I think I'm going to hook up my XRGB-3 again and play some Fear Effect tonight. I stumbled upon richisawesome's picture from a little while back and was like "yeah, XRGB is getting used":

Still can't believe how good this looks.

Hero of the Day stays killing it with these hauls, congrats man!

Edit: oh, and with Parappa 2, there were a few minor edits to the lyrics. In the burger level, the dude says "tastes better than wine," which was changed to "you better get in line." And one of the levels had "the Lord" censored to "the man," or something.

huh...never knew this stuff! id be way more bothered if PaRappa 2 was like half as good as Lammy tho.

Had a pretty good day:

Symphony of the Night price is a fucking joke, but wound up free 'cause they do buy 5 get 6th free (I bought other non-PSX stuff as well).

Pretty happy to have found Lunar and Arc the Lad. Kind of odd that those two were there, but not Lunar 1. Have to assume whoever brought those in had to have owned the first also. Maybe someone beat me to it. Arc the Lad is missing 3 of the 4 red button things, outside of that they're both complete. Always wanted to play Arc the Lad, so it'll probably be the next game I play.

I am told Hoshigami is fucking terrible, but I tend to buy anything with Atlus on it for some reason.

They had Parappa the Rapper for $30 also, sadly it didn't have it's manual or it would have been mine as well.
Where do you buy all these hero?

Played through the first disc of Fear Effect (which took about an hour, as this is a short game.) First time I've played the game in a decade.

I like it. I think the best way to describe it is Resident Evil meets Flashback or Out of this World. Y'know, one of those games where you die a bunch until you find the right way to approach a situation? Because Fear Effect plays like a Resident Evil game, but has a lot of that sort of trial and error gameplay. It's tough, but gives you constant save points, so it's not frustrating. Something about the gameplay and the pacing makes the game feel like a "survival" game, moreso than even actual survival horror titles. I dunno. You just never feel safe, because there are like a million ways to die.

But it's cool. While the game clearly isn't for everyone, I dig it, and I think that if this sort of gameplay is your thing, the game is still completely playable today. The game's use of streaming video for all the backgrounds still looks pretty cool (though it's pretty grainy if you're way up close to the screen.) Piped through the XRGB, it's still surprisingly pretty.

Oddly enough, even though I like Fear Effect and even though the game's like 4-5 hours long, I've never actually finished the thing. The farthest I've gotten is the beginning of disc 3. I dunno why. But I want to see it through, this time.

Regional chain called Disc/Mega Replay. Have four of them within driving distance (though two are an hour away so it's a little far to go regularly).

It's not always this good, but they've been rocking it lately with PSX stuff. People just don't really seem into PSX stuff, yet. Some of this had been posted on their facebook page for almost a week, so I was really shocked it was still there. If that had been SNES or NES stuff, it would have been gone minutes after they posted it.

Disc replay? I take it that means you're from the Chicago area?

Couple hours south. Live outside of Champaign. So, there's one here in Champaign, Bloomington, and Decatur. I've been told the ones in Chicago suck. There's actually one in Springfield too, but it fucking blows (though I did get Secret of Mana for $25 and Turtles 3 for the NES for $5 from them).

Also one in Terre Haute Indiana I sometimes go to. It used to be the best. Most of my collection was built from them. Their prices were insanely cheap. They upped them like a a year ago now, sadly. There were times where I seriously walked out of there with multiple bags filled with NES/SNES stuff. 99 cent NES games all day long. Not any more.

All of them have been super dry lately. I've never seen their NES/SNES cases as empty as they have been the last few months, and it's that way at all of them. Been told that's just how the winter goes and things will pick back up now that the weather is nice. We'll see.

Sorry to hear it, man. I used to be down in Bloomington. Fuck central Illinois.

But the Disc Replay there was surprisingly robust. I guess people there, moreso than anywhere else, just don't know what stuff is worth.

