You need to upgrade to the latest Home. If the update fails halfway, retry when the HDD light stop blinking. Alternatively, delete the existing copy and redownload.

The contents and capabilities have improved significantly. The art direction hasn't. They should really stop everything they are doing now and update the human expression. It would change a lot of impressions from the get go.

Sony plans to redesign free PlayStation 3 virtual world Home.

It will be repositioned as a hub for social games, according to VentureBeat.

"This is a giant leap in the evolution of the platform," Home director Jack Buser said.

"We are going to 'up level' games as the heart of PlayStation Home. This means that Home itself is going to become a game. The first things you see when you get into Home are games."

Home, which launched in 2008, has more than 23 million registered users. This new design focuses on a core group of hardcore gamers who love games, Sony said.

Games will, Buser hopes, keep users engaged for longer - and off of their iPhones, Twitter and Facebook.

These include large-scale group games. The central plaza will be replaced by a futuristic transit called The Hub, which integrates games, quests, events and user-generated content. It's designed to be its own meta game. You'll earn points, too.

Thankfully, Sony plans to update the Home client to create a more streamlined experience upon login.

The new Home goes live this autumn.
 
This autumn probably means next summer based on their track record. That being said it sounds like the right direction. I have never got into Home, but every now and then when this gets bumped I remember and try to take advantage of it.

I already like it how it is but sounds like a change for the better. So long as it isn't soully based around games and you can still go for a walk around spaces and take some photos, i'll be happy.

Hopefully it brings more traffic to some of the great games that reside in Home :D

If anything, they just need to breathe more life into the avatars and the world in general.

The real problem underlying home is that everything feels very lifeless or sterile. People walk around like robots and interact like robots.

A few more animations here and there or context sensitive animations would make all the difference in the world.

Some extra sound effects wouldn't hurt either. As well as speeding up models load. What's the point of customizing your avatar if all others see is a ghost or a very low LOD model?
 
Looking forward to see what they do with the new Home. Haven't used it that much honestly (max 10 times), but I've always felt it has potential.
 
As much as I REALLY would like them to change the art style too, I'm guessing it would be impossible to implement because of all the Home DLC. It would be seriously be awesome if Sony can get one of their Japanese studio's to redo the avatar art, IMO it would get me to go to Home a little more often. Anyways, I really want to see the MMO aspect in action, and everything else (the "Hub" and the 4 districts) sounds pretty neat too.

Yes. 4 out of 5 times, I'll log into Home before or after playing a game/movie.

I saw hardcore gamers (level 15 and above) on my friends list trying to collect items in Home too.

I have bought 2 Home games myself: Sodium and Scribble Shooters. They are actually fun games. Also own a transformer robot costumes. It will transform into a jet when you walk, and then back into a droid when you stop. Also has its own special action, but too bad I can't melee with it.

The Japanese Home is much more interesting since they have virtual concerts there. e.g., Project Miku, Macross.

It has its highs and lows, but overall pretty interesting environment albeit stunted by bad art (lifeless default avatars), and simplistic loading.

Would have helped if they allow us to contribute persistent user generated content (e.g., forums, voice messages, or even user generated items and worlds).

Also would be even better if they come up with a quick abstract (i.e., non-physical/virtual-world) UI to the Home services. And then let us go into the 3D world for more value added services like trophy showcases/show-offs.

Best if they open it up for other platforms like iOS to hop in. And let users add/transform their websites and web blogs into a connected and ever-expanding PS Home world.

EDIT: The interesting things about Home games is you can still see other Home avatars and their speech bubbles in the game (if the developers allow you to). ^_^
 
The zombie killing concept is great. The actual implementation is good but have room for improvements. Hopefully the new Home client (v1.55 ?) can fix it. It would be superb if the controls is even more responsive and I can execute more moves (e.g., dodge, jump).

Even better if the camera control can be more like a TPS.

See the Central Plaza doesn't have all the existing buildings in the background, can we have a larger play area ?

So 1.55 update was just released today. Haven't properly looked at the changes yet since all I did was install the update but I'll check it out later today. It did seem to run better from that short time though.

Home has come along in leaps and bounds since its inception and this is another milestone in speed and ease of use. You can jump into Home super fast now and relocating to other spaces is also pretty rapid. Framerate problems and screen-tearing seem to be nonexistent also which I assume is to do with the maturation of the technology they're using. The wardrobe is a darn sight quicker too which is a massive relief, even in mostly empty categories it would stall and stutter on loading, all that jankiness is gone. Unfortunately browsing through stores is still a shitty, poorly implemented crap-fest of an experience.

The service has its haters for sure and there are people who will just never enjoy Home but it's such an ever-evolving and adapting thing it's silly to just write it off completely. I've found running around all the themed spaces quite entertaining and there's usually plenty to do - Sodium 2 is great fun and a brilliant stepping stone toward actual full-on games in Home. I think the new hubs idea and shifting of gears to make Home a game-oriented platform is genius and I look forward to seeing what they come up with. Particularly Lockwood who seem to be Homes AAA dev right now.

There is so much potential in this service and it's only just starting to bare fruit, I get genuinely excited when I think about the ways Home could develop in the future. I hope that later versions of the XMB or PS4 will have deeper Home connections, there is vast potential here for really deep, rich content and experiences.
 
I bet its to test the new hub structure and that fps game. Sounds very interesting and should be a marked improvement.

I am a plus subscriber, I wonder if I have an invite waiting at home.
 
Meh. Its just a reorganization. Its more spaces that are pretty much the same size. And quests that ave you running back and forth between spaces, so loading after loading.

Not impressed with the update so far.

