I dont want it to be like Castlevania at all.

The reason I asked that question was because insiders seem to be pegging this game as a cross between castlevania and demon souls. Also not sure if it is because of the player but this game seems more offense based than defense based unlike Demon Souls. Maybe its too early to make any of these conclusions. I am hyped either ways.

Looked at the footage and that looks like a Dark Souls-type game. Not surprising I guess.

But is all the 22 pages of hype just because it is From Software and the promise of more Dark Soulish gameplay, or is there something I am missing?

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like the previous three Souls games. I assume the hype is because it's a Sony exclusive. Kind of reminds me I haven't played DS2 yet as after the first two I can't muster the same enthusiasm. Really wish From and Sony had made a 4 player co op game through medieval Japan.

That would be a major blow. I'll won't play it then.

Ah, well, if the previous Miyazaki-directed Souls games are any indication, you will probably be missing out. I ended up buying a PS3 just to play Demon's Souls way back when, and I never regretted it one bit.

Though if you're patient, I suppose it is always wise to wait until later in a console's life cycle to purchase, as the cost will most likely drop significantly by then (plus the library will increase).

Souls games were already similar to Castlevania games in many ways IMO, in which ways do you think could they be more alike?

edit: also I don't see how this seems more offense based, when fighting a group of enemies he had to dodge backwards to get off an attack safely, and from what I could tell he was locked into place after using the shotgun for a short time.

I hope they'll have some sort of limited edition PS4 to coincide with the game's release, or some sort of bundle at the very least. PLEASE make it happen.

Opinions should be voiced in a civilized manner, i agree. Vicious ranting is never useful, or fun for that matter.
I do disagree with one thing though - opinions are neither right or wrong, nor should they be held to that. They just reflect an subjective view on a certain matter.
Nope. Some things are true and some things are wrong, and usually opinions that are based on false assumptions and consist of incorrect arguments (there's plenty of theory for that, I'm talking about exact mathematics) are usually wrong: for example, almost nothing in science is an opinion, and absolutely nothing in exact sciences is an opinion. Rational thinking and logically correct arguments can be very easily transferred to any field. Considering everything that everyone says "just an opinion" basically means that every single discussion is pointless.

[regarding graphics and worries]

Behold, the TGS 2013 DSII trailer @ 1080p60 with the superior lighting, greater amount of particle effects, etc, before the downgrade.

http://www.gamersyde.com/hqstream_dark_souls_ii_tgs_trailer-30829_en.html

Even though that was clearly not running on PS360 hardware it was also clearly not CG, had to have been running on some PC (PC was the lead platform IIRC) and I would imagine was developed with DX9 / Shader Model 3.0 in mind, given that DSII had to run on the decade-old hardware found in lastgen consoles.

So, still assuming Project Beast is really exclusive to PlayStation 4 and developed on PS4 devkits, just think about the potential for the lighting with a framerate locked 30 (probably not 60, but who knows), given that the programmers behind this beast get to use SM 5.1, the additional GPU Flops, fillrate and other resources PS4 has over the XBone (and PS360) and also, knowing that Sony Japan Studio is helping with development.

Do I expect mind blowing graphics?
Nope.

However, would I expect lighting at least as good as the early preview builds of DSII ?
Yup.

Overall, between Hidetaka Miyazaki, Japan Studio and the PS4 hardware, I am not worried about the visuals of this game.

I always kinda saw Dark Souls 1 as a cross between Demon's Souls and the first Castlevania.

Oh, and one more thing. I have a message for the person that pasted Demon's Souls theme onto that Youtube video:

YOU GLORIOUS COCK TEASE, I LOVE IT, FITS PERFECTLY!

Money isn't the reason but let's not go down this road in this thread.

The hype isn't because it's exclusives, the hype exists because it's another Miyazaki directed Souls game

more like people want to see what Miyazaki has been doing for like, 3 years

you can tell the difference between those who are interested and those who are using it as just a console war bulletpoint. Most of this thread is the former

Shit, i never seriously started a Souls games, but shit, this makes me hyped. I'm about to start Demon's btw :)

Damn, looks really great.

PS4 purchase redeemed

This game will probably make me buy a PS4 been holding out for some good games to come out for it.

Wonder if there's any new type of weapons apart from guns.

Ah well, I guess even though I don't even have a PS4 I'm so hyped about a Sony exclusive, nothing to do with being a fan of the franchise or director.

So looking forward to seeing a full reveal of this game. Then playing the hell out of it. then replaying the hell out of it. Then remote playing the hell out of it on my vita.

And for us gamers point of view as well.

Let that crazy Miyazaki do his crazy thing and create WTF games!

Yep I see no downside to this for anyone

If they are trying to build a new franchise, this is the time to do it, early in the lifecycle of a new generation. I'm starting to buy into the theory that this may be a Shadow Tower reboot/sequel even though Demon's Souls 2 seems like the best branding from a sales potential perspective.

Yep right now they can establish some new IPs for better growth going forward. One of the weaknesses of Sony First party games was the lack of RPG's last gen. Now with this and the rumored RPG by GG they are off to a good start.

Also an honorable mention goes out to Over My Dead Body 2 for vita..which looks absolutely GAWDJUS

Shu and the rest of the PS leadership is being very smart with the PS4.

No way, people thought the same thing with the DS2 reveal and the Faraam armor set. It's just a place holder. As someone mentioned before, PvP wouldn't work in it's current form if everyone was a set character. From knows multiplayer and customization is a huge draw to these games. If they screw with that, the series would take a huge hit.

Faraam, Fluted and Elite Knight sets weren't exactly "placeholders" - I would call them the flagship armours of their respective games.

If the outfit shown in those clips is the "flagship" of this new game... boy howdy, it would be a great way to drive a new aesthetic and mix up an existing formula.

Regardless as to whether you're joking or not, I agree with this. I would like to see them try something different. It's hard to tell if they are making the game they want to make, or if they have been convinced this is the game they have to make.

As long as there is a publisher involved, there will always be some degree of the latter. However, there's no sense blowing it out of proportion. Just because it's not necessarily the game you want to see doesn't mean From (or any studio for that matter) is a house of slaves being forced to work their hand at something they have no personal investment in.

The "Souls Train" still has a good few games in it yet (and besides, what's to stop people enjoying a franchise if it continues successfully?) - but I shouldn't worry. From is grown up enough that it can probably work on new Souls, new AC, Kadokawa stuff, and probably even cook up something fresh and delicious of its own, all at the same time.

I'm only using you as a quote excuse so don't take this personally: have you guys saying this forgotten about dark souls 2? The trailer and gameplay videos were done with its iconic armor. This game seems like it doesn't have armor so far as it won't be set in medieval times if glimpses are to be believed.

Nothing really gives this vibe anymore than the dark souls 2 trailer using an iconic armor. I doubt they'll change the rpg and character making formula so many love.

How DARE you personally insult me like that!

I get what you're saying, but this seems different to me somehow. DS2 was ostensibly just another DS in form and function; it was apparent as soon as it was revealed and demonstrated (in no small part to our knowledge of the first game, of course).

I think it's the weapon that speaks to me. It screams ICONIC, but who knows? In the end, variety is king and From knows that, so it'll be slathered about heavily in one way or another. As for the PvP system refuting this, I'm not so sure. I feel that if they wanted to, they could get around this in an elegant, ingenious way.

Yay. Webm works on Safari?! Also just love the look of these clips. Very fluid animation and you can tell the combat has that dynamic yet grounded gameplay seen in Demon's and Dark Souls. So distinct from all other action games.
