PS1 Appreciation/Collectors Thread of Ugly-Ass Polygons

I really want to own one of the blue debug units. (a net yaroze too for that matter)
I see them every now and then on ebay. I think I'll go for the next one.
I wanted one if those like crazy! Playing the Net Yaroze games that came on OAPSM demo discs was super cool, indie development before the recent indie renaissance.

If I remember correctly, some Net Yaroze games became full releases, like Devil Dice.

quick question: if ive a PS2 (let's ignore the BC PS3 since it may not be around forever), is there a good reason to have a PS1? said system has an HDD loader but last i checked, no way to store PSX games on it, or bypass region locking, whereas the old spring & action replay thing i had on an older PS1 got around that, that maybe the only advantage i can currently think of though

Not really. I keep mine around for nostalgia value, but honestly the PS2 plays PS1 games as well as a PS1 would, maybe even better since it can output via component instead of just composite.

I think there are a small number of games that don't play on PS2 however.

Guys, am trying to continue with my Playstion collection. However, i read online that the anything other than black labels aren't really anything special (Great hits). Is this true?

They're worth less than black labels. They're also ugly. I would never buy a greatest hits version of a game, personally.

I'd imagine that black label ones are rarer, thanks to the Greatest Hits/Platinum versions coming out after a certain time and being around for longer in a lot of cases.

So if you're going for a pure 'MUST HAVE BLACK LABELS/MOST RARE VERSION OF GAME' then I guess they're no good, but if you just want to play them, I think that GH/Plat versions are just fine.
Really just depends on your preference.

The vast majority of my collection are original black labels, but honestly I don't sweat it much if I get a Greatest Hits version. The difference in value is negligible, and other than having bragging rights there's little reason to pay much more for a black label. I guess if you're making a collection as an investment, which I think is a fool's errand, you'll seek out black labels. But honestly, it's not worth fretting over.

Is there a better place than eBay to buy PSX games? I always get in the mood to re-buy some stuff when I come across this thread but it's time consuming to filter through the auctions to find things in good condition at decent prices

Only other thing I can suggest is second-hand stores/pawn stores in your area. If you're lucky, some might still accept PSX games, and be selling them.

thanks to whomever told me the language barrier to vib ribbon wasn't bad. got the game, and it's really cool. enjoying it with the help of a FAQ for the menus.

i'd suggest it to anyone who like stuff like bit trip runner. though the music is much better, and you can use your own CDs.

Why do you have a language barrier? The game was released in Europe.

Thread title got me thinking. I gotta say, I love MGS's look on the PSX. Twin Snakes is a ruination of the original's rugged graphics. It used the limitations of the system to tap into those gritty 80's action and sci fi films, the cheap and dirty ones. Twin Snakes entire philosophy was opposite that. You couldn't do this game visually today, people would complain you weren't using the hardware to its potential. I love how it could only have been made when it was made, and how brilliantly its aged.

^emulator, or you got a setup to play imports? so jelly!

yeah, my original PSX has a modchip.

damn thing is ugly though. it has a hole drilled for an LED that was never put in to indicate if the chip is active or not, and a huge lid sticker that i got from an issue of PSM covering it.

i had to put away the much nicer looking PSOne to set it up.

Why do you have a language barrier? The game was released in Europe.

my console is NTSC. i don't think the PAL version would work on my console even though it's modded

that would be me. Glad to hear you got it and enjoying this gem of a game.

Should work, I know that I can play NTSC games on my modchipped PAL console just fine.

I have a modded NTSCJ PSX and I too can play PAL games, but they are off-centre and in black and white. Virtually unplayable so I have always stuck with NTSC regioned games, even though I live in a PAL country.

I think that'll be TV dependant. I have an NTSC version of Megaman X Collection, and if I start the PS2, it'll be fine, but once a game boots up it'll go black and white. If I turn the TV off and on again, it is fine though. I assume it determines whether it goes into PAL or NTSC mode when it turns on, and doesn't expect to have to change.

I know that a lot of Australian TVs got NTSC compatibility in the last years of CRT popularity, but I am guessing that maybe US TVs didn't get PAL compatibility in the same way, since they were US TVs and PAL compatibility probably wasn't a thing that many people in the US really needed. Only guessing though, obviously no experience.

Yeah thats where I am in Australia.
What you said may certainly be a possibilty, at least in my case I think its the modchip in the console itself that is the culprite this time.
As I havn't bought a PAL console since the Snes days, all systems I have are imported or modded in some way. My PSX is the only one that gives me any display problems when attempting to play PAL regioned games, therfore I came to the conclusion the chip is the cause. It just doesnt seem to be able to support PAL resolutions correctly.

I so agree with this! The style of the original obliterates Twin Snakes. While the original was mysterious, vague and dark, Twin Snakes was much more, i dont know, normal i guess? Still worth playing and owning I guess, but it could and can never touch the original.

I'm with you there. I can't agree with people who think it's literally the worst game ever made, but I do still prefer the PSX version. Twin Snakes is still pretty damn great though, just different.

