PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

"The objective was a high-performance, low-price videogame system which also had a design which was easy to write games for."

The concept that killed both the Saturn and the PS3.

I'm looking around for a good signal convertor for the PS2 so I can play it via HDMI. Any suggestions or feedback from those who have tried?
That's a tricky issue. Your best bet for 480i is definitely a Framemeister, I'm afraid. De-interlacing 480i properly and upscaling it is not a trivial process.

That said, you could always try something like this...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VJ9RP6/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I suspect the quality will be somewhat sub-par with 480i sources. It's cheap enough that it's worth a try, I suppose, but expect sub-par visual quality and plenty of input lag.

Thanks! It's good to know I wasn't a million miles away with what I was looking at on Amazon. I checked out the upscaler thread too, but it confused me even more as there was too much information haha

And today I got the contraptions necessary to stop using any moving parts in my PS2. No more optical drive, no more IDE hard drive. Thanks to the explanation from this thread on shmups:

All of the games that I've tried so far run like a dream off of an SD card. Going on a ripping spree at the moment.

Tried it, didn't work. :(

What didn't work about it? The HD won't recognize in HDLoader? In my case I think I initially had the pin alignment incorrect and had to flip things around.

Good idea, I will try that.

Initially I thought it was the SD card, since I used an SDXC. I swapped in an SDHC, but same problem.

Reporting back soon.

I just dug this grave and began buying ps2 games started with Rogue Galaxy then when downhill...bought 6 games Xenosaga, Xenosaga II, Silent hill 2, silent hill 3, Onimuha, Beyond good and evil.

then 2 ps3 games

Anyone ever use those 64 or 128 MB memory cards you see on eBay? Would you trust them? Surely reliable knock offs of such old tech exist now right?

At least you're not buying SNES games. PS2 games are still crazy cheap.

More than likely. Solid state drives rarely get corrupt. Here's some anecdotal advice:

This might not help, but I owned a double memory card. It had twice the space of a regular memory card, third party obviously. When files started going corrupt (save often and to different slots) I transferred all my more advanced saves to an official card and everthing was fine.

I bought a black Nintendo Wii after my white Wii died. The solid state drive in the Wii was bad and old save files would randomly go corrupt. So really, Solid state drives are a crap shoot. If only I'd saved to different slots on that Wii...

I have one of these, a 64 MB one I bought back around 2008 or 2009. It functions, and it keeps data fine over the years, but it seems like the more saves you have on it, the slower the read/write speed. It works decently as long-term storage, but sometimes games will give up trying to read it if it has a lot of saves on it.

I just dug up the ol' PS2 and ordered some games from Amazon, I forgot about the massive dump of licensed games available that I never played so since entry price ranged from $1-$20, I bit.

Here's what I picked up. The theme, bar Silent Hill and Black, was "Good-Great Licensed Games"

Silent Hill 2 & 3 - Two of my favorite games of all time, I lost them in the move to my dorm Freshman year and never saw them again, it's about time I bought them again.

Silent Hill Origins

Silent Hill 4: The Room - I love this game. Don't hate me.

Black - Call of Duty before Call of Duty was the mega-hit it is today, I remember loving this game when I had it.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - Terminator 3: The Redemption is one of my favorite PS2 games and an underrated gem so I figured I'd finally give this a shot too.

Ultimate Spider-Man - I'm a Venom fanboy. Enough said.

Predator: Concrete Jungle

Jaws: Unleashed

Spider-Man: The Movie Video-Game (ugh, remember those fucking titles?)

Batman Begins - The best Batman game around before Arkham was a thing.

Catwoman - Totally for shits and giggles, my friend and I used to play this on GameCube back in the day and make fun of how shitty the film was and I snagged it solely for the nostalgia factor.

Indiana Jones: Staff of Kings

The Simpsons Game

Family Guy The Video Game

Enter The Matrix

Ghost Rider - Complete God of War clone but it's fun so, whatever!

Here's my recent tittles pick ups:
Ace combat 5
onimusha warlords
onimusha 2
onimusha 3 demon siege
mgs 2
mgs 3
devil may cry
zone of the enders
gta vice city
resident evil 4
katamari damaCy
star ocean till the end of time

Thoughts? Suggestions? Any other must haves? Not a big horror fan. Mostly like jrpgs/character action games.

Thinking I might get DQ8... is it worth a pick up? Never played it. I like DQ9 on DS, but I want better graphics

Also picked up another scph 900001 for $50 bucks. Gotta love the internal power brick

You know whats crazy, recently was doing research and the og ps alone sold 102 mil, only a million less than snes, 64, gc, not trying to start any console wars but wow

Any reason why Yakuza 2 is so expensive (NA version)? Its the only one I dont have, and i'd like to play through the series in order...

The late release, low print run special. I remember the review on the 1up show back in the day Shane or Milky or Parish or someone was like "you'd better pick this up now, or you'll be sorry down the road", lmao.

Yakuza 2 has actually lost a bit of value, as it was $80 used a few months back. now you can get it complete for around $50.

That'll change once 5 comes out.

Here are some NG articles on Ken Kutaragi and PlayStation 2 from 1997 upto the technology reveal in Tokyo March 1999.

But Nintendo has tried to keep things the same as they have always been. Nintendo wants Nintendo 64 to succed using the same concepts as they had for 8 bit and 16 bit, even the game characters are the same!

Crazy how what he said applies 20+ years later

Is there a consensus on what the best HD Loader is for PS2? At the moment I am using Open PS2 loader because it is the quickest to populate my gamelist.

AFAIK, that's the most widely used one. Can't speak to "best", but with such things there's usually a lesser known and less user friendly option that's better in some ways.

Collection is still growing. Few days ago Headhunter and The Getaway, too. Don't look at Genma. :)
Unfortunately, Samurai's Destiny has German cover. I wonder if I be able to choose English in the game? Anyone knows?
Besides 3 games in a foil. It was a great deal.

Edit:
Fixed. Just bought SD UK edition.

That all sounds crazy. I got the game for ten bucks from go hastings a few years ago. It's a great Yakuza game, but I can't believe it's going for so much now.

there was an interesting thread on VFDC a few months back and I'd like to share it here. the idea is, VF4EVO on PS2 displays 4:3 480i, but it seems with a bit of finagling you can output 480p 16:9.

here's the thread

The OP is a little unclear on some matters and hasn't been on in a few months, so I'm wondering if anyone can decipher the steps to accomplish this on a NTSC PS2 and a legit copy of VF4EVO. Help appreciated!

Jubei..... juuubbbbeeiiii!!! Anyone looking to do a group play thru of onimusha? I have 1, 2, and 3, but no dawn of dreams...

Played some Nascar 2005: Chase the Cup last night. That games story mode is very reminiscent of NFSU in that you rise from the ranks. You start off in lower teir nascar races and work your way up to the big leagues. It's really fun and I'm not a fan of actually watching Nascar. I do want to get 2006 though as I heard it has a 2 player season mode which seems super fun.

HEY! You PS2 owners looking for component cables... quit looking and get this instead. They are official.

D terminal is the same as component. If you got a Framemeister, it plugs directly in. If you don't have an FM you can simply reterminate the cable with component plugs or use some sort of adapter.
