PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Okay, okay -- Drakengard isn't the best example (although laying the foundation for Nier justifies it enough for me).

I personally don't like the game, but Okami would be an apt replacement.

Its funny because Okami sort of stopped being a PS2 game for me because it's been rereleased so many times. Sometimes I forget it started at ps2.

Kind of how RE4 stopped being a GameCube game due to it's numerous releases as well.

Way of the Samurai series thoughts? Kinda caught my eye from the premise, and the fact that the composer is the same guy who did the really unique Tenchu soundtracks.

Also I think i've asked this before, but any recent impressions on that X-Files survival horror game?
So I picked up xfiles. Factory sealed even. Its so fresh I almost don't want to bust it open and give it a try. Almost.

X-Files Resist or Serve has far exceeded my expectations so far. (Unsurprisingly) the voice acting is top notch. Game benefits by having the original cast and not just your obvious Mulder and Scully but Krychek Skinner etc seem to be all accounted for which is GREAT. Side note: I just played through the Buffy game for Xbox which didn't feature much if any of the original cast (although I think Willow was in it) and I felt this hurt the game.

The game is sort of split ala RE2 with a Mulder campaign and a Scully campaign visiting similar locations. The puzzles are great as well and game be pretty hard (some are extremely easy though). I don't know how much is left to this game but it seems like its a decent length. There is an extras menu as well that seems to have some bonus footage and that of the VA sessions.

Some of the downsides are the character models look a little weird at times, and the graphics are good but not spectacular. Still these few flaws are negligible. Controls are tank-like if that sort of thing bothers you. I happen to love the controls.

Highly recommend this game to fans of the show. In Resist or Serve the story is front and centre as the main draw it really does seem like a lost episode. The gameplay and overall creepyness is a bonus. If you're on the fence about this game and you're a fan of the show its a no brainer. You should buy this game.

Bought Airblade. I remember playing the demo back when it released when I visited the Nike Store in Berlin - they had PS2 stands with this and FIFA IIRC. Now, over 12 years ago I got myself a copy.

Damn, wonder what would a sequel look like. This has its downsides (physics and camera sometimes fail, the story was added in a way that forces you to do all goals at once, which is usually annoying as fuck), but overall is pretty fun.

I was curious about that one. I recently heard it was a Criterion joint. Above anything, it should be technologically competent at least. They pushed the PS2 really far in that department.

Airblade was on the demo disc that I got with my PS2, and like you it took me years before I actually got the full game (I think I got it in 2012 or 2013). The game still holds up pretty damn well visually in my opinion, especially for an earlier, non major title, and the soundtrack is awesome.

You forgot Freedom Fighters. In my opinion, that was one of the best games on PS2 of all time; Story and gameplay, none of them have been recreated with such perfection. They should redo it and turn it an HD remake with improvements to the gameplay.

But yeah, PS1 and SNES are still the king RPG consoles.
I'd say SNES and PS2 are the kings.

PS1 games just don't hold up well. That PS1/N64/Saturn era of graphics is just painful to revisit most of the time. Some sprite-based games fare a bit better.

Hmmm, do console appreciaton threads take tech support-ish inquiries? Because I've got a strange problem with ps2 slim that seems to have no solution online.

I own a Playstation 2 slim (scph-7500 model), and for some reason, the DVD-based games don't "snap in" easily on the spindle; I have to apply some pressure on the three plastic clips so that they lock properly into place and keep the disc stable. However, my CD (blue) games don't have this problem and can be inserted and removed without any trouble. Does anyone know of a permanent fix to this irritant?

Sounds a bit overly simplistic, but have you really gotten up close and personal and examined the mechanism? might be worth taking your PS2 apart and cleaning/investigating the issue. I persnoally haven't heard of that one before, though.

Got both of these today, one in the mail and one as a birthday gift from a friend. I'm looking forward to trying out Ring of Red again, and Flipnic seems like a great game from what I've played. Super clean and stylish, and sprawling tables that do a lot of things that are only possible in a game. Surprised it doesn't get more attention.

Nice ring of red. I don't believe flipnic came out in NA did it? I haven't got into imports and probably won't for quite awhile. Would like to play the 2nd Mr Mosquito game.

Anyway here are my new pickups!

For some reason SCE offloaded Flipnic to Capcom for North America. The PS2 had quite a few first-party games not published by Sony over here.