It is soooooooo good, so much better than Ace Combat 3 (coming from an Ace Combat fanboy) and packed with a huge amount of content. The flight academy actually teaches you some stuff about real flying, the graphics are truly impressive and the gameplay is just awesome.

This guy still gives me nightmares though :(

I did get this from Bloomington like a month ago. So they do get good stuff still from time to time. One of the workers there actually said there's a couple that comes in and buys up everything decent. Probably just re-sellers.

An employee actually told me the same thing at the Terre Haute one forever ago, too. Though it was just a person, not a couple. Made sense there. Sometimes you'd go in and there would be a couple hundred games. So many they'd just be stacked up behind the displays 'cause they couldn't fit them all in (a fact most people didn't know which led to some good scores like $5 Mega Man X, $12 Soul Blazer, 99 cent Super GameBoy). But, the next time you'd go in there there would literally be like 10-15 games in the display and that was it. It was fucking crazy to see that much stuff just all be gone.

I work at one and I can tell you that this is extremely common. We have quite a few people who come in regularly and buy stuff just to resell. I usually make sure not to put out a few of our better priced rare titles until the resellers have already made their rounds. ;)

I absolutely loved Fear Effect. I finished it with a code that let me bypass all the puzzles because they were brutal as hell and the game came out during a primitive internet era so looking up FAQ was a pain. I never got finished with the sequel because I had 1HP at a check point and couldn't get passed a certain part.

What I remember most about Fear Effect was the ridiculous disk swapping. Like going from disk 2 to 3, back to 2 etc. lol very weird from what I remember. Was so pissed that we never got that PS2 sequel. I even pre ordered it.

Well, I found out why so many reviews for Star Trek: Invasion are so negative. There's a massive difficulty spike in mission 4a and 5. The former makes you escort a ship through five waves of fighters, then you have to blow up an enemy ship before it or enemy fighters blow up the ship, the latter has you tow a shuttle to your mothership, right before it gets killed in seconds by a few enemy fighters and one or two enemy capital ships. And this is with me using invincibility cheats.

Got to disc 4 of Fear Effect. That's farther than I've ever gotten before! I think this game will hold the record for "longest span of time taken to beat a game." Assuming I finish it , it'll have taken 13 years. That's such a long time that I'm mentally having a tough time accepting that there's stuff that happens after where I left off last time I played the game. Weird feeling.

Also, there's one scene on disc 3 that's like... super gross. I know the game sparked a bit of controversy back in 2000, but eegads -- I'm surprised they got away with that level of violence back then.

You know what, i've never heard anyone mention Kartia.

I got it from the Free to a good home thread long ago (and feel bad about still not getting around to getting deep). Its an SRPG with Amano art and a pretty good soundtrack.

On that note, hopefully Saiyuki and Legend of Legaia dont jump up in price before I get around to grabbing them.

Is Fear Effect survival horror or more of a thriller / mystery deal?

The latter. It's a fantastic game, and has horrific elements in the plot, but it's more of a cyberpunk action game/graphic adventure.

The sequel is also good, if not as.

I'm also bummed we didn't get Inferno. There was every indication it was going to be twisted.

First new PS1 gamesoft in a year:

Really liked what I played of the game back in the day. It's basically Resident Evil + samurai. And it's pretty damn tough. But the combat system is good, and the music is awesome. Been meaning to actually buy the game for a looooooooong time, but this time I finally bit the bullet.

Loved Soul of the Samurai. Did/unlocked everything in that game. Good times!

I acquired and started playing MediEvil II today. It seems easier than the first game. The controls are still super klunky, but otherwise, it is a great game.

I DID IT! It took literally half my lifetime, but I finally beat Fear Effect. Phew. That's satisfying. Though, as I said before, it's weird to suddenly have to accomodate for the fact that there's actually an ending to the game, instead of just... the first half that I'm familiar with.

Anyway, I still think the first disc was my favorite part of the game, by far. I'm a sucker for that Blade Runner/Ghost in the Shell setting. Incidentally, that's why I also really liked what little I played of Retro Helix.