Home Technology & Future Plans

Lua for Script => Phyre engine as of 3.0 supports Lua for high level scripting. Home Client 1.5 and later may be using Phyre and 1.55 and later the Havoc Physics engine.
Game Engine = Havok Physics tools (middleware) plus Phyre game engine? Phyre is an upper level developer-terrain and lighting engine but requires middleware like Havoc for physics and behavior.
Developed using Maya

Home is similar to Second life but Second life is slightly ahead in development. Both started out using Lua and now Second life is using Mono for scripting. Second life started using Havoc middleware for physics simulations and now Home is doing the same. If PS Suite is based on a Mono VM then I expect Home to convert to Mono (same as second life) and some version ported to multiple PS Suite platforms. PS Suite MUST provide native language: a game engine plus select Havoc Physics middleware native language engines and in addition to a Mono VM, Gnome Libraries for applications and a DRM (Sony purchased the rights to Playready from Microsoft). IF Home uses the same native language game engines in PS Suite then Home is also a cross platform PS Suite Game.

PS Suite game = Mono Script plus collada game assets file that plugs into native language openGL game engines. Games can in addition through the Mono VM call Gnome application libraries below.

PS Suite Application = Mono script that calls Gnome native language APIs (Gstreamer, glib, Pango, webkit) with Mono using CairoGL for rendering.
Performance benchmark tests show that Mono is up to 220 times faster than LSL2. The benchmarks were math-intensive scripts typically used to evaluate performance. For ordinary scripts, the performance gains are much more humble.
Mono uses more memory than the typical LSL bytecode. It offsets this by introducing dynamic memory allocation. LSL2 allocates a full 16KB for all scripts, even simple "Hello, Avatar" ones. Mono allocates only the memory it needs. In tests on typical regions it turns out that the combination of Mono using more memory, but allocating memory better, is about a wash as far as overall memory footprint goes.
In some extreme cases Mono scripts can use up to four times the memory as LSL2 scripts. To maintain backwards compatibility, the script size limit has been increased from 16KB to 64KB.
Mono tip: Mono can do bytecode sharing. Thus multiple copies of scripts with the same asset id will only take up as much room as one instance. Imagine some script that you use a dozen times on your land. If each of the objects containing the script is separately compiled from text source, you will use up a dozen times the script's size of memory. But if instead you simply drag a copy of the single, already compiled script into each of the dozen objects, then no matter how many copies exist they only take up the size of one script (plus data) in memory.

"Uncharted 3" Which explains how we can have Uncharted on Home.

Edit: Havok typically provides Physics tools that can be used by other engines. So the above article mentioning that the Havoc engine is being used by Home after 1.5 may only be partially correct. It could be Havoc + Phyre or some other engine.
 
Tried the Uncharted game in Home and its pretty good, Better than the last ones.
Also it says there are 10 free items hidden in a store. Anyone knows which store it is?
 
I was wanting to check this out after work. I assumed there would be impressions on gaf, or at least some nice GIFs of everyone chasing a girl around in HOME>

The Godfather space allowed a bunch of people to play, with no chat. It failed when EA Sports showed up.

EA Sport's winners rewards were also annoying to get because people would lagswitch to force people to jump out in frustation and sit there for HOURS literally HOURS with one other person that refused to leave and let them get the reward.

I'm all for Poker coming back, because that was about all I used Home for, but let's get real: Unless they've fixed the queues (like your complaining about) the hacks (major reason for some of the queues) and give rewards without having to buy-in and get hacked games, there's no reason for me to bother with it.

FPS games and hell the Uncharted event have always been ass on Home. They don't have sensitivity options so it's "adjust or die trying."

The Uncharted game was a neat idea, but with the shitty aim speed and not practical "Uncharted 1:1" gameplay, it was terrible to play.

Also I still say they really need to give out free apartments and apartment items and pants and shoes. There is very little of that and it's more drowning in T-shirts. No reason to go to the personal spaces either.

They really need to throw free users a bone now and then while also revamping the whole system.

If it's still up (probably late because they're going to update the store tonight/later today): Threads->A-Z->Male->Free items.

Also I guess I'll check the update out tomorrow but I still expect to be disappointed with the potential that Home had in the pre-release hype stuff. I still want a trophy room. I still want Avatars that aren't ghosts on loading into a new space. I want a "seamless" transition from going out of my apartment into a hallway/server "hall" that holds my personal apartment and chat with others that are in that server rack. Leave that area and exit the "building" and am in a massive online space that isn't "instants"/player limited.

And for fucks sake I want all the games in Home to be queue/non-queue'd to the point where EVERYONE can play them. The Siren space is pure murder because you can never get into the game because EVERYONE is trying to get into it. Why have they not updated that space yet?

There was a thread that used to be in the community forum I believe where people listed their names on XBL, PSN, Steam, etc. I think it was removed when the community section became public.
 
Lol at some of these impressions. You guys going into this service and expect COD in your face experiences.

I actually found the U3 minigame kinda neat for Home. I'm 99% sure it was made to play out like that. It's sort of a shooting gallery but with your avatar. The typical non gamer will get a kick out of it and may get interested into the real thing. I've played the actual Retail game and I felt it was nice and cool to use your avatar and be a part if you may of the semi-experience.

Again, the FPS game is neat too since it uses your avatar. Those casual gamers will love this shit, specially since they don't pay a dime. I could go and play that free battlefield game and wouldn't bitch about it. It's free and I get to waste some time while playing with friends. If I want the real thing, I'll buy BF3/BC.

I guess it's understandable to make comparisons since they are trying to imitate the real game experiences and do deserve criticism as it's the only way they will keep improving the minigames they implement for future games. I sure hope Home gets a Vita version. That would be cool.