Flipnic is the very novel and artsy kind of game you see out of Sony from time to time. Not completely polished and not a lot of content, and it's probably impossible to complete all the goals without infinite patience, but it's worth it for all the bizarre ideas and animations.

Make sure to watch the opening video multiple times - you have this retro chiptune jingle that seems to have nothing to do with the game, which is almost a minigame in itself with multiple randomized endings.

And today I got the contraptions necessary to stop using any moving parts in my PS2. No more optical drive, no more IDE hard drive. Thanks to the explanation from this thread on shmups:

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=54015

All of the games that I've tried so far run like a dream off of an SD card. Going on a ripping spree at the moment.

This is amazing! ...and relatively cheap! I'm definitely going to try this out.

Wait, so can you do this without all that free mc boot stuff?

I'm pretty sure that you still have to have FMB or some other way of running OPL/HD Loader/etc.

Yeah, you still need some way to run HD Loader. And if you do decide to try it out, just note that the guide on shmups mentions bending a couple pins on the IDE adaptor to get it all to fit (the ones that connect the IDE adaptor to the molex power). Not too big of a deal, though, and something that could be cleaned up easily a number of ways.

Anyone here keep their PS2 vertical? I've always, always kept my consoles horizontal but I could use a little space. I'm afraid of scratching discs or damaging the tray over time.

I've had my slim PS2 vertically for the last few years and I think it looks awesome that way! Particularly with the circular stand, looks pretty classy. Haven't had any problems at all with it in that position! Make sure you turn the PS logo to match the stance of the system as well!

Just got myself a fat ps2 with the HD choice and the HD advance 2 to play my game collection on the HDD. The choice to play it on the SD card interested me quite a bit.

Do anyone have that link of how they did it as the original link is now delete.

It's still cached:

Better CTRL+S it before it disappears off the cache, too.

Any idea why the thread would be nuked like that? Piracy concerns?

That must be the case. I actually took some screengrabs of the thread's OP on my phone to remember it later, lol. Good thing!

Oh boo. Just after I got my IDE hard drive set up with all my 100+ ripped games, there is an SD option!

Well no matter. I've got 500gb. That's probably still a large number for SD cards for cheap...

Anyone know the total number of individual software titles on PS2? I remember hearing it was around 11,000, which wouldn't surprise me given the 5 or so weekly Japan-exclusive visual novel releases even well into the Wii/360/PS3 gen. Anyone have an official number?

I have no idea where they got the number but in the new thread about the "few things to know about Steam" article, a poster cites the PS3 library of 3,800+. That seems more realistic thank 11k.

There are 2231 games in PAL, so I doubt there is eight thousand different games in other regions.

There are over 11,000 PlayStation 2 games worldwide by Sony's own count.

The thing is that Sony counts each version of the "same" game as a different title.

For example, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X International count as separate titles.

Weird request here, but I figured this was the most apt thread to ask: Does anyone have a 100% save file for Mega Man X Collection? I recently found out that there's a cart racer game on there that I wanted to try out and I've have to complete the first three X games to play it. I found a .cbs file on GameFAQs but that doesn't seem to work in my PS3. Any help would be appreciated.

I actually pulled out the demo for Airblade a while back and I was incredibly impressed by how well it looks visually. I want to say that it looks like an early PS3 game, but that'd be incorrect (because a lot of them aren't very pretty :P) Hoping to add it to my collection soon!

This week I've picked up a bit too many games (Mostly Saturn and Xbox), including a small bunch of PS2 games!

- Smuggler's Run 2
- SSX - (Unfortunately this game doesn't seem to work on backwards compatible PS3's)
- Road Rage 3 (Touge 3)
- Kaido Racer 2 (Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2)

I think I'm going to need to dedicate a second shelf to my PS2 games, because I can't just keep taking certain games out and putting other ones there.

I've never seen one of these for sale before. If this is legit, this is going to go high - sealed UK copy of Rule of Rose. Second class post too!

I just bought the French version like everyone else and thought it was shite so I'll sit this one out personally but that's a few nice items he's selling.

Yeah it's a grey area, I don't even know that you can call it released. The copies that exist were sent to retailers but it was withdrawn only a few days before launch as I remember it so the bulk of them were returned to the distributor.

Hey all, I've a quick question for you. A buddy of mine sent me an American PS2 Slim, it didn't come with a power cable. Is it safe to use a UK PS2 Slim power cable on the US model or would I require a step down converter?
