PS1 Appreciation/Collectors Thread of Ugly-Ass Polygons

What is Savers?

I own every PS1 Working Designs release, but my shelf holding Lunar 1 and 2 fell over years ago so now their boxes are messed up. I would love to get my hands on better copies.
I still have two of my original PS1s sitting around at my parent's home gathering dust. Not sure what versions they are though. What is so special about a SCPH-1001? I won't be at their place again until the weekend, but I'll take a look for you.

Too late to respond I suppose. They have a better audio DAC inside of them. I'm not really looking for one anymore, but thanks for the offer.

yeah? i thought the GH version did dual analog controller, though?

the issue with the greatest hits, completely replaces original soundtrack with a really terrible one. and there's no option to hear the original. (so sad)
but you're correct the black label directors cut doesn't have dual analog support but has the original OST intact.

imo. i think having everything originally intact weighs more than dual analog support.

Whats up with this version? I only have the original (pal) release I think.
having the original is great. i have a copy of the original as well.
the directors cut has a new version with new costumes, rearranged items, new camera angles and also has the original game included as well.

the new version in the director's has a beginner and advanced mode setting. it does feel new and really challenging(advanced) compared to the original,

black label = original OST
black label directors cut = original OST
greatest hits directors cut = remixed OST

Just beware any version of RE with this soundtrack:

Actually composed by a deaf guy.
More like this guy:

Didn't he just claim to be deaf, and then even admitted he lied?

Nice, will have to look out for the directors cut then! Love the PS1-era puzzle-horror games like RE, Silent Hill and Dino Crisis. Sucks how that genre died :(

I think he said his hearing was coming back a bit? But that Director's Cut soundtrack is all the evidence I need to know he wasn't lying.
Really? Well, I apologize for making fun of him then. I didn't really follow the story too deep, back then, and only remember reading it was basically a massive scam.

Reading about him a bit on the internet, it seems he was a double fraud. He was supposedly a genius deaf composer when 1) he had a ghost writer and never wrote any music himself, and 2) wasn't even deaf to begin with, according to said ghost writer.

yeah, that's what i read too =) in any case, that re 1 greatest hits soundtrack is horrendous

Bought Echo Night on a whim, finished it up with the true ending last night. What a pretty good game. Loved how you visit locations in the past, the variety of settings kept things interesting. Only major blemish are the casino ghosts which took quite awhile. There's something about horror games on PS1 where the limited graphics make it feel more otherworldly and nightmarish. Hellnight is another game that gave me that feeling.

Looks like I have a freshly translated sequel to look forward to playing.

Kinda wanna tray Echo Night after seeing this vid

Hah that video is exactly what prompted me to try it. I had played Echo Night Beyond before, but I knew nothing about the first game in the series so I figured it would be fun to go into it blind. It's cheap on PSN too.

That's 480i in a nutshell.

Properly deinterlaced with motion compensation + edge detection, no. It can look identical to 480p. I've done testing through the PS3 set to 480p and the framemeiter. Both looked like I was seeing full detail and no combing artifacts.

The reasons for 480i being seen as ugly is that simply line doubling only gives you half the vertical resolution per frame and just tossing fields together causes the saw tooth artifact known as combing.

Yes, deinterlaced only, just interlacing only is disgusting!!!=O It's why I have to deinterlace most PS2 games I got. This is what I like about the PS1, I hardly need to deinterlace any of them, funny how some PS1 games like Bloody Roar 2 are full 480i though.

And I tend to prefer direct connections over using upscalers/deinterlacers as well, though with most PS2 games it's best to use a upscaler/deinterlacer for better results.

Mind doing a mini review on Echo Night?

Sure thing! Echo Night is a first person adventure horror game with a strong emphasis on its story. I'm going to be vague about the story and setting since I really loved going into it blind and seeing for myself what it was all about. The gameplay however, revolves around exploration and interacting with ghosts that are trapped in the location with you. Most of the ghosts are friendly and will have a bit of dialogue that refers to an item or puzzle you need to find or solve. By completing each task, you free the ghosts who leave behind items to help you advance, as well as Astral pieces, which are needed for the best ending. There are also malevolent ghosts which will impede your progress and attack you. They appear so infrequently that I always got shocked by their sudden appearance and the first one even managed to get an embarrassingly audible reaction out of me. You have no weapons in the game, though you can combat the harmful ghosts by turning on lights that scare them away.