Yeah, it was worth playing for sure. But I would always recommend the original over it :)

I really hate myself now that I sold my PS1 years ago -.- It was my first console ever and I got it for Christmas '97 along with two SCPH-1080 controllers (those without analog sticks). Sold it in 2003/2004 for 50 € to a friend incl. both controllers, a Memory Card, Demo 1 (SCES-00816) and the game Porsche Challenge.
Really regret that decision, especially because of the controllers. I still love those controllers because they are so lightweight and look so... slight (especially in contrast to the new clunky DualShock 4 controller).

Luckily I kept the rest of my PS1 library and one Memory Card because I got a PS2 in 2002 so I could still play my old games. Still have my PS2 to this day and I won't ever sell it, I won't make that mistake again.

Some people are anal as shit about players choice or greatest hits editions. I personally don't care and buy games for myself, not to sell later like stocks.

It's good sometimes as those editions are a little cheaper.

Speaking of "Greatest Hits", I'm so glad that those games are marketed as "Platinum" in Europe. The silver design of the cover artwork looks so much better and more "precious" than the green design of the "Greatest Hits" in America.

On the other hand I think the CDs themselves look better as "Greatest Hits" than as "Platinum" since the "Platinum" CDs had no custom design at all, they all looked the same (like this one) with the same font, no custom game logo etc.

I'm in the UK but I have pristine copies of:

NTSC Final Fantasy Tactics
NTSC Chrono Cross
NTSC Xenogears
NTSC Einhander
NTSC Lunar Eternal Blue Complete

I bought them way back when in a specialist VG store in Liverpool and have played them. Just wondered if they're worth anything? They're not "greatest hits" editions or anything like that.

Anybody have any impressions on the Famicon emulation quality the Sunsoft Memorial Collections?

Thinking about getting number 5 as an inexpensive way to play Journey to Silius.

I'm not sure about their value, but I do know that I would love a version of Lunar and Xenogears!

Lunar's the most valuable. They go on eBay US for anything from $70-90.

The others have dropped in price since they're all available to download from PSN now, and FFT has had a couple of ports. You'd probably get around $40 for Xenogears and the others are more like $20-30.

Oh man, I missed this thread! Will post my PS1 collection later on. I loved this system so much and built up a sizable library of literally every single game I ever wanted for it...TWICE. Had to sell it all off in 1998 and spent the next decade getting all the games back again.

Still have a few games left to sell off, too, like the Arc The Lad Collection and Lunar 1 (don't care for RPGs. I had most of Square's games and sold those off) I tried to sell Rakugaki Showtime off several times over the last few years, but nobody ever put in a bid on it. T_T

Are we allowed to buy and sell stuff here? If so, you should definitely put those games up here. I'm so ready for some Arc The Lad and Lunar-love!

I already have enough Greatest Hits games from when the Playstation was still around that they don't really concern me. At the time I was just happy to have the game

I remember with the PS2 there was psychological barrier to buying GH games, which broke when I got VF4:Evolution.

This is going off-topic, but I've never been able to sell most of the "rare" games I have apart from stuff I had on the Neo-Geo. Shantae on GBC is another one that I listed multiple times without a bid. Was thinking of selling my Saturn collection off (it's time...Guardian Heroes is on XBLA, which was the last game I would have wanted to go back and play) but I think it would just be a big headache.

Feel free to PM me with an offer. Both are complete and Arc comes with the bonus pre-order pocket watch.

This is also my take on the "GH vs. Black Label" debate. That said, SONY sure could have picked a much less tacky color than bright Green...

Some new PS1 games!

1Xteme is the GH version, but I don't care. The original is way too expensive and rare and I was just curious to play it. I had played the crap out of it on my old launch demo disc.

And of course the 2 Ace Combats I didn't own already, 2 and 3!

And I'm waiting on another game I ordered - Resident Evil: Director's Cut. The original release, not the crappy Dual Shock edition. (They changed the music in that one.)

Where have you been ordering from, ebay?

Also, for the uninformed: RickA238 has a pretty nice list of PSOne titles (and others) for sale in the B/S/T 2013 Thread.

Whatever happend to Sunsoft anyways? They were so great back in the Nes-days, when then they just kinda disappeared from the map during the PS1-days. Anybody have some info on what happend?

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I'm thinking about buying the original Tenchu again. Good idea, or is it best left as a memory? I have no problem with tank controls. I just want a good stealth game... and that music is calling me.

I assume that the Tenchu Shinobi Gaisen version that came out in Japan is entirely in Japanese...

got some gud stuff today at the flea market

45 for everything, not bad

i bought fear effect 2 circa 2003 for 5 bucks when circuit city was clearing out their ps1 games, sold it a few years ago like a dope and now 10 years after initially buying it i get a used copy for 4x the price

martian gothic is a space themed survival horror game that got crap reviews and features lulz boxart. but it was developed by creative reality who were the guys behind dreamweb, an uber nihilistic cyberpunk adventure game (check it out, it's freeware) so it's probably worth a look