But I guess in the end, it's just kind of cool to know that this game is still a lot of fun. I was worried that it would've aged horribly, but no. Fear Effect remains a good game, and I'm glad I finally saw it through to the end.

I think im going to have to add Fear Effect to my list now...I remember hearing a little about it back in the day, but now from the impressions i've read, really want to give it a shot.

On that note, is it better to just play PS1 games on a PS2?

Digging the Fear Effect love. Beat it twice back in the day, and the game still holds up visually. That underworld is great, totally nailed that cultural setting.

I've kinda been considering that, myself. I'm pretty sure the PS2 just has PS1 hardware built in, which is why you don't have the issues that the PS3's BC presents... so it's certainly accurate. But then, a few games are incompatible. Even if the incompatible games are mostly crap, that's a bummer.

One upside to the PS2 is that it supports optical audio where the PS1 does not. But I haven't actually tested PS2 audio quality vs. the PS1, so I dunno if it really makes any difference at all. And the PS2 supports component, which is convenient (though I'm pretty sure you're one of the dudes using RGB anyway, right?) I should really test RGB vs. component with PS1 games one of these days.

But the PS1 has that sweet intro.

I'm thinking about just buying another PSOne and modding it, like I used to have. I'm pretty sure that's the best model to get anyway, since the advantages of the early PS1 models' DACs have been debunked, and the PSOne seems to have slightly brighter video than the early model PS1s (as in, pre-SCPH-3500 or 5500) anyway. I always regretted selling that thing.

Speaking of Fear Effect, is Retro Helix a worthy sequel? Is it better/worse?

From what I remember, Retro Helix is definitely a better game. It feels more polished in terms of how levels are laid out, and they made the FMV backgrounds work more seamlessly. It's also a way darker game, if that's your thing.

Well my PS2 is connected by component, and the only way I can use RGB is through a component converter anyway. But yeah, the only thing i'd miss is the PS1 intro, and of course i'd eventually get my PSone modded to import titles. The best way I have to connect my PSone is through S-video, so i'd think PS2 would be a better choice for now.

On finding a PSone, they seem to pop up at Goodwill all the time these days, or at least i've run into em more often.

Very solid collection. What are some of the big wants on your list?

Nothing too rare, would like to get a game called Poy Poy I seem to remember playing a long time ago. Also wouldn't mind getting Long box Tekken since I have 2 and 3. Twisted Metal Small Brawl as well since I have all the others.

Which ending? There's three. All great. My favorite is where
Hana dies
. Great nightmare fuel.

Re: Retro Helix, it's good, but FE1 is better. And FE1 is darker, IMO. Since it's a prequel, the really bleak stuff hasn't happened yet, namely
Deke's fate.

I think you can just load a save once you've seen the other two?

Maybe, I don't remember. Does beating it once unlock Hard? Maybe all you need to do is beat it twice, once to unlock Hard and then just play through Hard for the 3rd choice at the end.

I got the two endings you can get on normal. Not that the ending is more than like 10 seconds anyway, but yeah. I'll probably try hard mode someday, but for now, I'm moving on.

As for Retro Helix being darker, I think I felt that way about it because the first level, in particular, is extremely dreary. The music really adds to that effect, too. That, and they amped up the violence in the death scenes quite a bit, and there's a lot more fucked up imagery. Though, I suppose it'd take a lot to top the scene in FE1 where
Deke gets his head split open.

Anyway, today's game is going to be my still unopened JP copy of UmJammer Lammy.

My favorite ending in Fear Effect:

I wonder what you will see.
(eyes go black)

The third end,

neither has to die, and you fight the true final boss.

Oh yeah, I remembered hearing about Fear Effect 1 having nudity back in the day. That was half the reason I played the game back when I was in 8th grade. Then, yesterday, I find out the only nudity is some grey-skinned demon chick... I can't get get off on that!

You're telling me I waited 13 years to see demon tits?!

Well, there is the towel scene. It really boils down to just having fan service.

Boy is the gore brutal, though.