The controls take some getting used to seeing as how you have to use the shoulder buttons to look up and down. There are a couple of control schemes in the options to pick from. I went with the King's Field setting which worked best for me. Also in the options you can increase movement and turn speed which you should do as soon as you can since the default is pretty slow. I'm now wondering if Echo Night Beyond had that option too since its slow speed contributed to me losing interest in that one.

One of the cool things about the game is that at times you will interact with something and get sent to various times in the past. These small vignettes flesh out the story as well as put you in new locations for a brief period, which keeps things interesting. In these new locations you solve puzzles and find items which you take back to the main location with you to progress. Speaking of the puzzles, they are mostly on the easy side. I did have to resort to a guide at a couple points, one of which was because I didn't know you could examine items in your inventory, but overall I seemed to know what to do and where to explore most of the times. The game overall is pretty easy, and I ended up having a ton of healing items I never needed to bother with.

There are a total of 4 endings and the great thing is that you don't have to replay the game to see them all. I also don't believe there is anything permanently missable that will lock you out of the best ending. I thought I had screwed myself out of the best ending early in the game, so I was pretty happy to be able to finish it completely in the end. For the best ending, you need 26 of the Astral pieces, so basically you need to free every ghost. The most annoying ghosts to free are the Casino ghosts. Basically you are given 5 tokens and have to turn it into 100 tokens playing roulette or slots. Once you have 100 tokens you can challenge a ghost woman to Blackjack, where you have to get your winnings up to 200 to beat her and free all the ghosts. I savescummed my way to 100 playing roulette, but if you hold off on freeing them right away you can find Claim Tickets which you can exchange for 20 tokens each. I had enough tickets by the end of the game that I could have avoided the first part and jumped straight to Blackjack. Freeing them is totally optional unless you want the best ending.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game. The pacing kept me going forward and the variety of locations kept things interesting. The story was by no means revolutionary, but I found it enjoyable and interesting. I got a Shadow of Destiny vibe from the game which really makes me want to revisit that particular game. It took me about 7 hours to finish it completely. Definitely worth a buy if it sounds interesting.

And here's the entire collection. I still have many titles to get. On its way to my house as we speak, Descent Long Box, Brigandine and Spyro Collector's Edition (all 3 games). I still need some missing titles to complete some series (like Crash Bandicoot 1, Colony Wars: Red Sun ie) and also would like to buy all the mega man games, etc. I do intend to add at least another hundred titles or so and want to replace every GH for BL.

Great collection! If you like Descent, you should try Descent Maximum. It's basicly The PC version of 2 which is awesome. Both games have killer soundtracks.

Very solid collection, papersleeves!
Is PS Diablo a good port to go for, if there's no way to play the original game on the PC?

I liked it. Not as crisp as the PC version and it seems to run slightly slower, but it is a good port. Inventory management with the controller took some time to get used to but it works. I played this game a ton back on PC and without nitpicking, Id say it's a good port to pickup. Copies are on the $40 and up tho.

Yeah, slowly but surely, it's creeping up in price. PAL version (which I assume is crappier than the US one, due to PAL50 standard) is even pricier. It's not among my most wanted games, but every time I see it popping out, I feel like I'm missing something classic, for not having played it yet.

I LOVE Descent. So many memories from the DOS version. Descent Maximum is on my buying list. I thought that the fidelity of this port wasn't quite as good as the first game though. Aren't the levels nearly completely different compared to the original game on PC?

damn fine collection!

haha no idea how that'd work but id play the fuck out of it

Damn, ahah! It was very late XD But yeah, that would be one hell of a mix. Play as the Player and fight against Lucas Blight and its powerful Syndicate!

Like Jake said, it's a good port but it has some flaws. The animations aren't anywhere as good as the PC version, there are many slowdowns in the dungeons, the resolution is now a quarter of the original (240p instead of 480p) and the controls/menus aren't quite as good. Still, I've beaten this game on PS1 with all 3 classes so it is perfectly playable and a lot of fun! Here are my personal recommendations:

-Set the game to max speed. It speeds up the action quite a bit and kind of counter the slowdowns you'll experience.

-Use the expert control mode. This will let you quickly access your inventory without having to press start then select your inventory for example. More shotcuts = better.

-Play the game on a CRT screen and use standard composite video. Do NOT use component, s-video or SCART as it will make all the dithering on screen very apparent (which is pretty ugly).

nice you got RE 2 dual shock version.

Not exactly sure why I specified this. It's not exactly rare, is it?

How do you know if you have the GH disc of directors cut?

