PS2 Problems

I'm trying to play some of my old FF games on my PS2 and it won't let me load even the first disc of VIII, nor will it load anything off the 2nd disc of IX (well, it loads a convo that starts off a disk, and after that it wont do shit... just goes to black, plays the music, then nothing). Its not the disks, cuz I took them to get refurbished and the guy was saying they're some of the cleanest discs he's seen. You guys think its the PS2?

I remember hearing something about some of the PS2s having this same problem. I got this one about 24 months ago or so. Unfortunately I'm completely ignorant when it comes to which versions of the system are the better ones, etc. I'll list the shit it gives me in the version info:
console: SCPH-39001
Browser: 1.20
CD Player: 1.20
PS Driver: 1.10
DVD Player: 2.12U

any ideas? I'm wondering if its something I can get repaired or if I should just quit being a pussy and go grab one of the new ones.

Ding Ding Ding!

However, don't expect them to fix it for free if you have done something that would be considered the same as voiding your warenty *wink*

Yeah, I figured I'd have to call them up. I just didn't know if anyone else had the same problems. It'd be a helluva lot easier if someone had the same problems and had already gone through the steps rather than calling, going from prompt to prompt, screwing up, hanging up, trying again, wash, rinse, repeat. Ah well....
