PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

progress log:

been playing some more R-Type Final and made it to stage 4... ships are starting to unlock but since i'm way in the beginning, it's going to be a while.

Now that i'm playing Front Mission 5, i reordered Front Mission 4 off amazon warehouse for 5 bucks shipped. hopefully it's in decent condition as all the gamestops around me no longer carry ps2 games so it's hard to find these formerly budget games.

So lately, I've really wanted to get back into PS2 gaming. That's not an option with my PS3 Slim, so I got a PS2 yesterday that's in great shape.

I've been wanting to play vanilla arcade Tekken 3, not the PS1 port, so I have a copy of Tekken 5 on the way this week, which of course includes that nice Arcade History mode.
Next I'm going to hunt down copies of Ace Combat 4, 5 and Zero as well as R-Type Final.

great pickup esp with the network adapter slap a ide hard drive in there and set up freemcboot

Finally got a PS2 over here in Japan. Plus, I found the title I've been wanting to own for many, many years.

I...I need to see gameplay of this game based soley on the cover art.

Yeah, wow I hadn't even thought of that. Thx!

It's not as easy as plugging in a hdd and enjoying your games but its totally worth it. You will probably need an IDE to SATA adapter and you will probably have to take the Network Adapter apart so the board can drop down to fit it. I used an adapter with a 2.5" "laptop drive"

One thing I noticed is the hard drive gets extremely hot. There is no cooling for it as they never intended to have a drive in there recieving constant access. I put a vent hole in the bottom of my ps2 and put some mesh for computer modding over it and then I sit my ps2 on a laptop cooler which runs off one of the front usb ports. The drive runs nice and cool now.

I have seen this character in a few memetic/homage Japanese videos (the first that comes to mind being this one). All I can find with a search based on your picture is that the game is called Kuma Uta, is a rhythm game, and not particularly common on ebay (five or six copies). No idea if it's any good though but I imagine you'd be the right person to ask about that.

It's been over a decade since I've last played Virtua Fighter 4, but I finally decided to get a copy of Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (since they're really cheap nowadays) and it should be here Tuesday

that's awesome! yeah grab r-type final, it's thankfully still cheap... gradius V on the other hand.... =|

Here's some recent picks I got:

I'll start with the bottom row. Do you know Cing? The guys behind Hotel Dusk and Last Window? Their actual first game was a detective adventure game that mostly played as an interactive movie, and its localized version was only released in Europe under the name Glass Rose. A good pick since it's an interesting game and it's becoming rare to find.

Assault Suits Valken is not a particularly good pick, however. It's a remake from a SNES cult classic we know better as Cybernator. Very awesome game. Problem here is that these fellows at Psikyo screwed majorly by remaking the controls, which in turn screwed up the whole balance of the game. A shame, because Cybernator is really expensive and a good budget priced remake on the PS2 would have been much welcomed.

There isn't much to be said about Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance because it's not that obscure of a game. It's Snowblind's first action RPG before they made Champions of Norrath which followed a similar formula.

Now though we enter the domain of the horror genre, first with Project Zero 3, which our friends from the other side of the pond will know better as Fatal Frame 3. It's the final send up to the first two games' stories, though some will not like how that trilogy concluded. It's starting to become rare to find and thus leading to price hikes. Should have grabbed it a couple of years ago at the very least, but oh well.

Secondly in the horror genre, we see Kuon, From Software's attempt at making an horror game. Surprisingly good, but it's also becoming pretty rare to the point months ago I couldn't find a copy under 90€. So I spent a week searching everywhere, and suddenly found a seller in France who had it for 17€ but didn't ship internationally, which led me to find just anyone within the country who could receive the game and basically smuggle it outside of France in a very nerve wrecking experience. Good times.

Speaking of France, that on the top left is a French promo copy of Shinobido, a ninja game that is very similar to the old Tenchu games on the PS1. Sadly, it has much of the clunk of its predecessors as well, whereas the Tenchu series actually improved the experience in its PS2 offerings.

I hope you guys enjoyed my many words about some PS2 titles that aren't particularly known.

Aw man, I loooove Shinobido Imashime. It's definitely clunky, but the flexible mission structure is so fun.

Here it is!!! My no death run of Art of Fighting 2.

This took a while to do!

This is crazy impressive!

I actually really liked your writeups, didnt know about Kuon and Glass Rose!

nice grabs! i learned a lot from your post.

i've been on a tear recently w retro games:

3 came in the mail today:
since megaman amiibo bundle is coming out with renewed interest
i picked these up sealed for 11 buck each shipped and FM4 for 5 bucks shipped used from amazon warehouse. pretty clean shape, i tried to take off the used sticker in the back but failed. i'll get it out another time =)

nice! i just watched the whole thing while snacking =)

that fight w/ john was close and the second round of Geese was down to the wire =D
I tried to trick John but it seems it didn't work as well when you fight him later on vs fighting him earlier, where he's much easier to fight. As for Geese, I'm glad I did that strength bonus game, or else I would had died!!! And yes, that was one of the most tense things that happened this year, lol.