The original, BL version of the director's cut disc has "Director's Cut" transparently written inside a red rectangle, with shades on some letters. The GH version has "Director's Cut" transparently written inside a black rectangle with transparent border, no font shades.

just quoting from game FAQ's and Neoseeker

Resident Evil 2 (Dual Shock)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

This version was a re-release for the PlayStation in the same year
(1998). It added support for Sony's Dual Shock controller, allowing the
game rumble feedback and analog stick control movement. As an extra,
the Dual Shock Version contained the new Extreme Battle minigame.

It has two arrange games aside from the original, untouched version of the game:a rookie mode(easier than the easy difficulty level from the first game;sub-machine gun, available from the start, gattling gun and rocket launcher have unlimited ammo) and extreme battle mode, a mini-game unlocked after completing any scenario on the normal difficulty level. It has three difficulty levels and four playable characters, two unlockable. It also uses the controllers rumble feature.

How do you know if you have the GH disc of directors cut?
just on top of the label differences mentioned here's a rundown of the differences between black label and greatest hits

RE:DC
_____
- Original BGM from the original US release
- Ending credits montage from various cutscenes in the game
- "Advanced" Mode (the "Director's Cut")
- 3 Ink Ribbons for every batch found
- Came with a short demo of Resident Evil 2 on a separate disc

RE:DC(DS) (greatest hits)
_________
- Dual Shock rumble and analog control support
- New orchestral soundtrack
- No ending credits montage
- "Arranged" Mode (the "Director's Cut", same as RE:DC's just named differently)
- 3 Ink Ribbons for every batch found
- Came with everyone's favorite green stripe at the top of the case

Picked up some goodies this week.

DTL-H3050 serial cable
Virus - The battlefield (ntsc-j)
Netz Toyota Racing (ntsc-j)
Mizzurna Falls (ntsc-j)
Box of 5 PS1 consoles for $4! (two are SCPH-1000's too)

Just grabbed these 5. And one less Greatest Hits polluting the collection! Heard good stuff about Ninja Shadow of Darkness. Hope it's good! Other than that, nothing really impressive here...X-Men, Hot Shot Golf 2 and Cool Boarders were 99 cents each LOL

And sorry for the bad floor, this is below my desk at job. Didn't want to take a picture of my games in front of my colleagues :/

Ayy, I was like 'check-check-che...', until the no-RGB warning. :D
I'll probably grab the game anyway, as soon as I find a decent deal on it.

There are some levels that are different but the majority mimic the PC version. Some levels were made a little smaller, maybe because of the larger open areas would run slow.

There was a 4th Cool Boarders game!? Never knew that. The series is 20 years old this year. So much of my nostalgia turning 20 this year...

Yeah, and I think it was made in extremely high quantities. New and sealed copies of the Greatest Hits version are probably the single most common PS1 game I see in the wild, lol.

To be honest, many PS1 games will suffer from the exact same problem. I've recently started replaying my PS1 collection on my PS2 plugged with component cable and was incredibly disappointed by the display and my current retro display is quite good (Panasonic Tau). Since then, I've switched to composite and it simply feels and looks much, much better. It's as if the PS1 wasn't able to cope with better connection like component or RGB. Hell, I even remember having this problem back in the days while I bought an expensive Monster S-Video cable thinking it would improve the picture quality. Turns out, it looked worse lol.

Alrighty then. Since I've enjoyed Descent 2 just as much as the first, I will definitively grab it too!

Indeed, this game is criminally cheap. Also, it's better than Cool Boarders 3 and it's hard for me to admit since me and my childhood friend played the shit out of Cool Boarders 3 demo when it came out.

That's interesting. If you go back a couple of pages, you'll find a few posts where I pointed out a very similar 'issue' I had with some PS1 games, played on the PS2 via backwards compatibility. Games such as GT, GT2, Tekken 3 - where the dithering is already blazing - seem to suffer even more from being displayed through the PlayStation 2 (in RGB, on a very mid-tier Trinitron CRT TV). To know that Diablo is probably another one to add to the list, doesn't make me happy at all. :D

I have Alpha 3 via the anthology, so it probably doesn't make sense to get the PS1 version(apart from World Tour)...

What's RPG Maker like? Really cool of you to offer.

Seems to work just fine so far, no manual. Its got its original case though (but thats not exactly in great shape). Or did you mean how it plays?

It has its own built in tutorial rpg (which is kinda the day in the life of a trash mob of sorts), but other than that, its kinda like a watered down version of what you'd see on PC.

I'll take Alpha 3. Always wanted the Saturn version but its not worth the price, so I guess I can settle for the PS1 version.

Cool, its complete, but may need some buffing if you want it to work perfectly. Has some random music skip issues, but works fine otherwise.
