PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Nothing game related has amazed me as much as when I saw gameplay footage of MGS2 for the first time, before or since. I will never forget.

Using a CGA/EGA/YUV to VGA converter, I've hooked my PS2 to my NEC 71V. That's a lot of acronyms.

What converter do you have? I wanna buy dat monitor since its not pricey at all.

After playing around with this yesterday, here's what i noticed:
- all resolutions have white spots, at first. after a few minutes on 640x480 and 800x600, white spots are gone entirely.
That is weird!!!

What's your console region ? PAL or NTSC ?

I read quickly on another forum is possible it was the power of the console, gave too much power to the video output.
That is also weird.

Link isn't working.

Apologies if this has already been posted somewhere here.

Ewan of http://microbeetechnology.com.au/ has come up with a fix for the white spots on the GBS boards.

His explanation:

"The SDRAM interface from the TV5725 scaler chip on the board has no damping resistors in the clock & control lines
and fails to calibrate the timing of the interface properly as a result. It is marginal and causes bad screen refresh data.
As such it took some time to track this down as the cause.

There is a track to be cut and the resistor (SMD 0603 size, or 1608 metric) gets fitted across the cut. Then the capacitor is soldered to the ground end
of a nearby bypass cap & the free end linked to the SDRAM side of the resistor that was fitted across the track cut. It is not very elegant, but it works & cures the video noise totally."

Some pics of the mod:

Have done the mod to my GBS board, and the difference is noticeable.

Hope this helps,

I'm interested in playing the Tekken games. Which of the 3 PS2 installment is the funnest one (not necessarily that's the most balanced/"most content", etc. Something that's fun for a total 3D fighter scrub to paly around with)?

They all look neat in different ways. Though I suppose Tekken 5 has the unlockable port of Starblade...

Tekken Tag because it has the best music, the best roster and the tag combos are fun.

Get Tekken 5 DR on PS3
and Tekken Tag on PS2

This is random, but: if anyone wants to play the PS2 version of RE4, I highly recommend keeping Widescreen mode OFF. Progressive scan works well but Widescreen seemingly made the game run worse on my end and it looks uglier.

i think there are some homebrew boxes for using a ps3 controller, but it's been a while since i followed such projects, and I don't think anyone sells them. Might be worth looking in to, regardless, if you're like me and dislike using non-dualshock controllers for playstation games

Playing Enthusia for the first time. Has nice graphics. Too bad there's no 480p or 16:9 though. Finding it easier to jump into, than getting back into GT4.

Am I crazy or does the Guncon 2 not work with a PVM? (It's a CRT right?)

I have my PVM hooked up to my PS2 via Scart-BNC if that matters. I just can't get it to work ...

yeah, i have a BVM CRT. i just asked in the new retro thread and sixteen-bit shared how to get it to work.

Started playing Suikoden 5, it's been a slow burn so far but I'm liking it. It's the one game in the series that feels most like a Trails game, with large towns and lots of mini events in them.

shame it's the last one, but it's easily the best since 2, i thought. enjoy it man.

Loved Suikoden 5 more than 2 personally. It's definitely slow in the beginning, but when it picks up you'll be completely invested. I went from considering stopping to unable to put it down.

koopas just to update you i got my guncon working on the sony BVM, it needed a separate piece to work over component to BNC that's displayed on the back of the time crisis box. but from what i'm told, it's works with scart cables as well.

Thanks, and I happened to already have the component handy (SCPH-1160) so it was a breeze to set up

Rocking some Vampire Night now :)

Where was this place where you could buy Onimusha 4 for under 10$? Good pickups!

yeah, i was shocked so a grabbed it with 2 other similar priced games to get one free.

it's a retro store in New Jersey called Digital Press. they are probably the best store in the area and they don't try to rip you off.

been playing some Liberty City Stories PS2 tonight and damn the soundtrack is pretty good.

the great benefit over the psp is the pressure sensitive buttons for X, Square, buttons that are used nicely for analogue acceleration and brake. something the psp didn't have.

i threw on GTA III and wow! it looks pretty good on a Sony BVM. still pretty fun to play too =)
