued by Atari Australia, which publishes the PES games over there, Konami has confirmed to Eurogamer that the series is indeed going portable.

But only on Sony's handheld, apparently - there are no plans to produce a version for the Nintendo DS at present.

Which seems a little odd, since Winning Eleven was on a list of DS games in development released by Nintendo last summer. Hmm...

Konami producer Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka discussed PES for PSP back in October, also revealing that PlayStation 2 owners may be able to go online with the fifth instalment in the series.

This has yet to be confirmed, as does a release date for PES5. However, Play.com is already taking pre-orders, suggesting it'll be marching onto the pitch come October 28. PES games are traditionally released around this time, so it seems like a reasonable estimate.

In other PES news, Konami has signed England and Chelsea defender John Terry to promote the series.

"I've been a massive fan of Pro Evolution Soccer for years now and am really pleased to be able to work with the talented people behind such a fantastic game," said Terry, clutching his bag of shiny new pound coins.

"It's the game of choice for lots of players as it is so true to the real thing. I'm looking forward to getting involved - and getting to play advance versions on the way!" Jolly good.

More on PES5 as soon as we get it.

Well, it's nice to have confirmation that it will be coming out at least. Still as excited about it as ever.

bye bye DS in Japan..

it had a good run

Not if Pokemon Unlimited Deluxe Super Last Final Blue Yellow Polka Dotted with Three 1/2 new monsters and one new animation has anything to say about it!

But seriously, I know you're being sarcastic but just for emphasis DS ain't goin' no where in Japan. Its future lineup is ridiciulously powerful and super heavy with popular Japanese franchises.

Maybe PES for DS isn't a version of PES5... it was definately on forthcoming release lists though. It was even listed as one of the online titles in development on Nintendo.com last month.

maybe I was sarcastic, but this will sell ALOT of PSPs

WE >>>>> Pokemon

they release an average of 2 titles a year and they always sell around/morethan a mil

I don't want to start a new thread so I ask here:

What is the difference between the Pro Evolution and Winning Eleven series? I see Pro Evolution 4 and Winning Eleven 9 from Konami and I don't know the difference.

Winning Eleven in US, Pro Evolution in Europe. ;)

But it's Pro Evolution 4 and Winning Eleven 9! Ahh forget it I'm confusing myself! :lol I'm guessing Europe didn't get the Winning Eleven games right away? While NA just carried over the name from the Japan version? Because I know NA didn't get as many WE soccer games as other parts of the country.

I would give my left nut for the DS version to be an update of ISS98. I still think it's the most enjoyable game of football out there. There's very much room for both games though, depends what kind of a mood you're in.

It's actually quite confusing so hold on:

Japan: Winning Eleven (2-3 versions a year)

Europe: Pro Evolution Soccer (1 version a year - usually based on the first or last version of Japan's Winning Eleven of that year)

US: Winning Eleven International (1 version a year - based on Europe's Pro Evolution Soccer)

The game is usually tweaked a little from the Japanese edition to the European edition in terms of pace etc.

The current versions are:

Japan: Winning Eleven 8 (oldest), Winning Eleven 8 Liveware Evolution (newest)
Europe: Pro Evolution Soccer 4 (Based on Japan's oldest Winning Eleven 8)
US: Winning Eleven 8 International (Based on Europe's Pro Evolution Soccer 4)

The "Pro Evolution Soccer" brand didn't start in Europe until the PS2 versions of Winning Eleven were released though. Before that they used "International Superstar Soccer Pro/Deluxe/98/whatever" instead. Although I recall the ISS games not consistently being developed by the same dev team...I think the N64 games were made by some other dev team...correct me if I'm wrong.

Not sure if they were created by another team, but they certainly had a differend brand.

J League Perfect Striker was their title, I believe.

Yeah they used to be called ISS over here in Europe not sure about Japan or US.

KCEO and KCET developed them

I think the N64 version was developed by KCEO and the PSX versions by KCET (but I could be wrong)

I also seem to remember one of the PSX versions supporting widescreen (16x9) play although I could have been imagining this but it NEEDS to be added to the next versions :)

ISS (international superstar soccer) was the title in the states as well. In japan it was JLPS.

It'll run like shit I bet. As much as I am a lover of WE, I can imagine the frame-rate issues with this sucker already.. unless they just port first PES to PSP :P

yeah that's what i'm afriad of as well.. the ps2-version is so freaking annoying with it's loadtimes and slowdowns. i bought the xbox version after i was so let down, but the controll does not work as good as the dual shock 2. still, the game runs much better on the xbox.

still picking it up for PS2 though, since all my friends have the ps2-version. i'm a edit freak and can't stand incorrect rosters/teams, so therefore it's better if we play with my file :D

plus i have a max drive for ps2, so it's easy to get complete option files from pesfan.com.

Yes for some reason since WE7 the PS2 version has had slowdown issues especially when the camera is set to wide.

There might also be problems with the controls due to the lack of L2 and R2 buttons which the XBox version also suffers from (the black and white buttons just don't work as substitutes)

The Winning Eleven series has gone as far as it can on current hardware so the versions I'm looking forward to most are Winning Eleven 9 on X360 and Winning Eleven 10 on PS3

In 720p and 1080p please Konami :D

I'm sure the DS will still get a Winning Eleven. But since they won't be able to get very close to WE9, it might be WEDS and necessarily play differently (worse). This is what I've expected, at least. The PSP version will be pretty close to WE9, but just with less animation and functionality, I guess. I don't expect it to be as good an experience.

Anyway, this is akin to confirming Mario and Zelda Revolution.

Why are you assuming it will run like shit? I mean, it doesn't exactly say they'll do a straight port of the PS2 version...obviously they're going to downgrade and optimize it for PSP.
And since the PSP and PS2 aren't really the same I don't think one can draw conclusions about how good the game will run based on the PS2 version. I just hope they make it locked @ 60 fps, with simple character models/environments if needed.

PES3 in the UK had slow down issues. This was caused by DVD access to pull off sound samples for crowd noise.

To remove the slow down you needed to set the crowd attendance option to low and neutral.

Alternatively you can run the game from a Hard Drive and remove the slow down and speed up the load times.

PES4 runs a full height back buffer, but Konami have not added the Prog Scan option. This is another game where the Blaze VGA adapter allows you to hack the prog scan mode. The game looks a look crisper in 480p mode.