This is crazy impressive!
Thanks!

You essentially upload ryona to youtube. Thats awesome lol some of your vids have quite a few views.
They're actually death montages(not that other word) which are different as they have rules that differ depending on how it's done. They are very strict rules as I only pick games that qualify for it plus any gender or non-human characters can qualify, though I'm getting tired of doing these so I'll focus on other game/movie/tv related content to keep the channel going, like playthroughs, let's plays, longplays, and movie and tv topics.

I see. I just perused through them casually and looked at the thumbnails.
I sneak in other characters in them too that appear in the videos, lol. But if I'm gonna be honest, I am tired of doing death montages, and will quit doing them so much(as there will be a huge break for months until the summer) because they are time consuming and get in my way of my other types of vids, which is bad for me because I promised variety and I'm lacking it, though I'm changing that in March.

I have 50+ games to do playthroughs/let's plays/longplays to do this year so I need to work on that.

Gonna start Contra: Shattered Soldier tonight. I've been playing a lot of Contra lately (mostly Contra 3 and Hard Corps), and now that I feel fairly satisfied with those, I'm going to jump over to SS - been meaning to play it for years and recently got a copy as a late Christmas present. I'm pretty excited.

I really liked Contra SS. I remember it being divisive back in the day though. It's still totally a Nakazato joint through and through imo. If you liked 3 and HC, you should like it.

oh and one of the RKA booses makes a cameo lol

I skipped out on copies of both PS2 Contras. The main thing I remember hearing from reviews at the time is that Shattered Soldier required total precision, or else very bad things happen.

Couldn't really deal with that.

This and being on my last health point in the last section of the last level of Shatterhand were some of the craziest stuff that happened this month, lol. I just don't know how I get so lucky.

i played alot of art of fighting, that's pretty skillful to figure out those patterns. Mr. Big must've killed me a dozen times before finally winning a match.

well, i'm going to play my genesis tonight and give ps2 a bit of a break. maybe continue unlocking some r-type ships tomorrow night =)

How many ships have you gotten in that game?

It's weird that Genesis didn't get a R-Type game but the Master System did.

not too far, just under 20 ships right now since i started over. i'm not looking at a guide but eventually will once it gets to a point where ships stop unlocking regularly. i loved master system r-type, was only version i beat for the original.

Get ready for the best home port of any fighting game ever made.

Get ready for one of the hardest and frustrating Final Boss EVER, i can't remember how many time i was about throw my controller on the wall, I'm usually a really calm person when come to challenge... but this one is insane. The worst is when i see a video that he 2 shot him like butter on hardest difficulty.... grrr

Great game btw, the sequel was a little less fun for me...

No lies detected. Took about 4 hours total, though when i finally got him, it was a 1 hit tate lol

I was dashing wrong most of the time. Dashing+jumping as if i was playing ninja gaiden black and a shinobi expert corrected me on it. Nailed it pretty soon after that.

Really awesome game, very underrated. It's like a really long and awesome naomi arcade game.

I've seen quite a few, i'm surprised you're having a hard time finding one, assuming you're actively looking?

No specifically for it, but in general when looking for a variety of older stuff. Every fat PS2 I have found at a second hand shop or yard sale is too beat up, but I haven't tried ebay yet. Also haven't looked though all the systems at a local retro game store because their prices are a bit high.

Definitive PS2 is:

s-l1000.jpg

Almost got one of these instead of my DTL unit.
I own that model - along with another black PAL console - and it's the one I use to play all my Japanese PS2 and PS1 games. It does surely look good, but I'd swap it any day, for one of those matte red or yellow limited editions. :P

Speaking of Japanese hardware... Do you guys know if there are cheaper - but nice quality - alternatives to the mad-expensive PS2 Saturn controller? I'm looking for a 6 buttons joypad, as I'm not really an arcade stick kind of player. Any suggestion?

DOWNHILL DOMINATION!!!! I still play this game with my brother to this day. Anyone else have fond memories of speeding down those hills on the back of a llama?

Oh yeah. That game is tons of fun. I love pegging other racers in the back of the head with water bottles.

Just beat it! Finished it with an A rank - game rules. Definitely one of the best Contra games, but I might like 3 and Hard Corps a little bit more.

Never played it, but I feel like I should, now.
It doesn't really belong to the same genre, but one 'extreme sports' kinda game that I still love for the PS2 is Aggressive Inline. Its pace and smoothness, along with the sheer amount of gameplay possibilities to be explored in each stage, made me place it above Tony Hawk's titles, in the end.
