PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Picked up some stuff over the past week or so. Never tried any of the post-PS1 Spyro/Crash games, but I'm gonna try to go ahead and pick them up if I find them cheap. Same with the PS2 Castlevanias. Really happy with the RotTK, just need the longbox of IV and IX to finish the PS set. Been looking out for copies of Colosseum, Fight for NY, and Obscure for a LONG time now, so I'm happy to have those out of the way. Kuon is just icing on the cake. ;)

ROTK8 is absolutely amazing. One of my favourite PS2 games. I need to get myself a copy of it too.

There was another gladiator game...made by Acclaim I want to say? It was pretty cool, but I cant remember the name for the life of me. It had you fighting mythological creatures as well.

Saw Blood Will Tell today...was 50 bucks though, and wasnt complete so that was a no go. Snagged The Red Star, Shadow of Rome, and Okage: The Shadow King.

Dunno how I missed The Red Star. Production values are high or anything and the graphics arent that great, but the gameplay is pretty cool (shooter/beat em up hybrid) and the story / universe the game takes place in is pretty fresh. Not going to get into Okage for abit, but tested it out, and it seems like it had the Disgaea style sense of humor before Disgaea existed.

You can also buy a ps3 usb memory card adapter (the one they put out for ps2 games) and connect your memory card up to your pc and put on freemcboot that way. The way freemcboot works is via that memory card. when the card is taken out the ps2 acts normal. when the card is in it goes to freemcboot. And yes you can play import games with it just fine.

I wish I had known this before I dropped $60 on an Action Replay.

Are there good 3d platformers on the system? Like real, old school style platformers. Not Ratchet and not Jak past 1. Sly 1 counts...but I have already played that.

Yeah, Ape Escape 2 and 3 are must plays if you're looking for some solid 3D platformers. I guess you could say they're not really "old school" though. Check out games like Vexx, Haven: Call of the King, and Dr. Muto if you want some N64-era 3D platform games. Herdy Gerdy is a great 3D Lemmings-like puzzle platformer too. There's also Kya; Dark Lineage and Kao the Kangaroo 2, but your mileage may vary on a lot of these games, ha! Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (as mentioned above) is more like an action/adventure Zelda-like game, but it's certainly worth playing regardless. Super cool game.

Crash: Wrath of Cortex? Maximo and its sequel are great. Zin has more action than platforming though.

EDIT: Why dont people like Auto Modelista again? Seems pretty cool to me. Need more cel-shaded realistic racers.

Got my slim hooked up again. Added it back in the rotation. Picked up Devil May Cry, Max Payne, and Gran Turismo 3. Such an awesome console. Pretty stoked that I still had a GT3 save on my card.

Funny thing that people are talking about Ape Escape, I just called a copy of Ape 3 yesterday.

I only played the first one so far, but I watched some videos and it seems to be awesome!

Which is better? Ape 2 or 3? Any on psn?
I prefer the third game myself but they're both decent fun.

As for platformers, some of the ones mentioned were decent back in the day but they don't hold up well, I feel.

My favorite platformer for the system is probably still Klonoa 2. Best in the series by far and one of my favorite "2.5D" platformers of all time.

As someone else mentioned the two Maximo games are excellent.

I also had some fun with I-Ninja (which isn't exclusive).

While not a standard platformer I also thought ChainDive was a suitably retro-styled action platformer.

There's really not that many great platformers on PS2, though, oddly enough. I think it was during that era where platforming games kind of fell off the radar for a while.

I'm getting that this week.=O
Oh man, you should have a blast. It's such a damn good game.

I bought it on day 1 back in summer 2001 during the release of NCAA 2002. Waited in line while everyone bought NCAA and took the cashier off guard by asking for Klonoa 2. :X

Thoughts on Maximo and its sequel?

Maximo GtG is, imo, an "all time great." (Should be viewed as something like the PS2's Brave Fencer Musashi.)

1. The levels are chock full of stuff, and this is a good thing, so, after adjusting to the awkward camera, take it slow, explore, use downward strike to reveal hidden chests. You'll find there's a ton of humor and clever tricks on every level, so try to play as complete as possible.

2. The game's power up system is similar to R-Type in that if you don't collect all the power ups as you go (ie. if you hack'n'slash it and rush forward), you are at a significant disadvantage down the road. So, treat the game a bit like an old-school shmup and aim for building a game save based on a perfect playthrough and you'll find every level to be much easier than the game's reputation. ie. The hard stuff will be what it should be: executing the platforming and timing the battles, all of which are hard but doable, not being under-powered or under-armored because you didn't find all the stuff on every level.

3. Those two things being said, I don't know what conditions led to the graphics / music / level design / and overall mood of this game, but, they are all quite special. You'll find yourself chuckling again and again at the little touches and attention to detail. This is one of those games where everything just clicks. It's simple, but within that, everything is well-executed. Maximo is a legitimate gem on the PS2.

And it's replayable years later. LIke War of the Monsters, it's one of those games that is always better than I remembered it.

