PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Hi guys, just getting into collecting for the PS2. It's the only console from the sixth generation I largely missed out on; as a young kid I was lucky enough to have both the original Xbox and Gamecube on their launch, so counted my blessings. Still, there were a few PS2 exclusives I always wanted to have a go of, and now I think I'm ready to.

I'm looking for the more Japan-centric exclusives/JRPGs/other obscure titles you can't experience elsewhere. Any other recommendations to add beyond what I've got down so far:

Monster Rancher
Nightshade
Haunting Grounds
King’s Field IV
Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil
Shadow of Rome
Shadow Hearts trilogy
Radiata Stories
Ring of Red
Shadow Tower Abyss
Suikoden III and V
Tenchu
The Bouncer
Tenchu
Valkyrie Profile 2
Xenosaga trilogy

Shadow of Destiny/Memories is an obscure and interesting Japanese developed title.

BTW, *leans in closer* I jost so 'appen ta be sellin' a copy of Klonoa 2 among other PS2 Japanese-centric games...

When I think of Japan centric games I think of stuff like Katamari Damacy, Gitaroo man, and Ribbit King (also on GC). Wow trying to spell these with my phone trying to auto correct them is frustrating...

Auto correct... Every time I type in something like "Pikmin" and end up with "pizza cat"...

If autocorrect where a person:

A co-worker gave me a PS2 today that has been sitting in his closet for awhile. It is a little dusty, but when I plugged it in, it ran quiet and the tray opened when I pressed the button. Can't try the A/V right now, but for later when I do test it out fully, anything to be on the lookout when getting a PS2? Like, any particular things that may indicate it may on its last legs or whatever.

Thanks!

If the system can't play regular cds (they're blue), that usually indicates the laser is dying.

Lasers don't really "die," some outstanding exceptions aside... lasers usually just get dirty, or their rated voltage necessity isn't being supplied within spec, or both.

Most PS2 laser issues are fixable with maintenance. Far from "dead."

So did some testing with this PS2.

It ran Smackdown vs Raw: Here Comes the Pain no problem. Played a match.

However, I have tried 3 music CDs and on all of them I get a disc read error.

I might clean the PS2. I saw a video from Adam Koralik that is pretty in depth on cleaning a PS2, so I might give that a try.

Yeah, that's actually one of his better videos. I wouldn't go to him for AV advice, but that's an informative video.

This happened to a lot of PS2s even within release window.

Cleaning may help... or it may not. I remember cleaning a PS2's laser lens back in frickin 2002 and it did nothing. It's probably voltage.

But cleaning a second one in 2004 worked so well that it still works to this day. That was probably just from when I saw a friend blow a doobie through the PS2's ventilation ports.. xD

I do watch all of his videos, and I like his pickup videos - but some of his opinions I do not agree with.

Thanks! I did look up the model number, and it was an early release model. I believe a version 2 model.

Update on my PS2 that wasn't reading discs. Turned it vertical and it works fine - now reading all disc types. So is that an indication of a problem with the motor? Anything that can be done about that? Simple cleaning?

My knee jerk reaction there would be a laser alignment issue. Pretty common with the PS2, and could potentially be temporarily solved by physically moving the system like you did.

Reminds me of the days turning my PS1 upside down in order to play games.

Are there any options available to use a PS4 controller for example on the PS2? With the USB port in the front, maybe there is potential there?

I finally picked up Robot Alchemic Drive for a good price. Been wanting to play this for years but always miss out on eBay or it drifts from my mind as I buy other things.

A big fuck you to whoever made Shinobi have forced inverted controls on both the X and Y axis with no option to correct this horrible mistake.

Nightshade too.

throw FFXII under that bus too. i've been playing and the inverted cameras that can't be changed in the option menu is annoying.

My official PS2 component cable died so I had to order a new one...monster kind.

i just grabbed a 5 dollar one.

Monster/psyclone may have been more marketing fluff with analog cables but at least they turned out to be good alternatives when official cables became scarce since they were made with enough decent standards as official ones.

Anyway, another great alternative is importing D-terminal cables from Japan.

My PS3 monster component cables came in...so far so good, it's gold plated and worked perfectly with my slim. I took some screens of 480p supported games.

I can finally play PS1 games again with these as well. For 20 bucks new this is pretty sweet.

wow, where did you get monster cables for 20 bucks, that's a good price!

OMFG...I finally got Urban Reign to be in 480p for the 1st time ever. I've been trying to find out how to get it in that res since they say it's in the game menu, but the truth is that it's not there, so I had to hold both triangle and cross to access it when the PS2 logo shows up. I don't get this whole hold 2 buttons to access a res that you have to set it each time you boot a game, but oh well, at least I figured it out, anyways a screenshot.

It doesn't help, either that no one can seem to agree on what fucking button combination it is. I've heard: Just triangle, trangle + square, triangle + cross

Just played 007 quantum of solace and it's neat. I knew eurocom did it, but had no idea it scored higher reviews than the Treyarch version.

Fun and only like 3 hours too.