The box should say playstation 2 on it, for one.
on the rear shot, you can see the artwork was sloppily cut by hand, and the spine doesn't measure up correctly.

The game is imported so i thought it had something to do with it but yeah it seems counterfeited case well as long as the game works am good :)

I have no interest in 2D anymore. Nintendo releasing 900 of those has killed any desire of mine to play them. I loved 3d platformers and now they are all but dead.

Interesting to hear that because Klonoa 1 is the all-time classic for me, while K2 is really excellent but not on the same level. K1 is so pure and direct in its gameplay and level progression, it captures a special magic for me. K2 has extremely high highs diluted by missteps like the overdone snowboard levels and overuse of repeating levels under new conditions. I just recently beat Klonoa: Empire of Dreams when it was put on the Wii U GBA VC. It was nice, but more of a puzzle game than platformer and not in the same quality conversation as K1 and 2.

Anyone looking for brilliant and timeless platformers should check them both out, and Klonoa 1 is especially easy to find on PSN.

Perhaps there are exeptions to that and maybe the hdtv player works differently with the sort of case you mentioned.
You quoted the answer yourself:
So it doesn't increase the internal(=original=source) resolution, only the output (=forced=target) one.
GSM overrides display register settings of the GS - Ie. there is no "deinterlacing/upscaling" to speak of - for games that render ~480 internally, that's exactly what you'll get, others will be something lower-res (so you're actually getting a downgrade from standard output of the same game).

So this thread made me miss my ps2...and I went on an ebay spree now I own a PS2 slim and 60 games >.<

But I can't wait for it all to arrive.

Excellent, a good bunch or are they all FIFA and PES games? (not that those games are bad).

Very decent bunch, I only bought 2 bundles of games which have a few stinkers, the rest I bought individually. First ones I bought were the Devil May Cry games :D

I'll probably post a pic when they all arrive. I definitely need to pick up Dragon Quest 8 too but it's fairly pricey

My most precious game in my PS2 collection and my most wanted sequel
Hey man, I hope you did not pay a lot of money for that cause it is bootleg as bootleg games get.
Which is better? Ape 2 or 3? Any on psn?
Both are awesome, and I actually recommend getting the PAL releases. One reason being the american version removes some of the comedy like the apes drinking alcohol, and bathing "nude" in a hotspring.
Also, will I get banned if I post my 60+ bootleg PS2 collection that I bought as a kid? I also have 30+ original games as well, and am planning to get more.
Again, depends on the members interest if they want to take a look at bootleg covers, as some of them are really bizarre and have shit photoshop.

I don't know if you'd get banned, but I'd like to see them. Most bootlegs I've seen are hilarious.

Once a relative bought me a bootleg copy of Final Fantasy VII PC by mistake. The back of the box proclaims the game contains an "epic story about love and life and heros" and how you can "fight deadly creatures in nail-bitting combats."

I will wait for a confirmation before posting pics. Though, I do believe some good laughs are to be had from the covers.
I used FreeMCBoot + cogswap and later PSXLauncher.elf to play Japan region PS1 games on my NA PS2. It works OK, full compatibility... just annoying to do on a fat PS2 without modding the case or on a slim PS2 without modding the disc lid sensors.

Luckily I now have a fancy white JPN region fat PS2 for those games.
I completely missed this. Could you explain the process a bit better please? I own the latest 9000 slim PS2 chipped, and would like to know how to run this.

It works the same as any swap disc method. You need to fool the slim PS2 lid sensor to think that the lid is closed when it's not to use it.

I have a copy of ParaParaParadise on PS2, but it doesn't play past the initial loading screen. Does it require the controller?

Yes it does. Before you go hunting them down make sure you have a place to play. I had issues with the controller when in a basement with 7' drop ceilings. A room with 10' ceilings was fine.

How many ps2 games all you brahs have? I'm up to 147 myself :) THere are always some great PS2 games to be had.

always wanted to try Rule of Rose but the price is pretty steep

60 at the moment, but it's growing fast. Do you have a nice list of your collection anywhere?

100+, but I am also counting the bootleg games that I have (they work perfectly well).

I think it is time to invest in a new modchip.

249 here. :)

The ones I've bought this year so far are:

Chikyuu Boueigun 2 Simple 2000 Vol.81 (Earth Defense Force)
Monster Attack
Global Defence Force Tactics
Splashdown 2: Rides Gone Wild
Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks
Dynasty Warriors 4

Anyone have a game or games in their collection that they'd never part with under any circumstances whether it is due to value or sentimental reasons? As in, the crown jewel of your PS2 collection?

I'd say mine is REZ. I know it isn't rare and I think that the dreamcast version is the best version, but I just love popping in the disc and shooting around for an hour or so. Feeling the trance through my hands and zoning out!

IMO the PS2 version is better because it's 60 fps and supports the trance vibrator. DC version was 30 fps.

Best version period would be Rez HD though.

My game I wouldn't part with is probably Katamari Damacy, funny enough. I loved it when it came out and it's still probably my favorite PS2 exclusive. That soundtrack is too good as well.
